Making field effect transistor measurements accessible to electrochemists and biologists

    No full text
International audienceField effect transistors (FETs), originally developed in the field of electronic engineering, have gained increasing prominence in biosensing due to their versatile operation characteristics, ranging from recording simple electrical transfer curves to performing chronoamperometric measurements. Commonly known as bioFETs, these devices typically feature low gate voltage operation characteristics, can be made highly selective/sensitive through bioreceptor integration, label-free and do not rely on redox mediators or enzymatic product detection, and are easy to interface with microfluidic or flow cell devices. Despite their advantages, electrochemists and biologists remain still hesitant to explore the possibilities of bioFETs, owing to concerns about investment costs and the complexity of the read-out tools. In this study, we demonstrate the use of a simple, cost-effective bipotentiostat platform, providing an accessible solution for those interested in electronic biosensing without the need to delve into complex electronics. As a proof-of-concept, we showcase the working principle of a graphene-based bioFET for sensing a cardiac biomarker using a peptide nucleic acid (PNA)-aptamer-modified gFET platform. This article focuses on how to easily develop/operate FETs for biosensing measurements using the bipotentiostat-setup and discloses its simplicity over the conventional approaches

    No full text
International audienceThis study explores the relationship between food choices and socioeconomic precarity. A sample of 120 participants from the general population completed a questionnaire assessing precarity (EPICES scale, Mayer, 2018), food choices (Food Choices Values, Lyerly et al., 2015), food literacy (Begley et al., 2018), and social representations of food (Abric, 2001).Linear regression analyses indicate that precarity increases the importance of accessibility (both physical and financial), convenience (ease of preparation), and emotional comfort in food choices.First, we examined whether this effect could be explained by food literacy. No direct association was found between precarity and overall food literacy levels. However, specific skills—particularly planning (e.g., grocery list, meal organization) and food selection (e.g., consideration of nutritional labels)—positively influence health-oriented food choices. Planning behaviors are linked to a preference for nutrient- and vitamin-rich foods as well as organic products. Additionally, selection skills enhance the value placed on food safety, health, and weight management in food choices.Second, we analyzed the role of social representations of food. Our results indicate differences based on precarity. Regarding “healthy eating,” people in precarious situations associate it with more abstract concepts (e.g., origin, locality), whereas non-precarious individuals refer to more concrete elements (e.g., fiber, salads, unprocessed foods). Regarding “unhealthy eating,” precarious individuals primarily link it to physical consequences (e.g., obesity) and food safety issues (e.g., poor quality, low safety), while non-precarious individuals associate it with mental health concerns. The analysis of the valence of social representations shows a general consensus on the positive perception of healthy eating. However, precariousness is associated with a more favorable evaluation of unhealthy eating, despite its connection to negative physical consequences and lower food safety. Furthermore, a more positive perception of unhealthy eating is correlated with an increased preference for food choices based on emotional comfort. Thus, our findings suggest that socioeconomic precarity influences food choices toward convenience, accessibility, and emotional comfort, and that this effect may be partially explained by differences in social representations of food. These representations appear to be a relevant factor to consider both in research and field interventions. Finally, although food literacy is not directly associated with precarity, it remains a valuable tool for psychosocial interventions aimed at promoting healthier food choices.

    No full text

Development of a Novel Self-locking-at-rest Piezoelectric Inchworm Motor with High Switching Frequency Driving Ability

    No full text
International audienceIn this paper, a novel piezoelectric actuator-based inchworm motor and its driving mechanism has been proposed for high speed linear application. Three high voltage positive square pulses with appropriate phase sequence amongst them have been applied to the two clamps and one extender of IM to achieve the desired linear translation. Isolated mosfet-based switching and oscillation circuits have been designed to operate the motor at high switching frequencies by dynamically reducing the capacitive reactance of the piezoelectric stack actuators. Consequently, experiments on the characterization of the piezo-actuators have been performed to identify the pre stress on the motor rail. Geometric model of the system has been developed using finite element analysis to determine displacement distribution in Clamping Mechanism and Extending Mechanism before physically fabricating the motor prototype to verify the driving mechanism. Performance evaluation has been carried out under varying duty cycles, switching frequencies and loads. The motor is observed to achieve a maximum no load speed of 60 mm/s under the 80-90 volt positive square pulse at a frequency of 3 kHz with a 20% duty cycle. A relatively high electrical driver efficiency of 42% is experimentally achieved which makes the proposed mechatronic system highly suitable for low-size, high torque industrial applications

Thermoelastic properties of polycrystalline strontium titanium silicate Sr₂TiSi₂O₈ synthesized via the reactive sintering method

    No full text
International audienceThe aim of the work presented in this paper is to investigate the thermoelastic properties of polycrystalline Sr-fresnoite Sr2TiSi2O8 (STS). On that purpose, Sr2TiSi2O8 samples were synthesized by solid state reactive sintering from SrCO3, TiO2 and SiO2 powders. The thermal expansion behaviour of the so-obtained material was characterized at the microscale by using High Temperature X-Ray Diffraction (HT – XRD) to follow the changes in the unit cell parameters of STS. The results were correlated to the macroscopic expansion behaviour characterized by dilatometry, and to the evolution of the Young’s modulus with temperature measured by the impulse excitation technique (IET). It is evidenced that STS presents a commensurate-to-incommensurate phase transformation characterized by thermal hysteresis and leading to a minimum peak in CTE at 200 °C during the heating and at 150 °C during the cooling. From 300 °C to 900 °C, the thermal expansion exhibits an almost linear behaviour with an average CTE of . Between 900°C and 1000 °C, a maximum peak in CTE, also characterized by thermal hysteresis, is observed and seems to be attributed to a reverse transformation to a commensurate phase. The value of Young’s modulus E is 105 ± 0.5 GPa at room temperature. The commensurate-to-incommensurate phase transformation also affects the Young’s modulus by inducing a weak minimum peak at the same temperatures as those observed for the CTE. At higher temperature, the Young’s modulus remains stable up to 500 °C and slowly decreases over this temperature. It remains equal to 96 ± 0.5 GPa at 950 °C

    No full text
This thesis presents a comprehensive review of the author's contributions to the field of heuristic optimization, with a particular emphasis on the paradigms of change and simplicity. The concept of change, a cornerstone of Heraclitus' philosophy, has been a fundamental principle in the development of metaheuristics, particularly Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS). While VNS has proven to be a powerful tool, the trend towards increasingly complex hybrid heuristics has often obscured the potential of simpler approaches. To counter this trend, the author has advocated for a "less-is-more" methodology (LIMA), which prioritizes simplicity and effectiveness. By applying this principle, the author and collaborators have developed a range of simple yet powerful heuristic algorithms. The thesis delves into the successful applications of VNS and LIMA in solving various optimization problems. It highlights the effectiveness of basic VNS and more advanced variants like General VNS and Skewed General VNS. Each application is discussed in detail, covering problem definition, solution approach, results, and contributions to the literature. Finally, the thesis explores potential future research directions. It emphasizes the need for further exploration of optimization under uncertainty, parallelization techniques, matheuristics, decomposition approaches, and machine learning-based heuristics. While the author has already made significant strides in these areas, there remains ample opportunity for further innovation and advancement.
