Winfried „Mustapha“ Müller and the Algerian War of IndependenceThis paper is about the involvement of Winfried “Mustapha” Müller in the Algerian War of Independence from 1954 to 1962. It will focus on how his work for the FLN helped in the struggle for Algerian independence from the French motherland. In this context it incorporates a transnational perspective on how the war could be won not only by the fighters of the FLN, but also by people fuelling the international discussion talking about the war
Gesellschaftlicher und rechtlicher Status der Sprachmeister*innen in der Frühen Neuzeit. Sprachliche Fähigkeiten als entscheidendes Kriterium?
Societal and Legal Status of Foreign Language Teachers in the Early Modern Age. Language Skills as the Determining Criterion? The following paper deals with the requirements foreign language teachers had to fulfil in order to be granted citizenship in the Early Modern Age. The group of foreign language teachers was extremely heterogenous, originating from different countries, different social standings and lacking institutionalized education. Due to increased mobility and financial insecurities, foreign language teachers were rarely granted civil rights. This paper examines accepted and rejected requests for citizenship to explore what factors led to a positive or negative decision. As will be shown, multiple factors played a role in this process, including the language skills, but also factors such as prominent supporters and financial security
Die Veränderung des alpinen Schutzhüttenbaus vom 19. bis zum 21. Jahrhundert
Changes in Alpine shelter construction from the 19th to the 21st century. A contribution to the environmental history of Western AustriaThe following paper provides a chronological overview of Alpine shelter construction in Western Austria from the 19th to the 21st century. It examines the ambivalent role the “Alpenverein” has played in this Alpine development and scrutinizes its changing attitude to nature conservation. In doing so, the paper argues that different shelter constructions and the discussions surrounding them might be regarded as indicators of a general change in environmental awareness
„Game of Kompetenzen“? Eine Analyse der Einsatzmöglichkeiten von „Game of Thrones“ im kompetenzorientierten Unterricht in Geschichte, Sozialkunde & Politische Bildung
“Game of Competences?” An analysis of possible uses of “Game of Thrones” in competence-orientated history lessonsThis paper assesses whether the popular TV series “Game of Thrones” can be used for teaching (medieval) history in schools. Based on the Austrian history curriculum, it can be said that these representations of an imagined medieval past are a valid and important tool for teaching medieval history as well as for developing certain skills and competences needed to critically analyse and deconstruct representations of the past. This paper analyses various aspects of “Game of Thrones” (such as ethnic diversity, gender, Eurocentrism, etc.) and describes their potential for a didactic approach in history lessons. Additionally, the possibilities of using “Game of Thrones” for a general approach to analysing and teaching the politics of medievalism in the history classroom are discussed

Das Brautinventar der Paola Gonzaga: Hochzeitswagen und Brauttruhen
The Bride Inventory of Paola Gonzaga: Bridal Cart and ChestsThe following paper takes a closer look at the bridal cart and chests of the Mantuan princess Paola Gonzaga, who was sent to marry Leonhard of Gorizia in 1478. With her she brought an adequate dowry, which was listed in an inventory. Based on this document, aspects of the material culture of the time shall be discussed and used to gain insights into the daily life of women and their situation in the 15th century. The analysis will focus on two categories of Paola’s dowry: the partly preserved chests and the luxurious bride cart and its accessories. Those objects also shed light onto the socio-political situation of the late medieval period, and provide insights into the mechanism and imaginaries of medieval dynastic representation, namely of the Gonzaga family
Dezentrale „Euthanasie“ in der Heil- und Pflegeanstalt Niedernhart. Untersuchung am Beispiel ausgewählter Krankenakten.
Wild “Euthanasia” in the care and nursing home Niedernhart. An analysis based on medical recordsThis paper deals with medical records from the Upper Austrian care and nursing home Niedernhart. Under the National Socialist regime, especially after “Aktion T4” was discontinued in August 1941, thousands of people were medically treated in this institution and many of them died. In line with the current state of research, this paper does not question that people were intentionally killed by the director of the institution, Dr. Lonauer, and some of his staff, but rather examines whether targeted killing of patients can be proven by scrutinizing medical records. Twelve of these documents are reviewed in detail

Die Heiligtümer der Nation. Abraham Lincoln, Erinnerungskultur und die „nationale Einheit“ der USA
In US-American nation building, Abraham Lincoln played such a vital role that he became a major focal point in US politics, society and culture. His significance even reached dimensions of religious worship, which represents a key characteristic of US culture of remembrance. Especially in modern, pluralistic democracies, such an intertwining of nationhood and religion may cause societal tensions. This paper deals with Lincoln’s efforts to create a religion of the nation, establishing a hegemonic culture of remembrance. Based on the concept of „civil religion“, it investigates the meaning and implication of religious elements, particularly the „Pledge of Allegiance“, and the role of history in the contemporary USA
