The discussion on job burnout and increased work demands in the workplace has increased greatly in recent years in Iceland, as well as abroad. Research has mainly focused on occupations and professions where employees work with people, and burnout is often associated with job stress that has not been successfully managed. Job burnout is not limited to those jobs, and the attention could be directed to the positive work-related attitudes of employees and the expected consequences in the attitudes and behavior of employees at work. This paper aims to shed light on the attitude- and experience-related factors that can prevent employees from job burnout and the emotional and behavioral consequences of burnout symptoms, among employees in various occupations and professions in Iceland. Maslach Burnout Inventory General Survey was used to measure emotional exhaustion. Data was collected electronically among 898 employees in different jobs and occupations in a total of 32 organizations in the fall of 2019 for a response rate of 47%. The results show a negative correlation between job satisfaction, perception of fairness, and trust, with burnout, which indicates that job satisfaction, perceived fairness, and trust in the workplace can have protective effects on burnout symptoms. Furthermore, the results show a negative correlation between burnout symptoms and employee commitment to work, and a positive correlation between burnout symptoms and intentions to quit. The results of this study provide insight into the relationship between positive attitudes of employees with burnout and possible negative effects on organizations as a consequence. The results contribute to knowledge about burnout among employees in various occupations in Iceland. Results should also be useful to managers and those working in the field of HRM in their targeted efforts to reduce or minimize burnout at work.

Innovation is believed to be an important contribution to the progress of firms and society. It is not only of vital importance to develop new and improved products and services to meet increased competition, but also to meet requirements due to climate change, contribute to sustainability, and to meet ever-increasing demands in health services, just to name a few. To induce even more effective innovation activities, policymakers have emphasized cross-border collaboration between those who receive grants for R and D projects. This research deals with the question of the impact of these new demands for cross-border collaboration. A qualitative methodology was applied, where twelve participants involved in innovation projects which received grants from the Icelandic Technology Development Fund were interviewed, whereof six who received grants within the Eurostars funding programme, which requires cross-border co-operation, and six who received what we refer to as local grants. The results indicate that the projects based on cross-border cooperation certainly benefit from the broader knowledge base they have access to. The grantees developed their network in a wider and more effective way than when the projects were based only on local grants. This study contributes to a greater understanding of cross-border collaboration in innovation projects, which is increasingly important to meet today’s ever-increasing demands for rapid response in global innovation. The limitation of this study is mainly twofold, firstly that it is only based on interviews with 12 individuals, all from the same country and culture and, secondly that interviewees who participated in the Eurostars projects might be more experienced with using grants and may therefore be more capable in utilizing knowledge from partners. The main contribution of this research is therefore that it provides good insight into the topic rather than offering results that are generalizable.Nýsköpun er almennt talin mikilvæg forsenda framfara fyrirtækja og samfélagsins. Styrkþegar Eurostars styrkjanna þróuðu tengslanet sitt á breiðari grundvelli og með áhrifaríkari hætti en þegar verkefnin byggðu einungis á staðbundnum styrkjum; þeir náðu að efla nýsköpunarfærni sína sem gæti stuðlað að viðvarandi nýsköpun og loks nutu þátttakendur í vistkerfi nýsköpunar víða að jafnframt ávinnings af þekkingu þeirra með þeim hætti að leitt gæti til framfara út fyrir landsteinana. Takmörkun þessarar rannsóknar eru aðallega tvenns konar, annars vegar sú að einungis er byggt á viðtölum við 12 einstaklinga, alla frá sama landi og menningu, hins vegar að viðmælendur í hópnum sem tengdust Eurostars verkefnum kunna að búa almennt yfir meiri reynslu og þekkingu á styrkjakerfinu og eru því hugsanlega færari í að nýta sér þekkingu samstarfsaðila. Rannsóknin veitir þannig fyrst og fremst innsýn í viðfangsefnið og ekki hægt að alhæfa út frá niðurstöðunum

The paper considers the development of social housing in Iceland, from its beginnings with the construction of the first workers’ dwellings in the 1930s. Housing in Iceland is compared with that of the neighboring countries and an overview of recent sociological housing research is presented. Also, the roles of the labour movement and the Icelandic political parties in the formation of housing policy are described. The paper comes to the main conclusion that social housing in Iceland developed quite slowly until the 1960s, both in comparison with the overall development of domestic housing construction and with the amount of social housing construction in other countries. Uniquely, Icelandic social housing has mainly been owner-occupied, albeit with restricted rights for the owners to sell such flats freely on the housing market. Initially, the labour movement and the workers’ parties were the main proponents of social housing, but gradually the initiative in Icelandic social housing construction was transferred to the state and to the municipal authorities. By the turn of the new millennium, the growing strength of neo-liberal ideological hegemony led to the privatization of the entire Icelandic owner-occupied social housing stock.Í greininni er fjallað er um upphaf og þróun félaglegs húsnæðis á Íslandi sem hófst með byggingu verkamannabústaða á fjórða áratug 20. aldar.

