The paper discusses the issue of cultural memory in a translation of literary text. Based on material of Miljenko Jergović’s story Gurbet and its Polish translation, the article shows how elements of source cultural memory present in the original text are being “lost” when translated to other language and culture. The term of “losing memory” is used figuratively to present the consequences of a translator’s (conscious and/or unconscious) decisions on which specific features of source culture are to be preserved (foreignization) or not (domestication) in the target text. These decisions influence the image of source culture that the reader of the translation can “produce” in the wake of reading. For instance, Polish translation of the story “Gurbet” only partly preserves the memory of Christian-Islamic and Slavic-Ottoman intercultural (or even transcultural) coexistence in the region of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is one of the main topics and motifs of Miljenko Jergović’s works. As a result, Polish reader cannot produce the same image of the source culture as the reader of the original. The paper discusses the issue of cultural memory in a translation of literary text. Czech Written Literature as a Medium of Memory [and Oblivion] of Hlučín Region

The following paper is based on the concept of literature and mediality of memory (Astrid Erll) which deals with the function of literary texts in creating and maintaining collective memory. Using these methodological incentives, it focuses on the determination and characterization of ways in which Czech literary works co-create and preserve the memory of the 20th century Hlučín Region, as well as, vice versa, the ways involved in suppressing some layers of memory and oblivion. The area described is selected, inter alia, because of its discontinuous and multi-layered memory influenced by geopolitical changes in Central Europe. The study thus provides a more detailed view of how artistic literature, as a medium of collective memory, can function within the phenomena of the so-called abused memory and memory work (Paul Ricoeur). The following paper is based on the concept of literature and mediality of memory (Astrid Erll) which deals with the function of literary texts in creating and maintaining collective memory. In the article, the image of Polish democracy/autocracy during the Second Republic has been reconstructed. The subject of the analysis were the autobiographical notes entitled Osam godina u Varšavi written by Julije Benešić who stayed in Warsaw in the years 1930–1938 as a delegate of the Yugoslavian Department of Eductaion and Science. From his currently updated notes, a picture of Poland emerged as a state in which the basic civil rights were regularly broken including those guaranteed by the Constitution. The most glaring examples of the non-democratic actions regarded the problems of the national minorities (specifically the Polish-Ukrainian and Polish-Jewish relationships) as well as the prisons for the political opponents (Bereza Kartuska and Brześć). What is more, the observations made by the Croatian translator, writer and linguist illuminate in the form of interesting conotations the Polish mentality. In the article, the image of Polish democracy/autocracy during the Second Republic has been reconstructed. An important, though underestimated theme in Polish poetry written by women is the thread of poetry engaged in social and political matters, thematizing the connection between literature and civic life. Poetesses are often accused of not rooting their works in history and of unwillingness to bring up current topics. Yet the problem is not the lack of interest in history and its political and social dimension, but the distinct way of its conceptualization, the relationship between the individual – though not always revealing its sex – subjective “I” in relation to history and challenges of its times. That is manifested, among others, in poems by Wisława Szymborska, Krystyna Miłobędzka, Bogusława Latawiec and Urszula Kozioł, which, to a different degree, exhibit the strategies of personalization, autobiographication, somatization and trivialization, characteristic of women’s poetry regarding the martial law period in Poland. An important, though underestimated theme in Polish poetry written by women is the thread of poetry engaged in social and political matters, thematizing the connection between literature and civic life. The article documents the relation of performance art, actions, interventions, happenings, and the democracy of capital for the ruling power through double optics. The first optics constitutes a niche within which art is treated as a crime, as in the case of e.g. the individual guerrilla action Black Peristyle (Crni Peristil) from 1998, the author of which was summoned for interrogation at the Department for Terrorism and War Crimes. The second optics constitutes a niche within the framework of which art engagingly views what is political, what is criminal, what is taking place in this Balkan planetarium of ours – thus demonstrating that personal is (indeed) political – on the example of the independent scene on the one hand (Močvara Club and ATTACK!; I only address the independent scene of Zagreb on this occasion), but also the concept of “Green Democracy” (whereby I used the syntagma by Vandana Shiva) on the example of the activist practice of Animal Friends, as well as the examples of the artistic practice of multimedia artist Ivan Mesek, who also sought to indicate the suffering of animals on the barbed wire (Hungarian-Croatian and Slovenian-Croatian borders). With the aforementioned examples from the niche of animal rights, I sought to document the refugee crisis on the Balkan Route through the optics of equalising speciesism (species-based discrimination) and racism. The article documents the relation of performance art, actions, interventions, happenings, and the democracy of capital for the ruling power through double optics. Democratism of Dragojla Jarnević on the Example of her Diary

The paper analyses, in the context of Dragojla Jarnević’s Diary, the concept of democratism from the authoress’ viewpoint of the world regarding the liberal values that represent foundation of democracy. Considering the problems related to the issue of contemporary democracies eminent intellectuals of the 20th and 21st century have expressed a line of doubts and objections, thereby threatening the concept of democracy, or twisting democracy in its own contradictions. In retrospect, during Dragojla Jarnević’s lifetime and work, there was an evident complexity and ambivalence of disseminating liberal ideas in the area of today´s Croatia. Shaping and expressing of Dragojla Jarnević’s democratic views shows that it is possible to interpret democracy from different points of view – on the one hand, it is the best social model, on the other hand, it sometimes transforms in its contradiction. Certain contradictions are observed in Jarnević’s personality, however, her personality eventually reveals a brave and democratic (literature) subject

The release of the newest anthology of macabre short stories “Вбивство на вулиці...” (2019) affirmed the superb state of homebred horror literature. The aim of this paper is to analyze and evaluate the seventeen stories that form the aforementioned anthology. Analysis of the anthology has proven that despite a few creative shortcomings of young litterateurs, the “Вбивство на вулиці...” anthology maintains a high level of quality and deserves to be called a bestseller

Przez język ukrycia po słowo na „g”. Kim są bohaterowie czasów queer before gay?

Who (and what) was silent about the story told by heteronormative society? And how is the fragment of this story seen by “Others”? The article shows that the time of “queer before gay” includes (in Polish) not only well-known names such as: aunt or pedal, but also slang: ‘lala’ (doll), ‘przyjaciółki’ (friends), ‘siostry’ (sisters in Polish, girls in English), gays “from the outside of society”, as well as heterosexuals who got a ticket to the alternative world of the excluded. I tell this story from the perspective of the performative function of language (Althusser, Austin, Butler) and mechanisms of knowledge/power (Foucault). I focus on the activities of homosexual men encoded in their “hiding language” (sociopolitan gay). I show how the creation of the “homosexual” identity closed the community of aunts and pedals in a precisely defined form. And how camp and queering reality allowed them to function in this form. This article is thus another element of decoding the so-called language of concealment, so-called sociolect of Polish gays (aunts and pedals) and queering history of Poland (part of the queering history of Central and Eastern Europe).Who (and what) was silent about the story told by heteronormative society? The narrativization of the trauma in the process of artistic narration contributes processing traumatic experience, is an important element of constructing of autobiography, gives a chance to retrieve own history, which is not overshadowed with tragic parental discourse, helps to achieve balance between traumatic and positive contents of autobiographical memory, fulfills interpsychological functions. The article considers the experience of inheriting the traumatic memory in prose of Magdalena Tulli and autopsychotherapeutic functions of it’s narrativization with the help of elements of psychotherapeutic methods (family constellations, a dialogue with a child in yourself, deconstruction and reconstruction of the life narratives, re-membering, therapeutic metaphor, focusing).
