Von einer „Imperatorix“ zu einer „mulier clara“. Kaiserin Konstanze im Spiegel von „Liber ad honorem Augusti sive de rebus siculis“ und „De claris mulieribus“

    Get PDF
The following paper discusses the image of the Staufer empress Konstanze. This important political person was described in two books. On the one hand, Peter of Eboli draws her as a female heroine; on the other hand, the famous writer Giovanni Boccaccio projected his misogyny on her. Their depictions of Konstanze differ enormously due to various ideological mindsets. This text shows how a person herself can become a political term

    Get PDF
This paper deals with the propaganda used by Emperor Maximilian I during the Swiss/Swabian War of 1499, and in particular the mandate of April 22nd. In accordance with the genuine communication situation of the Early Modern period, it was necessary to adapt the respective framework conditions to the corresponding time segment through a theoretical determination of the communication situation. Based on these theoretical premises, this study analyses original sources according to their propagandistic dimensions and investigates the context, the addressed audience and the declared purpose correspondingly

The following paper traces the political and ideological impacts on Alpinism between 1900 and 1945. For this, it not only scrutinises the increase in radical attitudes – and in particular the notion of „Deutschtum“ – in Austrian alpine clubs. It also deconstructs the idealisation of mountains and alpine life in movies of the time as well as their instrumentalisation by the National Socialists

    Get PDF
This paper analyses the role of the Parthian Empire in the Silk Road trade between China and the Roman Empire. It examines Parthian, Roman and Chinese sources to achieve a better understanding of its importance for trade contacts along the Silk Road. As the analysis will show, Roman and Chinese sources differ greatly in their interpretation of the role the Parthians played within these trade networks, and they shed light on different aspects of the relationships, be it trade or otherwise

    Get PDF
This paper explores dimensions of cultural exchange, a research area that traces mutual exchange activities of various kinds in material culture, including portraits and statues, but also tools of everyday life. At the heart of this study is Castle Ambras, a centre of regional cultural exchange activities in Renaissance Tyrol. Since the days of Archduke Ferdinand II of Tyrol, its proprietors cultivated relationships with other European princes interested in the arts. As will be shown in this paper, various objects found their way to Tyrol as part of this cultural exchange – and can still be found in the halls of Ambras’ present-day museum

The oldest texts contained therein date back to the first millennium BC, the youngest to the fourth century BC. Based on these incantations, it will be clarified which demons are mentioned by name and what kind of knowledge the texts reveal about demonic beings

Die Akte Margarethe Babka Geschütztes Leben in einer „Mischehe“?

    Get PDF
The following paper is about the Jewish woman Margarethe Babka, who lived in a so-called „protected mixed marriage“ („Mischehe“) during National Socialism in Tyrol. The status of being a protected Jew was said to be a protection from deportations, anti-Jewish laws or from detention in concentration camps. The aim of this paper is twofold. Firstly, the biographical work will provide background data to a research project at the Department of Contemporary History of the University of Innsbruck, reconstructing the life of Jewish hybrids and „mixed marriages“ in the Gau Tyrol-Vorarlberg between 1938 and 1945; secondly, it will question the aspect of protection in the life of Jews living in a „Mischehe“ during National Socialism in Tyrol by portraying the story of Margarethe Babka

    Get PDF
The following paper deals with the connectivity of the Silk Roads and how these networks function as a driving force of globalizing phenomena, especially of Grobalization and Glocalization, demonstrated by the example of Chinese Buddhism. It will examine the advent of Buddhism and its spread via the Silk Roads, the Chinese response to this new religion, the pilgrim journeys of Chinese monks to India, and the case study of Dunhuang. As will be shown, the networks of the Silk Roads formed a stable basis for the spread of Buddhism to China, amongst other things due to their continuity and the support of official and private institutions

    Get PDF
The connection between migration, integration and isolation is currently being discussed in political, psychological and social sciences as well as the area of healthcare. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the social group of female migrants with small children within the categories family, education and labour market integration. It shows the importance of an intensified integration of this specific group that is highly affected by social isolation through lack of educational and labour market integration. Whereas the first part outlines important theories of integration and assimilation, the empirical part allows a more individual consideration of female migrants and may direct future research on the connection of family, education and labour market integration and their impact on other social minority groups
