Ambiguity of Interpretation: the Gender-Conscious Attitudes in the Dissident Works of the Czech Writer Lenka Procházková

    Get PDF
This paper explores the presence of gender-conscious attitudes in the works of the Czech author Lenka Procházková (born 1951), a member of the dissident movement during the communist regime. It argues that her writings took issue with patriarchal social structures, yet sometimes camouflaged these challenges behind criticism of the totalitarian rule. These expressions, which one might be tempted to consider as feminist from a Western and 21st-century point of view, emerged within East European dissident culture and probably without exposure to Western feminist concepts. Procházková developed a model of an inner exile for dissidents that originated in a canonical work of Czech literature by Božena Němcová and from which one of her female protagonists draws strength. Thus, her works suggest that Western gender theories are limited in their potential to assess East European dissident women’s writing, when they fail to include local literary traditions

In the 17th century, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth became a country that French people liked to visit. Many of them left descriptions of the country which was different to their own in certain aspects. One of these aspects was Polish people’s religiousness and their attitude to nonCatholic religions. They were surprised at tolerance for people of another faith among the nobility and at the royal court, the co-existence of churches of different denominations and the lack of mutual aggression. On the other hand, they could see Polish people’s attachment to tradition and their original rites, at the same time pointing out their excessive demonstration of religious feelings, sometimes even bordering sanctimoniousness. In the 17th century, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth became a country that French people liked to visit. Partners in Polish-Russian couples have different opinions concerning women’s appearence. Stressing femininity and paying much attention to attractiveness of a female-partner seems to be very important to Russian partners of both sexes. In this paper, this phenomenon is analyzed from two perspectives. The gender perspective pays special attention to the diversities in the evolution of partiarchal model in Poland and Russia. The analysis from the perspective of cultural anthropology leads to the conclusion about manifestation of Russian identity in Polish-Russian relations. Concidering “femininity” an important category and laying a metaphysical emphasis on it seems to be one of the ways of the “being Russian” manifestation.Partners in Polish-Russian couples have different opinions concerning women’s appearence. The article outlines the last 20 years of Croatian feminist theatrology and its relation to national and Western theoretical currents, as well as to specific historical contexts. Appearing for the first time in the nineties, with Lada Čale Feldman’s analysis of contemporary women playwrights, Croatian feminist theatrology has developed rapidly. In 2001 a first overview of the discipline was written by the same author, in which the position of Croatian theatrology in relation to the Western theoretical mainstream was defined in postcolonial and gender terms as a self-conscious Other with hidden subversive potential. While most of the feminist theatrological works in the nineties were characterised by their opposition to the monolithic definition of the nation by pointing out its non homogeneous nature (for example, in Dubravka Crnojević Carić’s analysis of historical plays in national theatres), in the noughties new topics are introduced: theatre and performance as bodily experience, performativity (Judith Butler’s theory critically revisited by Lada Čale Feldman), multiple identity of the actress in her interchange with the audience, and ethical responsibility and social role of the theatrical event (Nataša Govedić). These topics develop previous theoretical issues and the personal concerns of their authors, as well as being a response to current national theatrical productions and to historical and political contingencies marked by the collective disenchantment of the post-transition age and new risks of repatriarchalisation. The idea of active participation in society in order to change and improve it (in particular by using the power of the theatre in countering social violence, as in the work of Nataša Govedić), is strictly connected to the ancient question of tragic predestination and the inevitability of misfortune, which introduces into Croatian theatrology the issue of the tragic worldview in feminist criticism and epistemology. The article outlines the last 20 years of Croatian feminist theatrology and its relation to national and Western theoretical currents, as well as to specific historical contexts.
