Quality of commitment: Japanese daroo as a speech act operator
This paper proposes a compositional analysis of the meaning of Japanese daroo-utterances with declarative and interrogative force, and final rising and falling intonation. Daroo is analyzed in a framework for speech act felicity as an operator lowering the quality threshold for felicitous assertion. The conveyed meanings of conjecture, confirmation, and doubt uses of darooutterances are predicted from modification of the respective speech act types’ felicity conditions by daroo
Case-marking idiosyncrasy in subordination: the Japanese dative ni and beyond
This article examines Japanese idiosyncratic dative case markings, which cannot be accounted for by the semantics of verbs per se. We argue that the underlying mechanism is best described in terms of “blending of prefabricated forms in language production” (Barlow 2000), demonstrating that the relevant prefabricated structures provide a scaffold for the development of the use of dative ni in question. This study further explores some comparable non-canonical case markings observed in Korean subordinate clauses, suggesting that they can also be similarly characterized

Analiza mechanizmów zachowania spójności w komunikacie multimodalnym na przykładzie relacji na żywo, w ramach teorii modelu sytuacji; propozycja modelu spójności dla telewizyjnego przekazu reporterskiego
The paper presents a model of multimodal message coherence based on Event-Indexing Model of text processing. The approach proposed here enables differentiating between two perspectives on multimodal message coherence: parallel and sequential. It also provides means for comparing the levels of coherence in messages of different types and making predictions concerning how changes in the coherence level may affect processing of a message. Moreover, the model proposed in the paper allows coherence analysis from the point of view of both the author and the audience.W artykule przedstawiono model spójności komunikatu multimodalnego skonstruowany z perspektywy modelu przetwarzania tekstu Event-Indexing Model. Podejście to pozwala na wyróżnienie dwóch perspektyw analizy spójności komunikatu multimodalnego: paralelnej oraz sekwencyjnej. Umożliwia także porównanie stopnia spójności różnych typów komunikatów multimodalnych oraz przewidywanie wpływu zmian poziomu spójności na przetwarzanie komunikatu. Proponowany model daje możliwość analizy spójności zarówno z punktu widzenia odbiorcy, jak i nadawcy komunikatu

Hansa-Georga Gadamera i Thrasybulosa Georgiadesa ujęcia przekładu
The basis for this research form spontaneous use of the word “translation” sensu largo in informal language and dual dictionary meaning of this word, i.e. “translation” sensu stricto and “expressing”. Article focuses on comparison of translation term usage in philosophical writings by Hans-Georg Gadamer and in musicological writings by Thrasybulos Georgiades. Considering translation in the meaning of “expression” and, at the same time, agreeing that music is a speech of tones, one can accept general connection between script and speech described by the German hermeneutist, as a foundation of detailed relation between musical notation and resounding described by Greek music historian. Interpretation emerges as common for expression and translation, but nonetheless it demonstrates itself differently in case of language and music. Specificity of the art of sounds as compared with the art of words is constituted by the difference between words’ meaning and musical structure. In the end, transcription and transposition inherent to art of sounds and completing Georgiades’s term translation can be regarded as musical translations
