Student Concept Mastery and Scientific Literacy Profile on Redox Concepts in Senior High Schools in North Gorontalo
This study analyzed the profiles of students’ concept mastery and scientific literacy on the topic of reduction-oxidation (redox) reactions in three senior high schools in North Gorontalo, Indonesia. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, involving written tests and interviews with 12th-grade students at SMAN 1, SMAN 3, and SMAN 6 North Gorontalo. The test instruments were designed based on the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy cognitive levels (C1–C6) and Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) scientific literacy dimensions (context, content, competence, attitude). Results indicate that students have moderate overall concept mastery, with highest performance on lower-order cognitive skills remembering (C1) and understanding (C2) but substantially lower performance on higher-order skills such as applying (C3), analyzing (C4), evaluating (C5), and creating (C6). In terms of scientific literacy, students performed best in the content knowledge dimension, while showing weaknesses in scientific attitudes. Specifically, around 59% of students could recall basic facts (C1), but only ~35% could tackle creation-based tasks (C6). Likewise, over 54% demonstrated understanding of scientific content, yet less than 47% exhibited strong scientific competencies or attitudes. These findings suggest that current teaching practices heavily emphasize rote learning of content, leading to decent factual knowledge but insufficient higher-order thinking and lack of engagement with science in real-life contexts. The study highlights the need for instructional innovations such as inquiry-based, problem-based, and context-oriented learning to strengthen students’ conceptual understanding at all cognitive levels and to foster scientific skills and attitudes
Genetic Diversity of Agronomic Traits in Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Using Several Colchicine Concentrations
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of various colchicine concentrations on the genetic diversity of agronomic traits in rice (Oryza sativa L.). The experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Modernization Application Center (BRMP) Gorontalo from January to April 2025, employing a two-factor factorial completely randomized design (CRD). The first factor was rice variety, comprising two levels: V1 (Inpago 13 Fortis) and V2 (Inpari Nutri Zinc), while the second factor was colchicine concentration with four levels: P0(control/0 ppm), P1 (750 ppm), P2(1000 ppm), and P3 (1250 ppm). Each treatment combination was replicated three times, resulting in 24 experimental units. Observed parameters included both vegetative and generative phases. Results indicated that colchicine did not exert a significant overall effect on either vegetative or generative traits; however, certain concentrations induced an increase in the number of spikelets in the Inpago 13 Fortis variety. In contrast, Inpari Nutri Zinc exhibited higher tolerance to colchicine, maintaining stable growth and morphology across all concentrations. These findings highlight that colchicine effectiveness is highly dependent on dosage and genotype response, emphasizing the need for optimal concentrations to induce mutations without causing toxic effects, thereby providing a foundation for rice mutation breeding
Total Mobilization as a Total Defense Strategy Against Pandemics within the National Health System
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed significant vulnerabilities in Indonesia’s national health system, which was largely sectoral and insufficiently prepared for multidimensional crises. This study explores the implementation of total mobilization as a strategy of total war in managing the pandemic. Using a descriptive qualitative method through document analysis and comparative study, it examines cross-sectoral integration involving military deployment under Military Operations Other Than War (MOOTW), transformation of domestic health-related industries, and civil society engagement through ad-hoc institutions such as the COVID-19 Handling and National Economic Recovery Committee (KPCPEN). Findings indicate that total mobilization enabled a more effective crisis response through centralized coordination, logistical acceleration, and institutional synergy. Comparative insights from South Korea and Israel emphasize the importance of systemic preparedness, data-driven decision-making, and strong public trust. However, challenges include civic resistance, regional disparities, and the risk of human rights infringements. This study concludes by recommending a redesign of Indonesia’s national health resilience framework and the establishment of a permanent National Health Resilience Command to ensure long-term crisis readiness
