The Importance of Being Present: A Comparative Reading of Montaigne, Baudelaire, Canetti and Desnica

    Get PDF
Even though they are different in many ways, Montaigne’s essay “Of Experience”, Baudelaire’s poem “The Clock”, Canetti’s play The Numbered, and Desnica’s novel The Springtimes of Ivan Galeb share a common trait. They all highlight the importance of now. This comparative study analyses various ways in which they depict the present time and demonstrate how the past and the future can disable mindful living in the present

The article thematises the relationship of the will to rule and the will to be ruled in the aforementioned dystopian novels by Aldous Huxley, George Orwell and Ray Bradbury. The first part of the article points out Hannah Arendt’s observations on the nature of totalitarianism, the second part deals with the similarities concerning the status of literature in the fictitious totalitarian societies represented in the three novels, whereas the final part exemplifies Arendtʼs views through Étienne de La Boétieʼs writings on “voluntary servitude”. The conflict between those who want to be ruled and those who want to be free reflects the clash of those who want to annihilate literature and those who want to preserve it.The article thematises the relationship of the will to rule and the will to be ruled in the aforementioned dystopian novels by Aldous Huxley, George Orwell and Ray Bradbury. Between Aesthetics and Politics: Socially Engaged Art on the Internet

    Get PDF
The author discusses the changes in the model of democracy that have occurred since the Internet began. The hierarchical model of representative democracy is replaced on the Web by participatory democracy. On the example of Siksa and Bread Resolution (Rozdzielczość Chleba), the author shows up the transformations of the model of literary communication on the Internet. She also indicates ethic role engaged art takes in the contemporary society. Artists that produce socially engaged art do it in the name of those who do not exist in public space, those whose voice is not heard and who cannot defend themselves. Nevertheless, the author comes to the conclusion that the real democratic revolution can only take place outside the Web

In the analysis of Croatian political poetry, although the article speaks only about texts on the subject of Ante Pavelić, Josip Broz - Tito and Franjo Tuđman, I also refer to all those who have written or are still writing sycophant texts, somewhere on the margins of good taste and obsequious poems. Works about the mentioned historical figures are just a name, a sign of the ideology represented by: fascism, socialism, nationalism (spiritual renewal). The analysis comprises the following topics: apotheosis, mythological narratives, government and social authority, revisionism. The name-induced conflict on the social scene is purely symbolic and future-oriented, but also deals with values that will determine the re/presentation of the Republic of Croatia. The article deals with the analysis of the relationship between art, literature, and democracy, starting with the interpretation of Deleuzeʼs reading of D.H. Lawrence, Apocalypse. It is shown that in the contemporary world we are faced with a radical turn of knowledge, values and ways of thinking. Instead of the word prophecy, the act becomes a vision of transparency that has its most powerful means in the logic of mass media interaction. Hence the image that precedes the world has the potential for transforming the idea of the Book into a post-apocalyptic era of visualization of objects. With the help of Deleuzeʼs concepts such as multitude, difference and becoming, the article focuses on the criticism of the democratic emptiness of the world from which the secret has disappeared, and there has been only writing for survivors, the Book for Zombies. Is this a metaphysical testament at the time when writing has nothing more to do with the reference framework of modern art, when a change in the society could still set goals and tasks? The article deals with the analysis of the relationship between art, literature, and democracy, starting with the interpretation of Deleuzeʼs reading of D.H. Czesław Miłosz and Jerzy Andrzejewski: The Holocaust as Catholic Moral Crisis

    Get PDF
This article examines the wartime texts produced by two deeply believing Catholics – Jerzy Andrzejewski and Czesław Miłosz. In 1942, at the time of the deportations to Treblinka, these young but already prominent Warsaw men of letters and believing Catholics engaged in a correspondence which examined the ethical crisis of the Jewish genocide and its impact on Christian humanism. Miłosz and Andrzejewski followed their epistolary exchange with literary responses to the 1943 Ghetto Uprising. Whereas the letters conceptualized possibilities of moral restoration, the literary works – Miłosz’s two poems, Campo di Fiori and Biedny Chrześjanin patrzy na getto (A Poor Christian Looks at the Ghetto) and Andrzejewski’s novella Wielki Tydzień (Holy Week) – focused on the devastating impact of the Jewish genocide on their Polish Catholic world. These literary works see the event of the Holocaust as an irrevocable failure of the Catholic dogmas of caritas and love for the Other

This essay – actually a scientific article included in the frame composition – is devoted to the innovative interpretation of literary agon in terms of the knight ethos on the background of Harold Bloom’s “anxiety of influence”, additionally enriched with references to Aeschylus’ and Eurypide’s “duel” in the Frogs by Aristophanes. On theoretical and methodological ground, the main research path is associated with an additional interpretation of Harold Bloom’s idea of intervals. “Running into Madness to Stay Sane”: the Spirituality of Nature in the Autobiographical Texts of Female Prisoners from Goli Otok Prison Camp

The text concerns the camp for political prisoners established in 1949 in Yugoslavia on Goli Otok island. This theme was almost entirely absent from public discourse before the 1980s, and real changes and developments in discussions about this part of the history of postwar Yugoslavia occurred only after Tito’s death. Goli Otok as the largest and most infamous camp in communist Yugoslavia is considered a symbol, its name recognized as a synonym of a physical and psychological system for destroying people. In the text I analyze autobiographical texts written by women prisoners (such as Milka Žicina and Vera Cenić). A large number of female inmates were sentenced just for being related to or keeping close contact with a male “enemy of the state”. Thus women were treated not as independent subjects, but as mothers, sisters and wives subordinate to male family members. The social exclusion of women prisoners and their families exacerbated the feeling of isolation and continued after leaving the camp. I am interested in the detail of the strategies of storytelling which are related to spirituality (focusing on nature) both during the period of isolation, when they searched for a way to survive it, as well as after release when the women tried to start a new life

Trebaju li čudovišta, mutanti i utvare glasati? Monstruozna hrvatska lirika i načelo demokratske jednakosti

The paper starts from the assumption that Croatian modern lyric, from Matoš to Maleš, is haunted by various monsters, phantoms and mutants, and possessed by ghosts. Phantasmal hair speaks, the body changed by illness acquires autonomy, bird-men, space-twins and angels inhabit the humanized world, the dead seek eternity, the turtle measures itʼs own existence in relation to space and time, and Jesus-fish according to the degree of its own evolutionary transformation, while language cyborgs and hybrid beings are born. The lyric about monsters is itself a monstrous discourse. In this discourse human existence is necessarily contaminated by the abhuman and the parahuman, language includes its own mutations, and the encounter with meaning depends on the ultimate deformation, hybridization and disappearance of meaning. Thus, in the very center of our humanity, in the artistic form that determines the measure of the humanity of our community, questions about what is humane and inhumane, how to determine the boundary between them, and is not the general understanding of humanity always-already determined by oneʼs own inhuman or a-human are raised. Looking at a series of lyric texts, the paper will analyze these relationships and subsequently show their possible political and legal effects. I will refer to theoreticians who read the lyric as a linguistic event and performative type of utterance (J. Culler, P. de Man, B. Johnson, and others) and to thinkers who, to say it simply, perceive the ideas of equality, law and justice as phantasmal, mutated, scandalous or monstrous democracy (G. Agamben, J. Rancière, J. Derrida, J-L. Nancy and others). The paper starts from the assumption that Croatian modern lyric, from Matoš to Maleš, is haunted by various monsters, phantoms and mutants, and possessed by ghosts.
