Indigene und Cook. Der Tahitianer Omai (1751–1780) als Fallbeispiel für das Konzept des „Edlen Wilden“?

    Get PDF
During James Cook’s second voyage of discovery, a young Tahitian by the name of Omai (1751–1780) was taken aboard the Adventure, one of the two ships of this expedition. Omai travelled to England, where he was introduced into the British Upper Class and much admired as a living example of a noble and pure South Sea islander in tune with Mother Nature. Omai became accepted in the highest society circles, was painted by several great artists of the time and became part of the collective hype surrounding James Cook’s voyages of discovery and the new experiences with non-European cultures. This paper compares available scientific literature on this topic and aims to analyze the role of Omai as a historical figure and as the personification of the idealized European concept of the noble savage

    Get PDF
The following bachelor thesis is about the Resistance myth in postwar Italy and its transition during the last seven decades. Starting with an overview of its origins in the first years after the war, the paper describes its transition from an important reference point for all political parties (except the neofascist MSI) towards a controversial locus of memory. It then puts a special emphasis on the last two years, while a center left-wing coalition has been ruling and reinterpreting the myth – again.

    Get PDF
The following pro-seminar paper highlights anti-Semitism at the University of Innsbruck between 1918 and 1938. As such, it is mainly concerned with student societies, both ";Burschenschaften"; and Catholic societies. It will be shown that while these groups had some significant ideological differences, anti-Semitism proved to be a uniting factor. This paper will also trace the history of the student society leading up to the ";Anschluss"; in 1938 and provide evidence that anti-Semitic activities by ";Burschenschaften"; continued well into the second half of the 20thcentury

Future pessimism in the Early Modern era? Reflections on Early Modern future imaginations exemplified by the baroque Vanitas motif. The following bachelor thesis is about the future imaginations of the Early Modern time. The paper follows the question, if there was a factual ‚future pessimism‘ in the baroque era, trying to exemplify this by the booming Vanitas motif. Therefore, the thesis will examine the history and meaning of the motif compared to the trends of the tumultous 17th century. As will be shown, the Vanitas motif was also an art form as well as a manifestation of a transience-consciousness that manifested itself not least in the form of Vanitas still life and baroque poetry
