Cognitive Aspects of Relative Clause Production In Oral and Written Narratives
The present study aims to investigate relative clause production in Chinese and English from a cognitivefunction approach that explores underlying cognitive, semantic, and discourse-pragmatic factors operative in discourse processing. With this approach we are able to account for both general and specific distributional patterns of RCs between the two languages on the one hand and between speech and writing on the other, using narrative data elicited from native speakers of both languages
Czy dwujęzyczność sprzyja kreatywności? Doniesienie z badań
The paper discusses links between bilingualism and creativity. It begins with a theoretical introduction and then presents research results based on the Creative Behaviour Questionnaire KANH–I (Popek 2000) in a group of 107 high school students. The obtained data was used to test group differences between attendees of classes learning German bilingually and their peers following standard curriculum, which yielded no significant results. The correlation analysis between bilingualism and the dimensions of creative behaviour according to KANH–I yielded no significant results as well. Finally, possible explanations of the results are discussed, along with the limitations of the present study. The paper discusses links between bilingualism and creativity. CZŁOWIEK TO KOMPUTER. O metaforach informatycznych w polszczyźnie codziennej
For more than ten years, computer terms have been borrowed into youth slang as well as standard Polish. These borrowings are used in new metaphorical senses. The paper aims to provide an overview and analysis of computer metaphors, many of which can be regarded as linguistic expressions underlying the conceptual metaphor A HUMAN IS A COMPUTER proposed by the author. An attempt will also be made to reconstruct the linguistic worldview generated by this metaphor.

The goal of this paper is to determine a translator’s role in the process of translation of a scientific text. The analysis centres on philosophical texts translated from French into Polish by the author of the paper: Plotinus or the Simplicity of Vision by Pierre Hadot, Philosophizing ad Infinitum by Marcel Conche, Intellectual Autobiography by Paul Ricœur, Speech and Action in Heraclitus. On the Theoretical Foundations of Moral Action by Michel Fattal, and Le Logos dans le Sophiste de Platon by Michel Fattal. A requirement is usually imposed on the translator of a specialist text to be invisible, transparent, and neutral. However, this analysis shows that this requirement cannot be met in translations of scientific texts
Dylemat audiodeskryptora w procesie przekładu audiowizualnego
The aim of this article is to point out the dilemma concerning the transmission of emotions which faces the audio descriptor when creating audio description for painting reproductions. It will indicate the importance of visual forms, dependencies between the translator, translation and emotions, as well as different approaches to the creation of audio description, with particular emphasis on the transfer of emotions. The theoretical considerations will be supplemented by a qualitative analysis of two emotionally colored audio descriptions
Scalar representations in the semantics of Japanese. From measurements to pragmatics –The case of dokoroka–
This study looks into the scalar properties exhibited by some grammaticalized (and subsequently pragmaticalized) expressions of Japanese that are lexically based on the noun tokoro ‘place’. In particular, the argument will be focused on a conjunctive particle p dokoroka q ‘q, let alone p’. In most cases, both p and q can be ascribed some pragmatically inferred scalar values reflecting gradable properties, but the assessment of such a common scale is difficult in some cases. We argue that such “non-scalar” instances of dokoro-ka, occurring in enumerations, can be represented as cardinalities in the semantic model
\u27To be tensed or not to be tensed?\u27 The case of Vietnamese
In this paper, we scrutinise the interpretation and distribution of a number of morphemes that serve as means of expressing temporal/aspectual relations in Vietnamese, investigating whether they should treated as genuine tense and aspect markers. The main goals of the study are two-fold: (i) empirically, to offer a comprehensive description of Vietnamese tense and aspect, in both pre-verbal and post-verbal domains; (ii) theoretically, to offer new pieces of evidence supporting the claim that Tense and Aspect exist as independent functional categories in Vietnamese
Who I am asking about: What the sentence endings imply about the unexpressed subjects in wh-questions
This study demonstrates that the sentence endings of Korean and Japanese wh-questions can be analyzed as serving to evoke and, in a weaker sense, to mark an unexpressed verb subject. This study further contends that the endings are not complex forms with successive morphemes each contributing to the whole meaning but rather simplex forms each of which has its own meaning and function. This study argues that pragmatic groupings of event participants help the sentence endings to mark subjects in the Korean and Japanese languages as well as other languages of the world
