Enhancement of heat transfer using Faraday instability

    No full text
International audienceThis study explores the Faraday instability as a mechanism to enhance heat transfer in two-phase systems by exciting interfacial waves through resonance. The approach is particularly applicable to reduced-gravity environments where buoyancy-driven convection is ineffective. A reduced-order model, based on a weighted residual integral boundary layer method, is used to predict interfacial dynamics and heat flux under vertical oscillations with a stabilising thermal gradient. The model employs long-wave and one-way coupling approximations to simplify the governing equations. Linear stability theory informs the oscillation parameters for subsequent nonlinear simulations, which are then qualitatively compared against experiments conducted under Earth’s gravity. Experimental results show up to a 4.5-fold enhancement in heat transfer over pure conduction. Key findings include: (i) reduced gravity lowers interfacial stability, promoting mixing and heat transfer; and (ii) oscillation-induced instability significantly improves heat transport under Earth’s gravity. Theoretical predictions qualitatively validate experimental trends in wavelength-dependent enhancement of heat transfer. Quantitative discrepancies between model and experiment are rationalised by model assumptions, such as neglecting higher-order inertial terms, idealised boundary conditions, and simplified interface dynamics. These limitations lead to underprediction of interface deflection and heat flux. Nevertheless, the study underscores the value of Faraday instability as a means to boost heat transfer in reduced gravity, with implications for thermal management in space applications

Franz Smola: Robin Christian Andersen.

    No full text

    No full text
International audienceBackground: Artificial Intelligence is transforming medical imaging, particularly in the analysis of bone metastases (BM), a serious complication of advanced cancers. Machine learning and deep learning techniques offer new opportunities to improve detection, recognition, and segmentation of bone metastasis. Yet, challenges such as limited data, interpretability, and clinical validation remain. Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, we reviewed artificial intelligence methods and applications for bone metastasis analysis across major imaging modalities including CT, MRI, PET, SPECT, and bone scintigraphy. The survey includes traditional machine learning models and modern deep learning architectures such as CNNs and transformers. We also examined available datasets and their effect in developing artificial intelligence in this field. Results: Artificial intelligence models have achieved strong performance across tasks and modalities, with Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Transformer architectures showing particularly efficient performance across different tasks. However, limitations persist, including data imbalance, overfitting risks, and the need for greater transparency. Clinical translation is also challenged by regulatory and validation hurdles. Conclusion: Artificial intelligence holds strong potential to improve BM diagnosis and streamline radiology workflows. To reach clinical maturity, future work must address data diversity, model explainability, and large-scale validation, which are critical steps for being trusted to be integrated into the oncology care routines

International audienceWe present large-signal load-pull measurements of a transferred InP/GaAsSb double heterojunction bipolar transistor fabricated on a high-resistivity silicon substrate. The tested devices feature an emitter area of 0.44 × 3.9 µm². When biased for highest power, an output power of 13.42 dBm was achieved corresponding to a power density of 12.92 mW/µm² (5.68 W/mm). A peak value of 23.7 % was obtained along with a power gain of 5.35 dB when the load impedance was optimized for maximum power-added efficiency (P.A.E). These results highlight the benefits of thermal dissipation improvement in overcoming self-heating effects to achieve high output power.</div

    No full text
International audienceWhat are the theoretical foundations and methodological orientations of journalism epistemology? This article addresses this question through a theoretical and analytical approach, tracing the origins and dynamics of journalism epistemology in both Francophone and Anglophone academic traditions. Its objective is to explore the similarities, divergences, and possible points of convergence between these two often siloed scholarly fields. Epistemology of journalism — conceived as a critical reflection on the nature, legitimacy, and processes of knowledge production — rests on a core assumption: journalism generates knowledge that, as it circulates through society, shapes collective representations and structures public discourse. At the heart of this reflection lies the examination of how such knowledge is constructed and legitimized. Foundational contributions to this field are situated within their respective disciplinary contexts. On the one hand, Anglophone research, rooted in the legacy of Robert Park, has generally embraced a sociological perspective centered on journalistic practices and their socio-institutional dimensions. On the other hand, Francophone scholarship—initially reluctant to view journalism as a legitimate form of knowledge—has tended toward a more philosophical, conceptual, and normative line of inquiry. The work of Gilles Gauthier and Bertrand Labasse exemplifies this approach, particularly through their analyses of central concepts such as truth, objectivity, and reality. Their contributions are examined in dialogue with Anglophone scholarship in an effort to transcend disciplinary boundaries. By offering a critical and dialogic overview, this article does not seek to redefine journalism epistemology, but rather to reopen essential lines of questioning and highlight the continued relevance of this field in addressing contemporary challenges—especially in the context of ongoing digital transformations.¿Cuáles son los fundamentos teóricos y las orientaciones metodológicas de la epistemología del periodismo?

    No full text
Barium-based functional thin films, particularly barium titanate (BTO) and barium strontium titanate (BST), are well known for their strong electro-optic (EO) properties and voltage-dependent permittivity. While their performance has been widely explored in the optical and microwave regions, their behavior and tunability in the terahertz (THz) range remain underexplored. This region offers great potential for next-generation communication, sensing, and imaging technologies. To overcome the limitations of natural materials and enable effective control and reconfigurable THz systems, metamaterials and metasurfaces are promising candidates for controlling and manipulating THz waves with their unique and versatile capabilities derived from their artificial structures. This thesis investigates the EO response and THz dielectric tunability of BTO and BST thin films deposited via high-temperature sputtering. First, a tetragonal epitaxial BTO film was grown, and birefringence measurements using a modified Sénarmont method revealed a predominantly quadratic and asymmetric EO behavior in response to an applied DC electric field. High-quality 450 nm-thick BST films with different Ba/Sr compositions were then fabricated and characterized. The Ba₀.₆Sr₀.₄TiO₃ BST(60) film showed the best performance, with a FWHM of 0.57° (HR-XRD) and a dielectric constant of 140 at 0.2 THz. EO and birefringence responses were found to be highly dependent on the substrate type and the film thickness. THz tunability measurements using interdigitated electrodes (IDE) showed high electrical tunability in BST(60) up to 15%. Moreover, IDEs with varying gap sizes were patterned to explore the impact of electrode design and the 100 µm gap shows the optimal THz response. A metasurface using BST(60) thin film as the active material working in reflection mode has been designed using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation, and the fabricated metadevice experimentally demonstrated resonance shifts of up to 5.5 GHz under applied voltage, an approach not yet widely reported. These findings highlight the potential of BST for future electrically tunable THz device applications.

Error Bounds for a Kernel-Based Constrained Optimal Smoothing Approximation

    No full text
This paper establishes error bounds for the convergence of a piecewise linear approximation of the constrained optimal smoothing problem posed in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS). This problem can be reformulated as a Bayesian estimation problem involving a Gaussian process related to the kernel of the RKHS. Consequently, error bounds can be interpreted as a quantification of the maximum a posteriori (MAP) accuracy. To our knowledge, no error bounds have been proposed for this type of problem so far. The convergence results are provided as a function of the grid size, the regularity of the kernel, and the distance from the kernel interpolant of the approximation to the set of constraints. Inspired by the MaxMod algorithm from recent literature, which sequentially allocates knots for the piecewise linear approximation, we conduct our analysis for non-equispaced knots. These knots are even allowed to be non-dense, which impacts the definition of the optimal smoothing solution and our error bound quantifiers. Finally, we illustrate our theorems through several numerical experiments involving constraints such as boundedness and monotonicity
