Conferencia de Aparecida. Documento final
The V Conference of the Latin American and Caribbean Bishops celebrated at Aparecida, Brazil, can be understood in relationship and sequence to the previous Conferences and in the context of the last part of the pontificate of John Paul II. Pope Benedict XVI’s programmatic speech presented the fundamental goals of the Conference. The central structure of the document begins with a description of the current crisis of contemporary culture due especially to the globalization process and considers also the significant number of Latin American Catholics who have migrated toward Evangelical denominations. The Catholic Church, aware with gratitude and joy that she is sustained by the truth of the faith in Christ, calls its members to grow in their vocation as disciples and missioners, emerging from their personal encounter with the Lord. Thus touched by that experience, they feel their call to announce the Gospel of the Life to our peoples.

This article proposes the acceptance of the final documentation from Aparecida within the framework of previous conferences, with a view to a creatively anticipated future. To this end it highlights the document’s insistence on recuperating the theology of the “signs of the times” and its recognition of the decisive value of the option for the poor. By virtue of this key to a theological interpretation of history, it specifies as well three other “signs of the times” in need of serious consideration. These are the cultural claims arising out of globalization, the urgency of social justice and the demands for greater participation for women. Finally, it offers the image of a Church more capable of assuming the task of accompanying this process.
The article tackles the church situation as contained in the basic tenets of fundamen-tal Catholic theology. It states that even though the Second Vatican Council permitted to move away from casuistic morals, advances fell short of expectations. Rather, there has been a stalemate partly due to the prevalence of conservative interpretations of the Council documents. Nevertheless, and even admitting that the stalemate seems to be official in character, the unreformable positions are actually being moved for-ward by various ecclesial, pastoral, and academic sectors. The article explains the necessity to progress toward a communion Church able to move beyond infantile legalism toward a theonomous autonomy, toward an adulthood that grounds solidarity with and service to the world.

The present article aims at describing two essential subject-matters: on the one hand, to show briefly the history and development of how a sector of Theology of the Latin American liberation is understanding the postulates of the pluralistic theology of the religion and their corresponding reasons for that. On the other hand, the article aims at questioning itself if this match can or not be due to the own development of the methodology in the theology of the liberation, or if this step is not justified enough and, therefore, a different way could exist from where the theology of the Latin American liberation can make its own contribution into the reality of a religious pluralism without having to assume the pluralistic paradigm.

In the perspective of Jon Sobrino Latin American christology is characterized as an historial christology: methodologically, it takes as its starting point the historical Je-sus, in order to better understand the totality of Christ, the element considered to be the real starting point of all christology – the confession of Jesus as the Messiah, the Christ. Latin American christology understands the historical Jesus as the totality of the life, mission, preaching, and destiny of Jesus of Nazareth, that is, the history of Jesus. It is thought that among the plurality of elements that compose this history, the most historical element, and the one that most easily permits the understanding of the to-tality of Jesus, is his practice oriented toward the presence of the Kingdom of God, and simultaneously the spirit in which he carried out this practice. Latin American christology recognizes that this same view also appears in the gospels, where the first communities, in the wake of having confessed Jesus as the Christ, again turn to him retelling his history. Sobrino thus affirms that in order to theologize Jesus he has to be historized, and he can be historized only if he is theologized. Consequently, Latin American christology is a narrative evangelical christology: in the retelling of the history of Jesus it finds the decisive element for Jesus: the Kingdom of God. In this sense, Latin American christology is fundamentally an historical relational chris-tology: Jesus can be understood only in relation to the Kingdom of God and to the Father.