Research has shown that prejudice and negative attitudes toward those who are experiencing mental illness are widespread, but those attitudes reduce the quality of life and recovery of individuals experiencing such problems In this article, we use a survey to evaluate the extent and causes of negative attitudes among the public in three countries: Iceland, the United States, and Germany Our results indicate the existence of widespread prejudice and negative attitudes in all three countries. We also show that people across the three countries are more negative toward individuals experiencing mental illness if they define the condition as an illness. Finally, the results indicate that prejudice and negative attitudes toward this group are less common in Iceland and in Germany than in the United States.

There has been a considerable amount of sociological work dealing with unemployment and its influence on individuals and society. Little has been said, however, about the connection of recessions to workers’ insecurity, stress and depression. There has also been little research into the results of the economic crash on those who did not lose their jobs. This overview will deal with Icelandic research which has rectified this by researching work environments of the financial sector (banks and pension funds) and municipal employees (elementary and primary school teachers, senior services and group homes) domestically following the economic crash which began in the fall of 2008. The research, which builds on qualitative and quantitative data, shows that the financial collapse in Iceland resulted in a considerable increase in depression, work absences and relationship problems among people that were not unemployed. Workers’ departments and offices which saw direct reductions or large changes rather risked employees becoming sick. It is therefore important to strengthen work solutions that promote a healthy work environment following an economic crisis. This is especially true about those who work in places where many organizational changes have occurred and where workers have been laid off.Á vettvangi félagsfræðinnar hefur talsvert verið fjallað um atvinnuleysi og áhrif þess á einstaklinga og samfélög.

With a growing number of people with a foreign background in Icelandic society in recent years, the number of heritage languages of children in schools has also grown. The aim of the article is to shed light on the language policies of multilingual families in Iceland, methods which they use to teach languages to their children, as well as challenges and opportunities which parents experience related to their children’s multilingualism. The project is a qualitative studywith nine immigrant families and their children’s preschools. The families were selected through purposive sampling in three municipalities in the South and Southwest of Iceland based on information from preschools. The municipalities were selected to reflect different locations and educational policies in Iceland. Data for this article was collected from 2020 to 2021 in semi-structured interviews with altogether ten parents in nine families and four principals in three preschools which the children attended. The findings of the researchindicate that the parents have developed clear language policies which they implement in an organized and diverse manner. They participate actively in choosing which languages they use and teach their children, as well as choosing varied and suitable educational material and heritage language courses. Keywords: Family language policies, bi- and multilingualism, preschools, educational practices.

