“Pietism is Communication.” Historical network analysis of the correspondence of Johann Christoph Martini (1722–1732)The aim of the following seminar paper is to show how and to what extent the lesser-known Halle Pietists contributed and preserved the communication network between Halle and London, especially after the deaths of its main actors. The methodological approach as the main foundation of this paper is a historical network analysis of the correspondence of Johann Christoph Martini. It will be shown that wide networks, such as the network between Halle and London, can only flourish because of small ego-networks such as Martini’s

“We called for Gastarbeiter, but human beings arrived.” Historical network analysis on the media discourse on Gastarbeiter in Austrian newspapers 1973The following seminar paper analyses the media discourses about so-called Gastarbeiter in Austrian newspapers in 1973. As a methodological basis, the historical network analysis is applied, whereby all relevant newspaper article of the “Presse”, “Kurier” and “Arbeiter-Zeitung” will be examined and evaluated. The conclusion that emerges from the analysis is that, starting in September 1973, a media discourse developed in which the whereabouts and reduction of Gastarbeiter were discussed and Gastarbeiter became a political issue for the first time. However, the focus was never on the Gastarbeiter as people and individuals, with problems, fears and a self-determined future, but only on economic and social advantages or disadvantages for “Austrians”

“Where are the democratic history lessons?” Dealing with the Nazi past in education and society in Austria with the examples of Taras Borodajkewycz and Hans-Ulrich RudelIn post-WWII Austria, the way the Nazi past was dealt with was far from frictionless or consensual. As opposed to the preceding ideologies of Fascism and National Socialism, a new democratic mentality had yet to be formed. In this regard, history lessons at universities and at schools are central spaces for analysing the processes of de-Nazification and democratization. Therefore, the following paper discusses two examples of highly controversial teachings that reflect the larger level of Austrian history after 1945: Taras Borodajkewycz (1960s) and Hans-Ulrich Rudel (1983)

The diffusion of German culture and its perception in travel reports from the 19th centuryThe following seminar paper outlines the description of the Bukovina, a part of the Habsburg Monarchy, in selected travel reports from the 19th century.
