L\u27artista dell\u27essere.
The article focuses on a presentation of Filippo Bergonzoni’s book L’artista dell’essere. Arte e bellezza nel pensiero di Antonio Rosmini (Orthotes, Napoli-Salerno 2020), a monograph on Rosmini’s aesthetics from his early essay Sull’idillio to the Teosofia, his final unfinished masterpiece. A pathway in which the philosopher of Rovereto also engages in a dialogue with Alessandro Manzoni, in search of an ontology of beauty which finds its origin and its ultimate end in the idea of being. The article focuses on a presentation of Filippo Bergonzoni’s book L’artista dell’essere. Il concorso per l’immagine di copertina
At the end of the issue, the journal publishes all the proposals received for the cover image and thanks the authors who joined the competition ‘The Geography of the Image’.
Call for papers ‒ In the current ‘global condition’ in which humanity finds itself, the image has assumed a fundamental role in governing the media and in creating new mythologies that give life to deep behavioural models: different outcomes of various evolutionary lines marked by history. This role is evident in Western culture but also in other cultures, especially in the Eastern one that today proposes alternative communication spaces, full of fantastic suggestions. The geographical location of these multiple ways of articulating images gives rise to a zoning of the planet in distinct ‘representative plates’ that collide along borders similar to faults, where ‘conceptual and visual earthquakes’ are produced that act in a continuous comparison of continuity, discontinuity, similarities and differences. Investigating this ‘geography of the image’ through appropriate thematic maps that describe the articulation in space, but also the evolution over time, can provide a new key for reading, theoretical and operational, the transformations of landscapes, cities and buildings, but also the ways of being of the people who populate them. Spatial‒temporal maps therefore, to fully understand also the history of figurative models used by different civilizations. The revolution induced by the 2020 pandemic cannot but play a role in this: it is clear that the mutations it will produce in human life, in every corner of the planet, will become very important and to a large extent perhaps irreversible. As actions, places, gestures and in general all social behaviour change, the images that represent them and the ways of creating them will also inevitably change. It can be expected that the visual forms used in the various cultural contexts will not only change rapidly and profoundly, but will also be divided into directional flows whose geographical distribution today is unpredictable. They will be flows of ideas, symbols and models that will mark the territorial dynamics of new ‘migrations’: perhaps the most global in history, capable of marking new ‘figurative frontiers’; frontiers that may then prove useless and of which, if we can and want, we may wish to do without.
The book by Timothy Brook, Vermeer’s Hat, The Seventeenth Century and the Dawn of the Global World (2009) shows how in that age, a lot of handcrafts – such as hats and porcelain – entered Europe through the massive trading activities of Dutch East India Company. To illustrate this, he conducts an in–depth analysis of Vermeer’s canvases. Brook’s inquiry therefore shifts the dawn of the globalized world – a marker of our contemporary age – to a time when some countries brought to life a world where a network of connections and exchange was arising in a way never seen before. The Age of Discovery was over, and the Age of Imperialism was still to come. Meanwhile, when trading and cultural exchange began, the ‘translation’ of languages from one world to another was required for understanding and eventually integration. First the Dutch and then the English adopted an image language capable of describing both new worlds and home environments in the same way, thus making new situations and different landscapes easy to access and understand for people viewing them in the homeland. There was therefore a sort of ‘transmigration’, an attempt to adapt visual codes the Picturesque to overseas environments and landscapes. In other words, well–established pictorial codes were employed as a ‘lens’ to look at a unique, faraway place. For a long time, up to the invention of photography, the Picturesque was the global language used to make even very faraway, exotic places familiar, and in doing so, re–inventing overseas landscapes through the European cultural matrix. This paper uses several iconographic cases to illustrate how the Picturesque became a global code, a kind of ‘common language’ representing different, faraway cultures through a Western pictorial language.

