Suzanne Santoro’s Towards new expression: An Interference in Carla Lonzi’s Theory of Sexuality and Aesthetics

    Get PDF
In 1974, the Brooklyn-born artist Suzanne Santoro published, in Rome, a small volume of photography titled Per una espressione nuova / Towards new expression with the feminist publishing company Scritti di Rivolta Femminile, founded by Carla Lonzi and the women of the radical feminist group Rivolta Femminile in 1970. The artist’s book was animated by the question of how the representation of women’s bodies – especially the erasure of women’s genitals in the history of art – had conditioned women’s self-determination and their knowledge of their own sexuality. Towards new expression was in dialogue with Lonzi’s ideas about women’s sexuality and especially with her La donna clitoridea e la donna vaginale (The clitoridean woman and the vaginal woman, 1971) but nonetheless, as soon as it was printed and started to circulate, Lonzi expressed her disappointment and discomfort with it. This reaction, and the accusations it contains, are for me the starting point for a reflection on the relationship already investigated by many scholars between art and feminism in Lonzi’s thought. Il teatro degli anni settanta. Tre vite ribelli

    Get PDF

Backward Modernism and Queerly Desiring Women in Early 20th-Century British and French Fiction: Rosamond Lehmann and Jeanne Galzy

    Get PDF
This article seeks to open up comparative, transversal scholarship on the representation of queer women in Europe. Engaging critically with associations of lesbians with modernism, analysis draws on Heather Love’s concept of “backwards modernism”, and Susan Lanser’s notion of “confluence” to bring into dialogue two underexplored  novels that recount the queer experiences of young women in England and France: Rosamund Lehmann’s Dusty Answer (1927) and Jeanne Galzy’s Jeunes filles en serre chaude (1934). We identify several striking points of convergence between the novels, and argue that while they are both ambiguous in their portrayal of non-normative sexuality, they show how early queer sexual experiences are far from a “passing phase”; rather they are transformative.

Study of the female figure and her relationship with the sea in contemporary Spanish drama on the theme of migration. Within this line of late Hispanic theatre, the connection between woman and sea has become a metaphor for the dead, a reflection of a tragic reality. The investigation focuses on three works that are particularly significant for the very personal aesthetics of the authors and for the originality of the thematic treatment developed in each of them: Angélica Liddell’s Y los peces salieron a combatir contra los hombres, Antonia Bueno’s Aulidi (hijo mío) and Juana Escabias’ Babel.

Mitochondrial Replacement Techniques (MRTs), designed to prevent mitochondrial diseases, are far from being an efficient and safe opportunity to eradicate mitochondrial DNA’s disorders. Indeed, there are still many scientific, ethical, and social concerns. Particularly when it comes to identity issues for MRT-conceived people and non-therapeutical uses. This paper aims to suggest some reflections on these topics, without overlooking scientific grounds and regulatory references.Mitochondrial Replacement Techniques (MRTs), designed to prevent mitochondrial diseases, are far from being an efficient and safe opportunity to eradicate mitochondrial DNA’s disorders. Intelligenza artificiale e autodeterminazione in materia sanitaria

The use of artificial intelligence in medicine raises many legal issues. This essay examines how medical AI intersects with the right to informed consent and the principle of self-determination. The author highlights that the complexity and opacity of machine learning could dissuade the patient from consenting AI treatment and, therefore, induce him to give up the benefits that this technology usually brings to his health. Consequently, the author suggests adjusting the content of the information due to the patient, taking into account the limited knowledge that ordinary people have about artificial intelligence, and, more generally, redefining the boundaries of the principle of informed consent. The use of artificial intelligence in medicine raises many legal issues.

    No full text
The essay takes its cue from considering the supervening ascertainment of the death of the disappeared, absent or presumed dead person as an event which entails changing the structure of interests dictated by these institutions. In light of the foregoing, after having noticed that, thanks to the technological evolution in the fields of molecular biology and forensic anthropology, as compared to the past, the proof of death nowadays can occur with greater probability, the essay focuses on how the mentioned proof affects the succession process relating the missing person. The essay takes its cue from considering the supervening ascertainment of the death of the disappeared, absent or presumed dead person as an event which entails changing the structure of interests dictated by these institutions.
