„Epopeja jezuitów” w dawnej stolicy wezyrów. Gimnazjum w Trawniku

The article focuses on presenting the history of the Jesuit gymnasium in Travnik in the context of socio-political context. . The traces of this education have been preserved in the memories of Miljenko Jergović and by Emir Kusturica. Their short, proud references to the education of their ancestors who attended the gymnasium in Travnik are just a pretext to indicate the circumstances, goals and tasks of the Jesuits who after the restoration of their order after a few decades of dissolution in 1882 opened a school in Travnik and Sarajevo seminary.W artykule, w kontekscie uwarunkowań społeczno-politycznych, ukazano losy gimanzjum prowadzonego przez Towarzystwo Jezusowe w Trawniku.

The Wallachian settlement on the northern slopes of the Carpathians in the Little Ice Age (15th and 16th century).A significant deterioration of the climate took place in the Carpathians in the period from the 15th to the 19th century. It was a fragment of a global phenomenon referred to by various representatives of geoscience as the Little Ice Age (LIA). Arguments presented in the article were preceded by a preliminary assumption that these events had a particular impact on the living conditions of populations who inhabited the areas situated in the sub-mountain and mountain zones in the 15th and 16th century. Located in this area were the upper levels of various cultivated plants’ ranges, which were particularly crucial for the cultivation of winter cereal crops. Even minor fluctuations of multi-annual average temperatures could significantly increase or decrease them. The results contained in this work were formed on the basis of information from the sources, which are primarily of a fiscal nature and which so far have been underrated by historians of the climate. The analysis of changes taking place in individual settlements was conducted on the other hand by using the methodology applied by historians of human settlement. The outcome of the studies presented below offers a general conclusion on the existence of a widespread phenomenon in the discussed period of an increase in the Carpathian areas of elements from a model of the economic functioning of the village life which was based on stockbreeding. This happened at the expense of restricting or sometimes even eliminating agricultural activities. It was the main reason for which individual landowners fostered or initiated colonization based on the Wallachian law or, at least, on its elements. For this reason, the 16th century in particular became a period of a sudden development of this settlement trend in the Carpathian regions. This had serious consequences not only for the economy. The study draws attention to the fact that the introduction of these changes could take place due to the migration of ethnically foreign people who were acquainted with the secrets of a specialised stockbreeding, which was unavailable to classical farmers. Amongst the newcomers were also ethnic Vlachs. One of the consequences of these migrations was also a considerable increase in the scope of the Orthodoxy at the expense of Catholicism in Lesser Poland.

The purpose of this article is to present the preliminary results of the research on the shepherds\u27 everyday life that I have been conducting since 2015 in the field of history, migration, and cultural heritage of the Vlach minority inhabiting the areas from Albania to the northern Carpathians. One of the research stages entails the studies of the daily life and rituals of the highlanders living in the huts on the Polish side of the Carpathians. The article describes the issues concerning the organization and the time-space symbolism of a modern hut, including their daily life and schedule of activities. The research was conducted in the selected huts of Spiš, Orava, Podhale, Żywiec region, and Silesian Beskids in Poland in 2015-2018. In all cases, I applied qualitative research, mostly structured and unstructured interviews with senior and young shepherds working in the huts, as well as covert and overt participant observations conducted during selected pastoral holidays and meetings in various spaces—in temples, during highlander\u27s and Vlach conventions, in theme meetings, and in the huts. I supplement these techniques with the analysis of the visual sources that I made during the field research, received from the enthusiasts of this topic, or found on the Internet. The research has shown that modern pastoralism oscillates between two poles: the traditional, which has made it possible to retain many elements from the past (cultural heritage), and the modern, thanks to which shepherds introduce global solutions to their huts and traditions. The purpose of this article is to present the preliminary results of the research on the shepherds\u27 everyday life that I have been conducting since 2015 in the field of history, migration, and cultural heritage of the Vlach minority inhabiting the areas from Albania to the northern Carpathians. "A Body Without a Head". The Elite of the Muslim Minority in the Bulgarian Lands at the Turn of the 20th Century

    Get PDF
The Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878 led to the end of the Ottoman rule in the Bulgarian lands, which entailed a huge emigration of the Muslim population. The Ottoman elite was the first who decided to leave. Officials, hodjas, imams, officers, landowners, urban dwellers, and the intelligentsia moved to the Ottoman Empire out of fear of retaliation for having links with the former authorities. Additionally, after the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia in 1885, there was a new migration wave of Muslim officials, local activists, and militia officers from Southern Bulgaria. As a result, in 1879–1949 about 80% of the Muslim population of Bulgaria were small farmers, about 19% lived in cities as craftsmen, and only about 1% had a chance to make a career as entrepreneurs or merchants. The paper will focus on the three elite groups who correspond with the traditional division of the elite: the political (muftis), the economic (landowners, merchants, entrepreneurs), and the intellectuals (teachers – hodjas).Ciało bez głowy”.

Status Wołochów w jedenastowiecznym Bizancjum (wg Rad Kekaumena)

After the conquest of Basil II the Balkan Vlachs communities were under Byzantine rule. The provincial aristocrat Kekaumenos described in his "Book of Advice" the Vlachs of Thessaly, who raised a short-lived rebellion against the Emperor in 1066. The reason for the riots were the attempts to raise taxes and the form of their collection which was met with the opposition of Wallachian leaders, convinced that the attempts threaten the material existence of the community and lead to the loss of the existing rights.
