For assessing the impact of melatonin pre-treatment in summer anestrous Murrah buffaloes on subsequent reproductive activity of a fixed time artificial insemination (FTAI) protocol, 83 anestrous Murrah buffaloes were subcutaneously inserted 2x4 mm size absorbable melatonin (MT) implants (18 mg/50 kg b wt) at the base of left ear and 38 Murrah buffaloes were used as non-implanted controls. On day 35 post-MT, the Treatment and Control group Murrah buffaloes were subjected to FTAI protocol (Ovsynch plus CIDR). Ovarian ultrasonography and jugular vein blood sampling was carried out on day 7 and 10 of protocol and on day 7-post AI. Overall pregnancy rate on day 90 post-AI in MT group was higher compared to Control group (55.4 vs 31.6%, P<0.05), along with the higher (P>0.05) plasma progesterone on day 7 of FTAI protocol in Murrah buffaloes of the former group which conceived subsequently compared to their non-pregnant counterparts. Moreover, MT group had higher (P>0.05) increase in dominant follicle diameter between day 7 and 10 of protocol compared to Control group. On day 7 post-AI, the luteal profile in pregnant Murrah buffaloes of MT group was better (P<0.05) compared to their counterparts in Control group (CL: 14.80±0.70 vs 10.82±0.46 mm, P4: 1.54±0.07 vs 1.04±0.08 ng/ml). In conclusion, melatonin pre-treatment in summer anestrous Murrah buffaloes could be associated with better luteal activity and higher pregnancy rate in the Ovsynch+CIDR protocol

Meconium aspiration pneumonia in Murrah buffalo calves

    Get PDF
Meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS) is caused due to respiratory distress to the fetus during or before parturition. As a result of asphyxia, the fetal gasping causes meconic amniotic fluid entry into the respiratory air passages and pulmonary complications, and sometimes death of the newborn. In the present study, two cases of MAS in Murrah buffalo calves born full term by assisted delivery and died after few hours of delivery were received for routine postmortem examination. Necropsy examination revealed diffuse mosaic-pattern - like lesions in the lungs characterized by dark brown-to-red deflated (atelectatic) lobes and small irregular pale raised multi focal partially inflated tiny areas amidst the atelectatic lobes. The respiratory passages were filled with aspirated substances. Microscopically, bronchoalveloar lumen contained with keratin, squames and subtle meconium along with mild infiltration of neutrophils in the alveolar parenchyma. The MAS in Murrah buffalo calves in the present study was similar in presentation with that reported in human babies due to the MAS. These cases add further information on MAS in the buffaloes to the scanty literature on this condition

    Get PDF
The current investigation was conducted on one hundred and eighty Murrah buffalo male calves from the age of one to thirty months, to investigate the correlation of age with body weight and testicular biometry. Six animals were included in each month. The body weight (b. wt) of the male calves was recorded on the weight bridge balance and the circumference of scrotum was measured by inch tape. The testicular dimensions were measured ultasonographically. Mean body weight from one to thirty month ranged between 57.0±1.99 and 433.0±9.81 kg. It increased 12.52 kg per month. The mean testicular circumference at 1, 12, 18 and 30 months was 9.00±00, 20.25±0.64, 21.42±0.64 and 26.67±0.42 cm, respectively. The overall increase in testicular circumference from one to thirty months was 0.59 cm per month. The mean length of right testes at one month was 2.89±0.15 cm and at eighteenth month was 6.87±0.27 cm. It increased in parallel pattern with b.wt and age. The width of right testes ranged between 1.01±0.05 to 4.53±0.211 cm. The length of left testes from one to eighteen month ranged between 2.73±0.19 to 6.49±0.10 cm with an increase of 0.21 cm per month. Similarly, the mean width of left testes ranged between 1.12±0.02 to 4.61±0.17 cm and significantly increased 0.12 cm/month. The data obtained in the current extensive study may serve as reference values for Murrah buffalo bulls

