CMEA’s Monetary Institutions between the West and the Global South
The Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA), founded in 1949, provided an institutional space for the economic exchange between socialist member countries as well as between them and the West and the Global South. Its goal was to establish a socialist alternative to the economic globalization project offered by the capitalist West. Analysing the monetary institutions established by CMEA – the Transferable Rubel, the International Bank for Economic Cooperation and the International Investment Bank – the paper argues that these ultimately failed to create an independent socialist economic system and were conducive to de-facto dependencies on the West as well as on the Global South.CMEA’s Monetary Institutions between the West and the Global South

Transnational Trade Unionism. Networks of the Austrian Trade Union Confederation in the Global South between 1955 and 1965
This paper examines the strategies and contexts of the Austrian trade union federation\u27s (ÖGB) networking with African trade unions between 1955 and 1965. By analyzing annual reports and selected journal articles, it identifies Austrian motivations and evaluations of transnational trade union solidarity. Mainly due to activism by the youth department, the ÖGB managed to emancipate itself from the initially influential International Confederation of Trade Unions (ICFTU) and provided an early form of non-governmental development aid in the 1960s.This paper examines the strategies and contexts of the Austrian trade union federation\u27s (ÖGB) networking with African trade unions between 1955 and 1965. The Importance of the Müllerbach for the Textile Industry in Dornbirn
This bachelor thesis aims to investigate the importance of the Müllerbach for the textile industry in Dornbirn during the industrialization of the 19th century. The Müllerbach, as a man-made body of water, uniquely influenced Dornbirn‘s ability to emerge as a flourishing center of the textile industry. As part of the analysis, waterpower is presented as a central source of energy for textile companies. Special attention is paid to the extension of the Müllerbach by Karl Ulmer, which led to the development of a new strand of textile businesses in Dornbirn. This bachelor thesis aims to investigate the importance of the Müllerbach for the textile industry in Dornbirn during the industrialization of the 19th century. The Müllerbach serves as an example of the flowing waters of Dornbirn and should thus allow for conclusions about other streams in the Dornbirn municipal area to be drawn, in particular relating to what extent they were important for the emergence and flourishing of the textile industry in Dornbirn. War on Disease: Polio Eradication in the United States
A War on Disease. Polio Eradication in the United States
This paper investigates how widespread acceptance of the polio vaccination was generated in the United States. It shows that Franklin D. Roosevelt transformed the struggle against polio into a national endeavor and that the fear of polio contributed to the widespread acceptance of the vaccine. The medical researcher Jonas Salk played a key role in fostering public trust in the vaccine. The paper argues that a timely switch from Salk’s inactive vaccine to Albert Sabin’s oral, live vaccine rekindled the national interest in polio and that the war rhetoric on polio further motivated Americans to get vaccinated. This paper investigates how widespread acceptance of the polio vaccination was generated in the United States.
