Mahomet jako centralna postać wyobrażonej opery w opowiadaniu „Gambara” Balzaca
The article discusses the fragment of Balzac’s short story Gambara in which the titular character discusses his opera. The focal point of this article is a character from the opera written by Paolo Gambara – Muhammad. The elements used to build the character (character traits, transformations, biography, relationships with his environment, actions, emotions etc.) were analysed in the context of the musical means used to present them and of the entire short story. The background of this analysis consists of a short overview of the philosophical ideas about music and science expressed by Gambara in order to better present the sources of his ideas and the musical solutions that he used. The article discusses the fragment of Balzac’s short story Gambara in which the titular character discusses his opera. „Wy oświeceni, my dzicy ludzie jesteśmy, ale my więcej od was umiemy”. Postacie operowe Wojciecha Bogusławskiego w obliczu utraty wolności
This article constitutes an attempt at recreating the possible allusive readings, political references and hidden meanings in three operas by Wojciech Bogusławski: Dla miłości zmyślone szaleństwo (Madness made for love), Axur król Ormus (Axur, the king of Ormus), Izkahar król Guaxary (Izkahar, the king of Guaxara). Key for this search are the attitudes of the characters in the analysed operas towards the loss of freedom – one may argue that their ways to cope with the violence and the ruthless autocratic tyranny could be perceived as contemporary. This is why the story, which is in its outer layers one of an unhappy love, became for the eighteenth-century viewers a story of the most important contemporary politics. Teatr cieni: „Wieczór w Teatrze Wielkim” Stanisława Balińskiego
The text is devoted to an emigration poem by Stanisław Baliński, A Night at the Grand Theatre (1943), in which the Warsaw opera became a synecdoche of the pre-war Warsaw, and the entire poetic structure is built as a kind of virtual stage on which special characters appear and perform their roles. This text is an interesting contribution to the research on the influence of the imaginarium of the musical theatre on the imagination of twentieth-century poets, and at the same time performs a specific functionalisation of the operatic character – in several meanings of the word. „Nie wierz tak niedorzecznej baśni” . O tożsamości postaci „Królewny Śnieżki” Roberta Walsera i Heinza Holligera
This article is devoted to the characters in Heinz Holliger’s opera Snow White (1998) based on Robert Walser’s dramolette (1901) of the same title. Taking into account the chronology of the plot, the analysis and interpretation focuses on the evolution of the relationships of the characters struggling with the baggage of a difficult past written in the Grimms’ fairy tale. Snow White, the Queen, the Prince and the Huntsman juggle with each other’s versions of events, swapping positions at the expense of the characters’ individual contours, succumbing to the changeability of their feelings and opinions, not stopping in their search for a post-tale identity which would allow them to coexist harmoniously. The discussion emphasises the psychoanalytical approach and criticism of language characteristic of the period in which the dramolette was written. The interpretation of the libretto is complemented by the presentation of selected musical aspects, corresponding with the character of Walser’s text and determining the final meaning of the operatic work. This article is devoted to the characters in Heinz Holliger’s opera Snow White (1998) based on Robert Walser’s dramolette (1901) of the same title. W poszukiwaniu postaci (w XIX-wiecznych teoriach opery i prozie artystycznej)
The article analyses texts regarding the opera character, or indirectly linked to it, by a number of authors from the late eighteenth century to the last decades of the nineteenth century: Sulzer, Rousseau, Hoffmann, Stendhal, Baudelaire, Wagner. The author focuses on their theoretical texts and artistic prose. The analysis indicates a strong multilateral involvement of the reflection on the topic of character in contemporary aesthetic views and anthropological concepts. The article analyses texts regarding the opera character, or indirectly linked to it, by a number of authors from the late eighteenth century to the last decades of the nineteenth century: Sulzer, Rousseau, Hoffmann, Stendhal, Baudelaire, Wagner. Od postaci do głosu. O librettyzacji współczesnego dramatu
The analyses presented in the article reverse the traditional course of studies which assume that the poetics of a dramatic text is instrumentally superior to that of the libretto. In order to adapt the hypothesis that contemporary drama is increasingly libretto-like, inserted into its structure is, excerpted by opera theatre researchers, the libretto poetics treated as a genealogical directive specific to the genre which differentiates it from the “third kind” in its classical expressions. The breakup of the basic categories constituting a drama ( character, dialogue and plot ) brings it visibly closer to the traditional operatic libretto with features characterised by Albert Gier, among others. The post-dramatic aesthetics adapted by contemporary opera and drama, which removes the character or reduces it to a voice treated merely as a medium, absolutising the way a word sounds and the poetics of a transsystemic remix all result in the emergence of a common aesthetics of the stage chimaera genre. The analyses presented in the article reverse the traditional course of studies which assume that the poetics of a dramatic text is instrumentally superior to that of the libretto. Galicyjska recepcja Chopina. W kręgu Marceliny Czartoryskiej i Stanisława Tarnowskiego
The paper is dedicated to the role of princess Marcelina Czartoryska, a friend and student of Chopin, as an initiator of the research into his life and work, and to Stanisław Tarnowski’s essay about the composer. On 19 March 1871, in the hall of the Saski Hotel, a public lecture on Chopin was presented by Tarnowski, accompanied by Czartoryska’s magnificent performance. The income from this event was donated to Towarzystwo Wzajemnej Pomocy (mutual help association) for the support of the poor students of the Jagiellonian University. Czartoryska accompanied Tarnowski, illustrating his speech by playing the piano. Tarnowski published his work twice: in 1871 and 1892. He set the life and work of Chopin in the context of the period. Based on the sources, he reconstructed the spiritual biography of the artist, his creative personality both in terms of the psychological and the social aspects. He saw in Chopin “the fourth greatest poet of the divided Poland,” the fourth Bard. The paper is dedicated to the role of princess Marcelina Czartoryska, a friend and student of Chopin, as an initiator of the research into his life and work, and to Stanisław Tarnowski’s essay about the composer. Romantyzm polityczny Jarosława Jakubowskiego albo przepisywanie Dziadów (na prawicy)
The article analyses two dramas by Jarosław Jakubowski: Dożynki and Nowy Legion (New legion), which their author designed as attempts at updating the political frame of Mickiewicz’s Dziady (Forefathers’ Eve), (especially ‘Warsaw salon’), read in the context of the ‘Smoleńsk romanticism.’ The right-wing approach to Mickiewicz’s archdrama offers a diagnosis of the social and political divide (‘two Poland’) in the aspect of the clash between two worldviews: left-wing and liberal versus right-wing. Mickiewicz’s authority is supposed to strengthen the right-wing diagnoses, hence it is easy to spot the numerous attempts at instrumental and anachronic reading of the romantic legacy. At the same time, the analysed dramas show the importance and the textual and ideological productivity of the romantic paradigm.
