Mapping the Austrian political spectrum with the help of VAAs
Get PDFThis paper uses data from the Austrian Voting Advice Application (VAA) wahlkabine.at to locate parties in policy spaces for the 2006, 2008, 2013 and 2017 national elections. It formulates an approach that combines positional information from the VAA data with information about issue saliences that stems from the VAA itself as well as from manifestos coded by the regularly conducted Austrian National Election Study. The VAA-inherent and the external weights serve to calibrate party policy spaces that underlie the VAA data. The paper depicts the Austrian political party space by means of a two-dimensional multidimensional scaling (MDS) map, and furthermore assesses the usefulness of the two weighting procedures. The findings suggest that the use of the internal weights cannot make much of a difference in the present form. In contrast, the external weights not only alter the structure of the party space but also enhance the confidence in the results for substantial reasons
Toward a Multi-Causal Model of Successful Conflict Regulation through Territorial Self-Government: Lessons from South Tyrol
Get PDFTerritorial autonomies have been increasingly implemented as tools for the regulation of ethnic self-determination conflicts. Recent literature has primarily focused on the debate about the general conflict-solving potential of territorial self-government in multi-ethnic societies. However, autonomy consolidation is not an entirely endogenous process, but affected by various structural and actor-centered factors. Previous studies have so far given unsatisfactory answers as to the conditions under which reforms of autonomy succeed or fail in post-conflict situations. Building on Social Identity Theory, it is argued that ethnic recognition is the all-important condition for autonomy consolidation, which, however, presupposes specific, favorable framework conditions. A high scope of transferred competencies, weak horizontal inequalities, democratic-inclusive institutions, minority-friendly parties, and international engagement are identified as pivotal factors supporting the process of mutual recognition between ethnic groups. To test our theoretical assumptions, we create a multi-causal process model. We find evidence for the proposed mechanisms in a process-tracing case study on South Tyrols successful autonomy consolidation
Women and the Radical Right: Exploring Gendered Differences in Vote Choice for Radical Right Parties in Europe
Get PDFThis article explores the role that gender differences played in vote choice for radical right parties in European countries from 2002-2014. In particular, the research agenda explores whether men and women differ in regards to the attitudinal variables that drive vote choice for a radical right party. Further, the empirical analysis tests whether predictors of radical right vote choice have differing substantive effects for women and men. Using fixed effects statistical models; the major findings are that men and women do differ statistically on one attitude that correlates highly with radical right vote choice (i.e. far right ideology), but not other important attitudes (anti-immigrant sentiment). Substantively, however, given the same attitudes as men, women have a significantly lower probability of translating extreme attitudes into vote choice for radical right parties

Trump, das am 15. Jänner 2019 während eines Empfangs im Weißen Haus aufgenommen wurde und das sowohl in den USA als auch international für mediale Aufmerksamkeit und Anschlusskommunikation in Sozialen Netzwerken gesorgt hat, zeigt der Beitrag, durch welche Prämissen und Analyseperspektiven der Forschungsbereich Visuelle Politik gekennzeichnet ist und wie eine bildkompetente Politikwissenschaft auf die Herausforderungen einer professionalisierten politischen Kommunikation reagieren kann

Politische Reformen als Auslöser großer Wählerwanderungen: Das Beispiel der Gemeindestrukturreform in der Steiermark 2013-2015
Get PDFDie Reformpartnerschaft aus SPÖ und ÖVP erlitt zwischen 2013 und 2015 in der Steiermark starke Verluste an den Wahlurnen. Vieles davon wurde als Folge der Gemeindestrukturreform dargestellt. Ziel dieses Beitrags ist es mittels einer Difference-in-Difference-Schätzung den Effekt der aus der Gemeindestrukturreform resultierenden Fusionen zu berechnen. Die Ergebnisse der Regressionsanalysen weisen durchgängig auf den gleichen Trend hin: Ein leichter Malus für die ÖVP und ein leichter Bonus für die FPÖ in fusionierten Gemeinden (jeweils rund 1-2 Prozentpunkte). Die SPÖ verliert durchwegs, während die kleinen Parteien (Grüne und KPÖ) nur marginal profitiert haben. Positive Auswirkungen gab es auch für Bürgerlisten, speziell dort wo der Protest am intensivsten war. Insgesamt zeigt sich aber, dass die Gemeindefusionen die starken Wählerwanderungen nur bedingt erklären

An Index of Mediatisation: Comparing Interest Groups’ Political Communication Behaviour
Get PDFThis article investigates the political communication behaviour of interest groups. First, by proposing indices to capture the degree to which mass media have become central for political communication (media logic of communication), and the degree to which conventional strategies aimed at politicians directly govern groups’ communication behaviour (political logic of communication). Based on these two indices, the article then proposes an overall index of mediatisation. Second, the article tests three hypotheses regarding the use of the media logic, the political logic, and the mediatisation of interest groups, and finds that group type, resources, and the level of competition all play a role for how strongly interest groups are mediatized. Thus, this article contributes to the scarce empirical research on mediatisation by a) proposing a way to operationalise this concept which can be adjusted using a different set of variables, but can also be applied for different political actors, and b) by showing the usefulness of the constructed indices in an empirical example for Swiss and German interest groups
Was ist die soziale Dimension in der Hochschulentwicklung? Ergebnisse einer Analyse hochschulpolitischer Strategiepapiere im österreichischen Hochschulsystem
Get PDFDer Beitrag analysiert hochschulpolitische Strategiepapiere zur Frage, was der Begriff der sozialen Dimension im Diskurs um Hochschulpolitik in Österreich bedeutet. Es wird gefragt, welche Deutungen von Chancengerechtigkeit und Bildungsungleichheit mit ihm verbunden sind und welche Fördermaßnahmen damit begründet werden. Methodisch orientiert sich der Beitrag an der Wissenssoziologischen Diskursanalyse (Keller 2011), der Untersuchungszeitraum beträgt zehn Jahre.Die Ergebnisse der Analyse zeigen, dass der Begriff der sozialen Dimension mit der Bologna-Deklaration erstmals im Diskurs auftritt. Darin wurde Employability zum zentralen Bildungsziel des europäischen Hochschulraums. Es zeigt sich die Deutung, durch Individualisierung, Konkurrenz und Wettbewerb die Leistungspotentiale von Individuen effizient auszuschöpfen. Der Begriff der sozialen Dimension wird in diesem Kontext nicht mehr im Sinne der Kompensation gesellschaftlicher Ungleichheit, sondern als Leistungsgerechtigkeit verstanden
