KAP towards COVID-19: A Case Study of Undergraduate Students in Malaysia

Higher educational centres with significant numbers of young people will become acute disease hubs during a pandemic. Owing to the sizeable population of young adults, more direct social interaction, and unrestricted boundaries, universities have the capacity to become volatile, centrifugal outbreak hubs. This research examines the university student’s knowledge, attitude, and practice towards the COVID-19 pandemic in Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), Nilai. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to obtain the data and analysed utilising SPSS software with a sample size of 2061 USIM students. Descriptive statistics, Likert scale analysis, multiple linear regression, as well as Pearson correlation, were used to identify the relationship between KAP. It was discovered that most of the USIM’s students have an excellent knowledge (85%) and attitude (73.8%) towards COVID-19. However, they moderately practice the right steps to prevent themselves from virus infection. This is very likely due to unpreparedness in responding to a critical situation such as this pandemic. In other words, it can be said that although students have a pretty good knowledge on the matter, still, attitude and practice have much room for improvement. The study finds significant relationship between practice and both knowledge and attitude

The Practices of Takaful al-Ijtimai’ during COVID-19: Malaysia’s Setting

Every aspect of human life is inherently risky. The fatal infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), known as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has been considered a black swan event and compared to the economic scene of World War Two. The concept and practices of takaful al-ijtimai’ or social security are pertinent area to be discussed amidst the COVID-19 pandemic recovery mission because its meaning and applications are much wider; encompasses both financial and non-financial assistance and is not limited by the country\u27s regulations. Using secondary data, this study will examine the concept and scopes of takaful al-ijtimai’, from an Islamic perspective, as well as provide the current state of the art in its application during the COVID-19 epidemic in Malaysia. The study is intended to contribute to an understanding and promotion of the concept of takaful al-ijtimai’ as an important tool for achieving maqasid shariah and sustainable development goals

The purpose of this study is to review the Islamic microfinance model that best suited the bottom of the wealth pyramid (B20) communities in Malaysia. Islamic microfinance products and services that are friendly to the B20 communities are crucial to ensure they are not lacking behind from the current development where everybody has access to the financial services. Most current Islamic microfinance products use debt-based financing that similar to the banking products. These products are not suitable to the B20 communities because it creates debt and burdens them to pay back the financing. Therefore, this paper reviews the potential of equity-based financing models that suit to the B20 communities. The study reviews past literature obtained from scholarly databases including Web of Sciences, Scopus, and Google Scholar. In addition, data from microfinance providers are also collected through their website, news published, and bulletin.  The findings reveal that equity-based financing via musharakah mutanaqisah seeing as the innovative Islamic microfinance model that suit to the B20 communities compares to debt-based financing

قضية النظم من منظور علم البلاغة؛ دراسة تحليلية بلاغية: [Versification Issue from the View of Rhetoric Discipline: Rhetorical Analysis Studies]

    No full text
This study deals with one of the important subjects in the Rhetoric Discipline, i.e., versification issue. It is considered the first issue been raised by Imam Abd al-Qaher al-Jarjani, the founder of rhetoric, during his research and his argument on the issue of miracles in the Holy Quran. This study discusses the versification thought and reveals its features under the rhetoric perspective. The objective of this study is to be a prominent reference and to discuss the versification thought, and his theory of versification from its inception until it established in this discipline. The Arabic literary taste and sense possess the disclosure of the secrets of rhetoric, it relies on the awareness of style and the verbalization theory. The clarity of the significance or its ambiguity can only come through versification thought. In this study, the researchers rely on the inductive and analytical method, by extrapolating evidence from the Qur’anic verses related to the versification thought based on Abdul-Qahir al-Jurjani analysis’ theory. The study concluded that the reason for the emergence of versification theory is the interrelation of the word and the context of what is required by grammar with its validity and that eloquence and rhetoric does not come except from that versification. Finally, the researchers concluded that the versifications are the only verdict in terms of rhetoric because the decoration in poetry when expressing does not mean that the versification of speech deserved eloquence or rhetoric compared to the Qur’an, the great miracle far from decoration.

Furthermore, academic stress could also cause a decline in student’s academic performance. Therefore, it is necessary for the student to be able to cope and relieve stress. Religious coping strategies are one of the effective ways in overcoming academic stress. This study was aimed to explore and understand students\u27 experiences of religious coping methods when facing academic stress. A qualitative method by using interview was used. A total of five respondents from the public universities were involved. The data from interviews were analysed by using thematic analysis from five respondents. This study discovered three specific religious coping behaviour that was employed to cope with academic stress; 1) worship in the heart, 2) worship verbally and, 3) worship by action. It has also identified three themes on the impact of religious coping on 1) cognitive, 2) emotional and 3) behaviour. From this study, it can be concluded that specific religious coping behavior which had been used by the students is helpful for them in coping with academic stress. The knowledge and awareness of the internal and external stressors also can help the students to identify the best solution and coping mechanism to manage the stress. These coping behaviours also help the students to have a better understanding of how religious coping can affect students in terms of cognitive, emotion and behavior

The Effectiveness of the Malaysian Guidelines for Pre-operative COVID-19 Screening in ORL Patients Undergoing Elective Surgery

