As an attempt at presenting the social work of professor Roman Pollak in the interwar period, this article provides an analysis of the documents held by the Polish-Italian cultural organisation Polonia-Italia in Poznań. Między nonkonformizmem a kolaboracją. Kontakty polsko-niemieckie w biografii Jana Emila Skiwskiego

In the interwar period, Jan Emil Skiwski gained recognition as an outstanding literary critic. While the Nazis occupied Poland during World War II, as one of the few writers with ideological motives, he collaborated with the Germans, supporting their propaganda activities, including in the magazine “Przełom”. His attitude was met with general condemnation. After the war, the writer chose to emigrate, hiding behind a changed name, especially given that in communist Poland, he was sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment and loss of public rights. An interesting episode in his post-war biography is the friendship he developed with the German intellectual Jürgen Rausch during his stay in the Allied camp for prisoners of war in Italy. The article tries to present these special Polish–German relations of Skiwski. In the interwar period, Jan Emil Skiwski gained recognition as an outstanding literary critic. Motywy faustyczne w twórczości Czesława Miłosza

The article discusses the references to Faust by Johann Wolfgang Goethe present in the works of Czesław Miłosz. They appear in his poems, as well as in essays and non-literary texts, e.g. interviews. The references to Goethe in Miłosz’s work are also of interest, especially included in autobiographical statements. The article attempts to indicate certain regularities concerning the occurrence of intertextual references to Goethe’s tragedy, related to the poet’s worldview, his aesthetic choices and biographical context. The considerations included in the article lead to the conclusion that the hero of the tragedy symbolises the content which, after World War II, made it possible to name and understand the processes that led to the catastrophe of war and the rejection of humanity. Faust can be a tool for self-characterisation or an accusation against German culture and the cult of science and progress, leading to the alienation of the individual. The article discusses the references to Faust by Johann Wolfgang Goethe present in the works of Czesław Miłosz. Iwona Chmielewska’s picturebook abc.de published in 2015 has been called a ‘dictionary’, ‘primer’, ‘ABC book’ and it has been compared to an encyclopaedia. Early-concept or concept books have been mentioned in its context, as well as the title of other books by Chmielewska, ‘thinking ABC’, this time as a specific name for a particular type of work. The terms ‘rebus’, ‘puzzle’, ‘riddle’, ‘intellectual game’ also appear frequently. All this together suggests how complex and multi-layered the book is and how much it draws on various forms. The aim of this article, therefore, is to look at what forms, in what way and for what purpose Iwona Chmielewska uses in abc.de and how it all relates to contemporary trends in the development of non-fiction picturebooks.Iwona Chmielewska’s picturebook abc.de published in 2015 has been called a ‘dictionary’, ‘primer’, ‘ABC book’ and it has been compared to an encyclopaedia. The readers of Rozalia Wojkiewicz’s book W spektrum Wyspiańskiego. Witraż w poezji Młodej Polski (In Wyspiański’s spectrum. Stained glass windows in Young Poland Poetry) are presented with a unique study of Stanisław Wyspiański, his work, his journey along the trail of “barbaric” cathedrals, his passion and aspirations, the spirit of the era and, above all, an analysis of stained glass – a special type of text reflected not only in poetry and one which grew out of man’s aspirations to understand what is hidden, created, fragile and at the same time incomprehensible. The analysis conducted by Rozalia Wojkiewicz serves as a gradual, planned entry into the world of the Young Poland stained glass collection, explains the reasons for the interest in the subject, and presents the valuable state of research on it and the method of its observation. The readers of Rozalia Wojkiewicz’s book W spektrum Wyspiańskiego. „Dzienniki mojego życia” Gustawa Zielińskiego – refleksje edytora

The article is an attempt to familiarise the readers with not only the source, Gustaw Zieliński’s Dzienniki mojego życia (Diaries of My Life), but also with the work on its first edition. Over a period of a few months (when these comments were noted down), the character of the text changed almost completely. One could even say that it transformed from a meticulously maintained personal text into a kind of notepad or sketchbook, which lost its diary-like character and became a sort of record of memories. The significance of this document, the range of themes discussed in it (among others, the literature, the social and cultural life of the first half of the 19th century) are all arguments in favour of taking up a laborious editorial work in order to publish this work. This article describes the stages of this work and discusses the ordering processes that make this source text interesting to a non-specialist reader

Przyjaźń i respekt. Wokół korespondencji Stanisława Pigonia i Romana Pollaka

This sketch is based on the correspondence between Roman Pollak and Stanisław Pigoń between 1918 and 1968. The relationship between these two excellent literary historians, both students of the Jagiellonian University in the early 20th century, has both private and professional aspects. It also illustrates the fates of Polish scientists in the Second Polish Republic, during World War II and the occupation, and in the period of the so-called social realism. The ethics of friendship and the sense of creative fulfilment turned both scholars into friends devoid of jealousy and competition, content with each other’s successes and honestly congratulating each other on their achievements. The friendship between the professors from Cracow and Poznan was also based on respect to everything related to the university and academic calling. They both believed in the university that lasts and persistently fulfils its mission; both felt responsible for it and for the Polish studies in Poznan and Cracow. Finally, they exhibited strong attachment to the teaching profession. In the relationship between Pigoń and Pollak, one may find the realisation of a comprehensive and complete model of academic friendship which encompassed both the exchange of specific goods as well as personal satisfaction and the preservation of the highest personal and moral values. This sketch is based on the correspondence between Roman Pollak and Stanisław Pigoń between 1918 and 1968. Obcy, czyli wróg – o sposobach prezentowania Niemców w powojennych programach nauczania języka polskiego

In this text, I show how Polish–German relations were depicted in the educational discourse. I analyse post-war Polish programmes and curricula, paying special attention to those from the second half of the 1940s, as they are the clearest example of how the way that the image of our Western neighbour was presented fit the ideological line imposed by the government at the time. I am interested in the then-current selection of topics and the prescribed reading, as well as in the accompanying didactical commentary which, in the first few curricula, takes the form of ideologised briefings. I also underline the way that schools were intertwined in the legitimation processes, which benefited the government’s interests. Of special interest to me is the identity project forming part of education, especially the model of Polish patriotism which was built over the figure of “the enemy” – which is also apparent in today’s form of patriotism. In this text, I show how Polish–German relations were depicted in the educational discourse.