    Get PDF
The present study was conducted to evaluate two S. aureus vaccines in 100 mastitis free lactating buffaloes, dividing into 2 equal groups (B1, B2). The animals of B1 and B2 were administered with 2 shots of live attenuated and Dextran sulphate adjuvanted S. aureus vaccine at 15 days sequentially. The evaluation was done with different parameters i.e., serum and whey antibody titers, somatic cell count, milk fat %, milk protein, milk yield, vaccine efficacy, cost-benefit analysis, and colony count. There was a peak of geometric mean antibody titer 291 and 58 in LSAV while its climax 363 and 90 in DSAV at 2 and 6 months of study. In whey this level almost remained the same in both groups. In B1 and B2, somatic cell count kept on decreasing from day zero to the end of study. There was a non-significant difference in milk yield and fat percentage between the 2 groups. Milk protein concentration was significantly different between these groups and was better in B1 than B2. The surf field mastitis test-based quarter point prevalence decreased at 180 days in LASV and DSAV. In California mastitis test based, a significant decreased value was shown in both groups. Pre-vaccination and post-vaccination colony count of S. aureus was more in LSAV than in DSAV. Moreover, the preventative efficacy and cost benefit ratio of DSAV was more excellent as compared to LSAV.

    Get PDF
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of photoperiod and other environmental factors on the population of Water buffalo oocytes in Veracruz, Mexico. Oocytes (n=123) were obtained by follicular aspiration and graded according to morphological characteristics. Data regarding regional environmental factors (temperature, humidity, and daylight) were collected from a historic database of a metrological station. Statistical analysis was performed through Person correlation, one-way ANOVA and linear regression analysis, P<0.05 was considered significant. There was a correlation (P<0.05) between oocyte populations (total and viable) with temperature, humidity, and duration of daylight. ITH (index of temperature and humidity) and oocyte viability did not correlate (P>0.05) with other variables. Oocyte populations (total and viable) and environmental variables changed (P<0.05) during all the sampled months. Oocyte populations (total and viable) were affected (P<0.05) by temperature (r=-0.63; r=-0.57), humidity (r=0.46; r=0.39) and daylight (r=-0.86; r=-0.87), no association (P>0.05) with ITH or oocyte viability were identified. In conclusion, temperature, humidity, and daylight affected the oocyte populations (total and viable). Photoperiod seemed to be the most important factor affecting oocyte populations of water buffalos in Veracruz state, Mexico

Microscopic exploration into the behavior of giant cells in placentomes of buffalo (Bubalus bubalis)

    Get PDF
The present study was conducted on placentomes of 31 pregnant buffaloes ranging from 38 to 243 days of gestation to explore the microscopic details of giant cells and their behavior in buffalo placentomes. Various histological and histochemical stains used in the study revealed its structural and chemical details. The study revealed that giant cells played a major role in transplacental transfer of nutrients and other metabolites required by the fetal and maternal tissues. High polysaccharide content and intense enzymatic reaction indicated high metabolic activity of the giant cells in the placenta. The migratory nature of giant cells observed in the present study revealed its role in transfer of metabolites. The cytoplasmic processes observed in the study indicated its fusion with the cryptal epithelium as a medium of transfer of metabolites and formation of multinucleated giant cells. Strong acid phosphates activity can be correlated with its erythrophagocytic nature as a medium of transfer of iron molecules to the developing fetus

The objectives of this research were: (1) to study the level of green supply chain management in the hotel business. (2) to develop the causal model of green supply chain management, supply chain performance, and sustainable supply chain management. and (3) to study the mediation role of sustainable supply chain management on green supply chain management and supply chain performance. The sample of this study was representatives from 220 hotels. Purposive sampling was used. The questionnaire was used as a research tool. Structural equation modeling statistics were used to test hypotheses. The results show that in this study's sample group, the hotel industry, green supply chain management is moderate. The structural equation model was consistent with the empirical data. The causal relationship can be described that green supply chain management has a direct effect on supply chain performance and sustainable supply chain management. Moreover, green supply chain management influences supply chain performance indirectly. Through sustainable supply chain management, it can be stated that sustainable supply chain management plays a significant role as a mediator. As a result, hotel owners should create policies for service design, collaborate with customers and suppliers, manage the environment within the company, and manage capital with greater environmental awareness because these approaches can help to ensure sustainable supply chain management as well as improved supply chain performance.
