    No full text
Like many who played a role in the processes of independence in Spanish America, José María Cos was polyfacetic and changed face as the situation demanded: priest, intellectual, journalist, polemicist, he transformed himself from an enemy to a supporter of the Hidalgo movement, and from being hostile to the sovereign organization intended by the Council of Zitácuaro to its most outspoken defender. This article analyses the written arguments with which he answered the accusation of the Ecclesiastical Council of the archdiocese of Mexico regarding the alleged abuse of non-existent - or at least doubtful - ecclesiastical faculties for attending the catholic faithful in territories occupied by the insurgents. The principal stance of Cos was the application of the doctrine of “discernment”, i.e., the position that, under ex-traordinary circumstances like war, for instance, any priest - in this case Cos himself - could take upon his own conscience the faculties reserved in Spain to the Military Chaplain General in order to assure a higher good: the right of the faithful to the sacraments.

There are many spiritualities which vary widely among themselves. This ar-ticle starts with a very broad working definition in order to make the term all inclusive. There have to be, however, criteria which enable us to distin-guish between any “true” spirituality and a “false” one. In both cases we will have to take into account the psychodynamic structure of a person in order to be able to determine his or her functionality and thus the functiona-lity of the spirituality he or she professes. As a matter of fact there are aliena-ting spiritualities. The paper explains aspects of psychic development present in any spirituality and stresses the often experienced difficulty of neatly distinguishing between a “spiritual experience” and psychopathology. The importance of the network of unconscious and conscious perceptions in which we are all embedded is emphasized as well as the unavoidable ambi-valence of our perceptions. One important fact is that due to our multiple conditioning all our perceptions are always distorted. This psychodynamic finding questions our concepts of “reality” and “truth”. The novelty of the Christian testimony consists in communion with God experienced in com-munion among ourselves. This testimony is not distorted: it is unconditional forgiveness that enables us to forgive, even within the framework of our multiple personality disorders.

In its beginnings, the task of evangelization in New Spain had to face two fundamental problems: how to establish communication with the natives and a lack of knowledge about the Pre-Hispanic religions. Both problems led the 16th Century missionaries to undertake a comprehensive study of the languages and customs of the natives, a study later reflected in several works. Thus, the linguistic and ethnographic training of the missionaries involved a complete recovery of the indigenous cultural tradition that, as we will see, facilitated the recovery of the huehuetlatolli and its use as essential tool in the evangelization of New Spain.

    No full text
Christian Faith in Latin America”. It presents elements for theological reflection on the basis of Christian faith relevant in the context of globalization. This type of theology requires close attention to subjects, actions, utopias and the concepts that figure in faith experience and daily life. In order to meet the challenges of global society, fundamental theology must be understood and structured as a theory of liberating community practice (TLCP). Only under this condition can fundamental theology again become relevant in the contexts of injustice, exclusion, and violence that are so predominant and challenging in Latin America.

Human languages about God will always be limited to understand His mys-tery. Nonetheless these languages are necessary to make intelligible and audible His revelation. Aware of this tension intrinsic to any language about God, the present article seeks to retrieve the category of pro-existence as a way of being and a way of talking about God. God’s self-revelation and self-donation are the foundation for recognizing the validity of such language. God doesn’t live for Himself, He always lives for others, exists for others. Jesus expe-riences, engages in intimacy with and practices the God of pro-existenciality, the God of the Kingdom. This way of talking about God allows overcoming in Latin America sacrificial readings in which God appears justifying human pain and sorrow.

The present paper develops some of the most significant outlines that can structure, in the case of women, a liberating spiritual life: this endeavor should neither hide nor disfigure the Christian experience of God who, showing the clarity of his face and the tenderness of his heart, recreates, wi-dens and fulfills every woman's being. Furthermore, theoretical and expe-riential reflection on a liberating spirituality stresses the importance of situation and context, that is, it parts from women's experience and intends to answer the question how God becomes an alive and operating reality in their lives. This is a spirituality close to mystical experience: it enables wom-en to enter into themselves, into their inner life where events reverberate as a revelation of the Triune God. Another aspect is that this spirituality is based on the Scripture as the Word of life and resistance and, thus, leads to an en-counter with God as Wisdom. Last but not least, the paper insists on the im-portance of walking in the Life of the Spirit in which discernment in learned, so that women can become widwives in the birth of a new life in Christ for other men and women.