ABSTRACT: Pavese defined his literary production as the process of clarification of the myth, which he tried to accomplish obstinately in all his works (the so-called «fragments of the monolith»). For him, the myth coincided with the archetypical image of the hill, the dwelling place of the irrational whose blood and sacrifice are manifestations (Paesi tuoi, La casa in collina, La luna e i falò). The exception of this are two novels: La spiaggia (1942), which «is not fragment of the monolith», and Il compagno (1947), «a political Bildung roman about the rise of a communist political conscience». What make them different from the rest of Pavese’s work is that they miss the mythological element: in both of these novels, hills are almost completely missing. With my essay, I would like to show how this missing element deprive the novels of a full aesthetical completeness, forcing Pavese to rely on social elements (the description of a bourgeois environment and the awareness of an antifascist conscience). When Pavese gives up his intent of clarification of the myth, his writing lacks autonomy.ABSTRACT: Pavese defined his literary production as the process of clarification of the myth, which he tried to accomplish obstinately in all his works (the so-called «fragments of the monolith»).
Embryos, Organoids and Robots: "legal subjects"?
The article addresses, in necessarily succinct terms, the theme of the reconfiguration of the concept of "legal subjectivity" and of "legal personhood" as a fundamental legal status for the human being, due to the scientific and technological developments, both in the field of human biological life and of artificial intelligence, considering, in particular, the cases of embryos, organoids, and AI-systems.The article addresses, in necessarily succinct terms, the theme of the reconfiguration of the concept of "legal subjectivity" and of "legal personhood" as a fundamental legal status for the human being, due to the scientific and technological developments, both in the field of human biological life and of artificial intelligence, considering, in particular, the cases of embryos, organoids, and AI-systems
Individuals who attempt conception with donor sperm or donor eggs face many obstacles. They frequently experience social stigma associated with infertility and thus they do not disclose their children about the existence of a donor. When donor-conceived children are made aware of gamete donation, sometimes they claim the right to know their genetic origins. This right is not granted in many States, since the principle of anonymity is laid down in national and international laws. It is therefore appropriate to question the role of genetics in defining parental relations and personal identity. Nonetheless, it is necessary to highlight the detachment between States and candidate health care recipients, who increasingly move from one jurisdiction, where treatment is unavailable for them, to another jurisdiction in order to obtain the treatment they need. In this scenario, the right to know genetic origins has to be discussed.Individuals who attempt conception with donor sperm or donor eggs face many obstacles. From "familial searching" to "forensic genetic genealogy": new frontiers – and challenges – of DNA analysis in criminal investigations
Since its discovery, DNA analysis has been an important tool in criminal investigations: the creation of national DNA databases, retaining the genetic profile of criminals, revealed to be crucial in solving serious crimes. In recent years, the expansive use of DNA analysis, together with scientific and technological progress, led to the development of new sophisticated investigative techniques, from the so-called "familial searching" to the more recent use of "forensic genetic genealogy", based on the exploitation of commercial genealogy databases by law enforcement authorities. Notwithstanding their effectiveness, these new instruments raise serious ethical and legal concerns: this paper aims at presenting these complex challenges, by underlying the need to strike a proper balance between the public interest to a rapid and efficient identification of unknown offenders and the dangerous shift towards "genetic surveillance".Since its discovery, DNA analysis has been an important tool in criminal investigations: the creation of national DNA databases, retaining the genetic profile of criminals, revealed to be crucial in solving serious crimes.
The identity of the person is an essential and distinctive element of his individual heritage and constitutes a real right. Two recent decisions, one of the Constitutional Court of May 2020 n. 127 and one of the Supreme Court, of September 2020 n. 19824, provided an opportunity to reflect on the issue of protecting the identity of children. In the first case of the child born from insemination heterologous and, in the second, of the child born of an anonymous mother, because, in both cases, there are significant problems of balancing the right of identity with other relevant rights or interests. The identity of the person is an essential and distinctive element of his individual heritage and constitutes a real right.