The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is a devastating global pandemic affecting many countries worldwide. It has a huge impact on the country’s healthcare system as well as its socio-economic wellbeing. Majority of elective surgery was deferred in order to provide beds, resources and treat COVID-19 cases. Resumption of elective surgery requires a well-planned process and adherence to standard guidelines to protect both the healthcare providers and patients. Pre-operative COVID-19 screening will be one of the new norms for patients undergoing surgery. This study was aimed to evaluate the pre-operative COVID-19 screening for elective surgery among Otorhinolaryngology (ORL) patients in Hospital Ampang based on the current Malaysian guidelines for undertaking surgery during COVID-19 pandemic and highlight the screening protocols implemented by the Ministry of Health. This retrospective review was conducted in ORL Department, Hospital Ampang. We reviewed the surgical registry of  117 patients who underwent elective surgeries under general anaesthesia from June till September 2020. There were 62 patients (53%) below 18 years old and 55 patients (47%) above 18 years old. There were 76 cases (65%) involving aerosol-generating procedures. A total of 23 patients (19.7%) had COVID-19 screening done pre-operatively based on the Malaysian guidelines patient selection and all results were negative. None of the patients experienced any symptoms, complications or morbidities related to SARS-CoV-2 infection post-operatively. The Malaysian guideline on pre-operative screening for COVID-19 is applicable for institutions with low to moderate local transmission of SARS-CoV-2. Targeted group or risk-based protocols are beneficial for improving cost-effectiveness and reducing workload burden during the critical period. As the pandemic evolved, the guidelines have to be revised based on the prevailing situation to suit the best clinical practice for the benefit of patients and healthcare personnel without disrupting the surgical services

Tai Chi to Preserve General Health of Elderly during the COVID-19 Pandemic

SARS-CoV-2 virus is more severe in the elderly and contributes to most death cases. This is postulated due to the presence of multiple comorbidities and age-related immunological changes like immunosenescence and inflameaging. Immunesenescence causes impaired viral clearance, while inflameaging causes exaggerated response inappropriate to stimuli that triggers life-threatening cytokine storm. Hence, home-isolation prevents infection among the elderly and this limits their physical activity. Sedentary lifestyle eventually worsens pre-existing chronic disease and increases the risk of acquiring a new one. Tai Chi is one of the exercises recommended for the elderly during home-isolation. This literature review aims to provide information regarding the groups suggested for Tai Chi, its benefits, as an exercise to be practiced by elderly to maintain general health during COVID-19 and adverse effects. Tai Chi is for those aged 50 years and above or individuals with certain chronic, degenerative or psychological conditions. The systemic benefits are reduction in blood pressure, improves lipid profile, reduction in bone loss and musculoskeletal improvements; whereas neurologically, it reduces cortical shrinkage and improves depression, anxiety and insomnia. Moreover, it induces immune-regulation, which leads to enhancement of the immune system and inhibition of age-related chronic inflammatory condition, inflameaging. These may be protective against severe COVID-19 illness yet further studies are warranted. The adverse effect includes minor musculoskeletal pain and aches. In conclusion, Tai Chi is an ideal exercise for the elderly to maintain health during this challenging pandemic. However, the elderly need to be guided for the proper technique to perform this exercise at home

Adaptation of Workflow during COVID-19 Pandemic: a Malaysian Radiology Department’s Experience

The rising demand of chest imaging during the COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated adaptations to be made to the workflow in radiology departments, particularly in regard to personal protective equipment (PPE) guidelines and operations protocol. The guidelines were implemented to reduce the risk of disease transmission to frontline radiology personnel. With the rising number of COVID cases in the community, suspected COVID patients may present to our hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) even though it is not a COVID-designated hospital. Patients who present to ED are stratified as Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) cases if they exhibit respiratory symptoms, and non-SARI for those without respiratory symptoms. Imaging examinations performed for SARI patients must adhere to the new workflow. Radiographers and doctors performing Computed Tomography (CT), ultrasound and mobile radiography who come in contact with SARI patients must don full PPE. Prior to mobilization of patients, the routes must be cleared, and the cleaning team will standby for terminal cleaning. For portable examinations, donning and doffing of PPE is done in the department. All appliances must be covered prior to examination and sanitized after. Guidelines for usage of common areas such as pantry and prayer room are also employed to avoid crowding and to maintain adequate physical distancing. Adherence to the new workflow and guidelines is imperative to prevent workplace transmission from patients or other healthcare workers

COVID-19 pandemic has caused a profound effect on the public mental health around the world. Fear and anxiety of this new disease and uncertainties about the future has led to stress to the society and especially to university students. The objective of this study is to assess depression, anxiety, and stress level experienced by dental students of the Faculty of Dentistry, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) during the first period of Movement Control Order (MCO) by Malaysia government. A Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) was distributed online to all USIM’s dental students to assess their psychological impact and mental health status. The questionnaire included demographic characteristics of the respondents. A total of 175 students were involved in this study. Majority of the respondents are female (79.4%), first year dental students (25.7%) and were staying at home with their family (94.9%) in the midst of the outbreak. Overall, the depression, anxiety and stress (DASS-21) scores were normal. However, the proportion of student’s anxiety level was apparently higher than depression and stress. A significant finding showed that students who stayed at home were more anxious than those who stayed at hostel (p=0.035). Pandemic COVID-19 lockdown had impacted the psychological state of the USIM’s dental students mainly on their anxiety level. Mental health among the students should be carefully monitored by the university particularly at the faculty level to prevent further mental breakdown