Democratic leadership can be described as a holarchy, as opposed to a hierarchy, that encourages cooperation and honors democratic values that can lead to social justice. Where democratic leadership is practiced, there is both formal and informal power, participation in decisions is more general, and the development of schoolwork is in the hands of teams rather than leaders.Democratic preschool work is based on equality, diversity, shared responsibility, solidarity, and acceptance of different points of view. Educators, parents, and children who take part in democratic preschool activities characterized by participation, activity, and joint decision-making, and where mutual respect prevails, learn such things. Educators, parents, and children who get to know preschool activities based on hierarchy, rules, controlled organization, and limited participation learn differently. The purpose of this article is to shed light on democratic leadership in preschools and what motivates and hinders preschool leaders and educators from practicing democratic leadership. Democratic leadership motivates educators to be active participants in schoolwork and society. It involves the commitment of educators, parents, and children to shared values of democracy and social justice. One aspect of democratic leadership in schools is to engage people in discussions about ethical issues to deepen their knowledge. Such discussion puts democracy in multiple perspectives. What is primarily believed to motivate democratic leadership is the willingness of leaders to relinquish power and status. Leaders need to be able to show independence in thinking and opinion, and give constructive criticism. Furthermore, they need to have knowledge of democratic processes and practices, and the ability to train and guide others in such matters. Efforts should be made to bring issues to a conclusion through objective debate instead of by using force.Democratic leadership can face obstacles and is often difficult to maintain. The school structure, culture, and history can be hierarchical, as can laws, regulations, curricula, and assessment. Furthermore, it is considered more difficult to establish democratic leadership where social inequality prevails and there is a tradition of silencing marginalized groups. The people within the school, including: educators, parents, and children, may resist changes towards democratic leadership. Leaders do not see a benefit to them in distributing authority or responsibility, and may feel their role is threatened. Democratic leadership is complex, and research shows that educators or parents are often unwilling to commit to democratic practices. Democratic practices can also be time-consuming and require active participation that people are not ready for. The opposition can therefore often lie in the person’s interest in maintaining hierarchy and the traditional role structure, and the person’s belief in it and the advantages of hierarchy. Two questions were raised to guide the research: (1) What are the ideas of eight kindergarten principals towards applying democratic and participatory leadership? (2) What motivates and what hinders? Semi-open individual interviews were conducted with eight ECE managers in Iceland. Two researchers shared the interviews and conducted four interviews each. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and used for further analysis. Data analysis was based on thematic analysis and from the concepts of holarchy and hierarchy. The researchers reviewed the data together with the aim of increasing the credibility of the study. Six themes were identified in the data: 1) the ECE managers’ ideas about democratic and participatory leadership, 2) the decentralization of co-managers, 3) the teams that had been formed in the ECE to distribute leadership and responsibility, as well as about the learning community, 4) democratic decisions, plans and evaluations, 5) the influence that democratic leadership has on the children’s learning in the ECE and their participation in the work, and 6) motivations and obstacles in establishing and maintaining democratic leadership in the ECE.The findings show that the leaders felt it was important to practice democratic and participatory leadership in the preschools. This was viewed as a good way to cooperate with fellow educators, and the work became more enjoyable. One’s own ingratitude, lack of agency, lack of interest, and responsibility were mentioned as the main obstacles in practicing democratic leadership and distributing power and tasks. Democratic leadership is not limited to those in formal management positions, but initiative can come from anyone who responds and adds to the work on their own initiative. In this article, a study of democratic leadership has been discussed with the aim of shedding light on what motivates and hinders preschool directors from using it. In general, the interviewees believed that they use democratic leadership and emphasize democratic preschool activities with the participation of educators, parents, and children. The results relate to participation and social justice in ECE and the importance of doing better when it comes to marginalized groups such as children.

Mealtimes in most Icelandic preschools have remained primarily unchanged for several decades; the children sit with the teachers to partake in family-style mealtimes. In the autumn of 2012, preschool Aðalþing decided to develop an innovative approach to empower and make mealtime pleasurable for children. The preschool Aðalþing opened in 2009, and from the beginning, all food was prepared from scratch and with high-quality ingredients. The innovative approach consisted of children taking their meals in a specially designed dining hall, with attention to the aesthetics, and children’s opportunities to help themselves, for example, choosing a table and the peers with whom they want to sit. All food is served on a buffet at children’s height, where main and side dishes, such as seeds and vegetables, are available. A few teachers are in the room with the children, but they do not sit at the tables or control the conversations or what children choose to eat.The article discusses two approaches to mealtimes: the traditional form called teacherled mealtimes, where teachers sit and have a meal with children family style and the new form of child-led mealtimes. One of the authors led the project implementation in Aðalþing and documented it regularly for eight years through video recordings— the data from which forms the basis of this article. The article examines the conditions needed for the dining hall to work as developed in Aðalþing. We used Sigurðardóttir’s ideas about the framework of conditions needed in all preschools to organize the physical and educational environment and theories about habitus and empowerment as background research.Sigurðardóttir’s framework consists of two conditions: an external condition that the teacher must consider from a pedagogical perspective and internal conditions based on the preschool’s ideology and knowledge of good practices. The idea of the framework conditions proved helpful the development of mealtimes. They made visible what was in the teachers’ power to change regarding the physical and pedagogical environment, what the children had control over, and what was part of their empowerment. The findings indicate that the child-led mealtime supported:Friendship, learning, and children’s joy. The children had time and privacy to talk to each other. No subject was forbidden.A platform for free dialogue among children. The children used the opportunity to play with the language. It was common among the children to discuss the food together while they ate. Making jokes about the food or deciding it was something else (eating fish while pretending it was pizza, for example). The children’s helpfulness and consideration. They poured each other’s glasses, buttered bread, and picked food from the buffet for each other, to name a few tasks. There were few conflicts among the children. When conflict arose, the children usually showed how solution-oriented they were by resolving the conflicts themselves. The children’s empowerment and independence; they entered the dining hall independently, chose their food and where to sit, ate by themselves, spread the bread, cut the food, and talked about whatever topic was on their minds. The children’s awareness of the food; they discussed a lot about their food, its quality, and how it tasted. Those discussions were more likely to take place when they liked the food. The findings show that children developed their habitus, which, among other things, was expressed and manifested in the taste of food, the humour, and the discussions between them. This research could be used to discuss children’s mealtimes and empowerment. The research supports preschools in examining how mealtimes are conducted.

