The article raises the question of functioning of Cyrilo-Methodian tradition in the Bulgarian culture in the conditions of modernity. The subject of analysis is the traditional and originally religious notion of the “Slavic / Bulgarian enlighteners”. It is argued that Cyril and Methodius are presented as patrons of enlightenment, first understood as education, and then as an historical epoch, and that is why they become absolute role models of a citizen, a Bulgarian, an Orthodox, a communist. The conclusion is that the starting point for understanding the modern narrative about the creators of Slavic alphabet should be the idea of enlightenment, which in the course of time has been secularized and concretized. The article raises the question of functioning of Cyrilo-Methodian tradition in the Bulgarian culture in the conditions of modernity. In 2006 for the first time after more than 30 years a new translation of Aesop’s fairy tales into Bulgarian by Vladimir Atanasov was published. Aesop’s tales were also translated into Macedonian for the first time (by Valerij Sofronievski) and published in 2008. The article contains discussion and comparison of both translations. A collection of both volumes and classic editions of Aesop’s tales were described and translations were made from them. The authoress precedes her arguments with a short outline of the history of Aesop’s translations into Bulgarian. Particular attention is paid to the translation of bishop Sofroni from the early 19th century, because both discussed contemporary translations clearly refer to this work.In 2006 for the first time after more than 30 years a new translation of Aesop’s fairy tales into Bulgarian by Vladimir Atanasov was published. The focal issue of the present paper is the conventional periphrasis as an object of contrastive research. Such expressions may have different cross-linguistic equivalents, including full, partial, parallel and zero counterparts. The present paper aims to discuss Polish periphrastic expressions and their Croatian equivalents in order to determine and analyze the relations between the units in question. The Polish units (165) are lexicographically attested, while their Croatian counterparts have been determined on the basis of dictionaries, corpora and interviews with native speakers of the Croatian language. The conventional periphrasis have not been researched from this perspective and the results may be useful for Polish-Croatian lexicography. The study shows that zero equivalents constitute the biggest group (91), followed by full equivalents (61) with significantly less numerous groups of partial and parallel counterparts (respectively: 5 and 8).The focal issue of the present paper is the conventional periphrasis as an object of contrastive research. The subject of this research is an unknown Slavic translation of Sermon 5 John of Sinaya’s Scala Paradisi (Lestvica) in a Serbian Menaion and Triodion Panagyric, rewritten from an old Bulgarian antigraph which has preserved the archaic grammatical traits of the prototranslation. In the sermon’s text, forms of asigmatic aorist and first sigmatic aorist with a preserved “s” are being registered, as well as non-contrahered forms for imperfect, forms of past active I participle formed with suffix -ьш- from verbs with a base ending on -и-, possessive adjectives as a translation of the Greek genitive case for possession, usage of a local prepositionless, excessive prepositionless usage of ablative case, descriptive future with a preponderance of forms of хотѣти + infinitive, dual number forms, non-contrahered forms of complex (determinative) adjectives, etc. The translation of the sermon of the transcript in NHM24 includes rare lexemes that attribute it to the early translations of Cyril and Methodius. It demonstrates similarities to the Glagolitic translations of the hand-written cannon of 10th–11th century. In the article’s introduction, the author points to the history of the book as one of the younger sub-disciplines and to its relevance for literary history. This fact is particularly important for old Dubrovnik where the first printing house was opened only in 1783. In the middle part of the article, certain aspects of manuscript culture in early modern Dubrovnik are studied. The author explains why until the 19th century a large part of the Ragusan literature was circulated in manuscripts and what the advantages of the manuscript compared to the printed book are. The author reminds that manuscripts carried out the function of printed books and indicates that printed books were frequently copied by hand.In the article’s introduction, the author points to the history of the book as one of the younger sub-disciplines and to its relevance for literary history. During the times of Dositej Obradović (1739–1811), i.e. the period of Enlightenment in Serbia, advanced ideas were best spread through literature and the translation of contemporary authors was very common in Serbian literature. Obradović was the first to point out the importance of translation to the Serbs. He advocated the development of literature and culture modelled after more advanced cultures and based on the translation of useful works; he also believed that translation must adapt to the nature of target language. His views particularly influenced same writers from the region of Croatia, namely Pavle Solarić and Jovan Došenović, who were friends also. Solarić translated philosophical, geographical, historical and other documents, while Došenović, under the influence of others, compiled an arithmetic book, as well as the first collection of lyric poetry in recent Serbian literature, with the use of the imitatio procedure too. Translation influenced the genre, subject, style, and especially the linguistic development of Serbian literature.During the times of Dositej Obradović (1739–1811), i.e. the period of Enlightenment in Serbia, advanced ideas were best spread through literature and the translation of contemporary authors was very common in Serbian literature. Tetyana Kosmeda. The focus is on five aspects (distinguished by the above named researcher) of linguistic processes taking place at the moment within the Russian and Ukrainian language systems themselves such as: word manipulation, lexicographic issues, linguistic gender studies, the issue of spoken academic language and the language of teaching, and sociolinguistics. The validity of the research and the conclusions reached by prof. Tetyana Kosmeda were affirmatively verified, with great appreciation on the part of the author for the amazing precision and research skills of the Ukrainian linguist

W hołdzie dla Diderota. Milan Kundera, Kubuś Fatalista i ich pan

In his meta-literary and para-textual statements, Milan Kundera has been frequently turning to the issue of the enlightenment narrative experiments considered as the initial ones for the twentieth-century (post)modern creative strategies. Those experiments resulted from the striving for suppression of the over-prescription characterized the classicist rules, and they managed to direct attention to the literary genres which were undermined by the Enlightenment era that is in other words and above all, novel. In order to reveal this “modernity” of the eighteenth-century prose, the Czech writer in the work entitled Jacques and his master (1971) performed a “cultural translation” (variation) of the famous text by Diderot into the form of drama. Kundera was focused on the devices used by the French encyclopaedist which enabled him to expose the “evidence of trick” regarding the anti-illusion and fictitious character of literary representation of the world. He was, therefore, interested not so much in the philosophical and ideological background of Diderot’s tale dedicated to the romances of Jacques the Fatalist, but in the author’s freedom in his “play with the romance’s conventions” which even then was undergoing the process of fast schematisation. In his meta-literary and para-textual statements, Milan Kundera has been frequently turning to the issue of the enlightenment narrative experiments considered as the initial ones for the twentieth-century (post)modern creative strategies. The monograph called Identita v literatuře Těšínska (Identity in the Literature of Czech Těšín Region) deals with the works of the Polish national minority in this region, especially with the literature after the World War II. The author also deals with the reception of works by Czech and Polish authors and the translation activities of the Polish minority. Particular studies bring specific results of Martinek‘s expert research and give an inspiring reflection of the topic being discussed. The book thus adequately follows the author‘s earlier work on the literature of Těšínsko, especially on the works Identita v literatuře českého Těšínska. Vybrané problémy (Identity in the Literature of Czech Těšín Region. Chosen Problems), 2009, and Życie literackie na Zaolziu 1920–1989 (Literary Life at Zaolzie 1920–1989), 2008, and a number of other partial studies. The monograph called Identita v literatuře Těšínska (Identity in the Literature of Czech Těšín Region) deals with the works of the Polish national minority in this region, especially with the literature after the World War II.
