An interesting conceptual dispute, usually called a confrontation between “the old” and “the young”, developed at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Although by its name defined as a “clash of generations”, the dispute was basically rooted in differences between two groups of writers concerning their attitudes toward arts: of traditionalists, whose starting point was the principle of the unity of truth, beauty and good, and of modernists, who relied on aestheticism and concept of l’art pour l’art’. “The young”, while upholding individualism, particularly used to stress their anti-Catholicism. The author checks whether at their root there was anti-Catholicism. He comes to the conclusion that Croatian Moderna was not an organised anti-Christian or anti-Chatolic movement, even though it isn’t doubtful that anticlericalism of “the young”, to a large degree, assumed contours of antagonism towards public expression of Catholicism in culture, harbingering at the same time secularist conceptual processes that were expressed later in the political field and all the other fields of social life.An interesting conceptual dispute, usually called a confrontation between “the old” and “the young”, developed at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The article investigates the interconfessional polemical literature as a valuable source offering an insight into the major values of the society of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 16th–17th centuries. These texts also help understanding phenomena other than the merely religious ones. In the debate, juridical and political arguments were used too. We focus on the case study of Hipacy Pociej’s Antirrēsis (Ruthenian: 1599; Polish: 1600), written in response to Marcin Broniewski’s Apokrisis (1597). Pociej, who had an outstanding political career before becoming a Uniate bishop, mastered these arguments perfectly. His work is imbued with the mentality of the communitas nobilium, which also played a part in his lexical choices. The article investigates the interconfessional polemical literature as a valuable source offering an insight into the major values of the society of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 16th–17th centuries. During the Second World War Slovenian Catholic Church existed under the occupation of the fascist countries – Italy and The Third Reich. Starting from the concept of “external branding” of states and nations, the paper analyses the speeches and messages of Pope John Paul II dedicated to Croats and the Croatian state, spoken and published during his pontificate (1978–2005), in order to uncover how he perceived and presented the Croatian identity. The author believes that Pope John Paul II, thanks to his charisma and significant public impact, as well as extensive knowledge of the Croatian identity, contributed greatly to strengthening the recognisability of Croats in the global public and to promote their values, interests and aspirations.Starting from the concept of “external branding” of states and nations, the paper analyses the speeches and messages of Pope John Paul II dedicated to Croats and the Croatian state, spoken and published during his pontificate (1978–2005), in order to uncover how he perceived and presented the Croatian identity. The article refers to the religious and cultural turning point that took place in the Piast state due to the act of accepting Christianity by the prince Mieszko I (who died in 992) in 966. These issues are presented from the view-point of a controversial interpretation regarding the source foundation and literature, number of which has increased over the decades. The baptism of the historically first Polish ruler was preceded by his marriage with the Czech princess Dobrava (who died in 977), which resulted in the alliance with the Přemyslid monarchy and in the growing connections with Germany along with the conflicts with the Veleti. The consequence of the 966 year’s events was the initiating of the Christianization processes in the whole state of the Piasts and its gradual accessing to the circle of Latin culture. In effect, the grounds for the institutional Church were formed, and the Polish aspirations for being a member of Western culture, which have lasted for all the centuries, were established. The article refers to the religious and cultural turning point that took place in the Piast state due to the act of accepting Christianity by the prince Mieszko I (who died in 992) in 966. Women and the Emancipative Projects of Bulgarian Modernity

The main focus of the current study is the role of periodicals in the emancipation of the woman in a modernizing Bulgarian society. From a social and political perspective, female virtues, rights and duties become an object of varied debates in Bulgaria at the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th centuries. Women’s newspapers and magazines participate actively in these debates whilst familiarizing their female readers with the ideas and struggles of women in Western Europe, presenting diverse philosophical concepts, and discussing established cultural models. In these periodicals there appear materials which endeavour to cultivate models of emancipative behaviour; these publications include translations and authentic literature with a „feminine” axis. Female identity in this period gets formed within respective periodicals and the circles clinging to them, and it comes to represent a complex entity of, on the one hand, radical concepts stressing equality and female rights, and, on the other, conservative perceptions of the place of the woman in the modern household environment

In those endeavors, Šeptytsky was concerned not only with the interests of his Greek-catholic clergy, but with the welfare of Catholic clergy in all Polish eparchies, advocating further independency of the Church from state authorities. This thesis is a study of the role of Andrei Šeptytsky, the Metropolitan of the Ukrainian GreekCatholic Church, in discussions on articles of the Concordat between the Apostolic See and Poland.