In Iceland and elsewhere, there is an increased awareness of the key role that vocabulary plays in learners’ literacy development (Auður Pálsdóttir, 2017; Beck et al., 2013; Roessingh, 2016; Sigríður Ólafsdóttir & Baldur Sigurðsson, 2017). The academic words vused across different subject areas (Tier 2) are pivotal for students’ academic procedures (DiCerbo et al., 2014; Lawrence et al., 2016).The purpose of this research was to develop a Tier 2 Icelandic academic word list (í. listi yfir íslenskan námsorðaforða, LÍNO-2). Such a list is important since it provides information about Icelandic words that learners need to know for active participation in school, their reading comprehension, discussion and writing skills. In the Icelandic language, the number of words is countless, and therefore, it is important to know what words lie at the heart of academic success. Thus, it is v to research which words and how many words are useful to work with at each education level. Words that go beyond the most common words of the language (Tier 1) are called academic vocabulary (Beck et al., 2013; Roessingh, 2016). A part of these words is taught systematically within the various school subjects. Those are Tier 3 words. However, the words in Tier 2 are often overlooked by teachers and neglected in school activities. Words in this category are general, high-utility academic words used across various fields of study. They play a key role when discussing complex issues. The learners’ poor knowledge of these words is one of the main reasons why they have difficulty understanding a written text, which in turn, reduces their ability for academic progress.A new Icelandic corpus (Málheild fyrir íslenskan námsorðaforða, MÍNO) was compiled containing selected student and academic texts from Tagged Icelandic Corpus (MÍM, Stofnun Árna Magnússonar í íslenskum fræðum, n.d.-a) and Icelandic Gigaword Corpus (IGC, Stofnun Árna Magnússonar í íslenskum fræðum, n.d.-b). MÍNO has a total of 31,680,235 running words. All the texts are current texts published this century. Words that appear 100 times or more in the corpus are sorted by frequency. The total word frequency list contains 10,314 words (lemmas, Tiers 1, 2 and 3). Objective and subjective approaches were used to categorise the words of the corpus, i.e., to distinguish between words belonging to Tier 1 and Tier 2, as well as words belonging to Tier 2 and Tier 3 (Dang, 2020). The Icelandic academic word list (LÍNO-2) contains 2,294 Tier 2 words (lemmas) from the new Icelandic language corpus MÍNO (Beck et al., 2013).The words on LÍNO-2 were divided into five bands depending on their frequency in MÍNO. The first band included words from the most frequent 1000 words. The second band included words from the next 1000 etc. (Dang, 2020; Nation, 2001). The frequency bands are a useful reference when choosing words to teach the youngest learners. With the increased student age, the words from lower frequency bands are included step by step. LÍNO-2 is a valuable contribution to teaching Icelandic as a first and a second language. The value of LINO-2 is fourfold. First, the value is for teachers and students in Iceland as an effective tool to enhance student Icelandic vocabulary, reading comprehension and productive language skills, i.e., proficiency in discussing and writing. Second, LÍNO-2 is valuable for developing teaching materials for different age groups and groups with diverse Icelandic language proficiency. Third, LÍNO-2 is important for assessing student status or learning progress of receptive and productive vocabulary, reading comprehension and writing skills. Fourth, the value of LINO-2 is significant for research aiming at keeping Icelandic words alive with future generations. This research is the first of several projects funded by the University of Iceland Research Fund (í. Rannsóknasjóður Háskóla Íslands), the Icelandic Language Technology Fund (í. Markáætlun um tungu og tækni) and the Icelandic language fund (í. Íslenskusjóðurinn), where Icelandic academic vocabulary is the core subject.
