    Get PDF

Multidimensional analysis of sedentary behaviour and participation in Spanish stroke survivors (Part&Sed-Stroke): a protocol for a longitudinal multicentre study

    Get PDF
Introduction Stroke survivors usually experience long-lasting functional, emotional and social consequences that might contribute to sedentary behaviour and participation restrictions, which are important targets to address during rehabilitation. However, the trajectory and inter-relationship between these factors are unknown. Methods and analysis Part&Sed is a research project based on an observational study design with 6 and 12 months of follow-ups in stroke survivors. In addition, a qualitative analysis of the impact of the stroke on the stroke survivor, validation of the Satisfaction with Daily Occupation-Occupational Balance assessment tool and analysis of the reliability of the Fitbit Inspire 2 activity tracker wristband will be carried out. Participants will be chronic stroke survivors with independent walking capacity. Sociodemographic and clinical data, physical activity, ambulation, sleep, quality of life, anxiety and depression, community participation, and occupational satisfaction and balance, as well as data provided by the activity tracker wristband, will be collected. In addition, if the participant has a primary caregiver, the caregiver will also be monitored. A minimum of 130 participants will be recruited to conduct a random-effects multiple regression model. Mixed models for repeated measures will assess the variation over time of the different variables associated with participation and sedentary behaviour. Psychometric properties (eg, internal consistency, construct validity, test–retest reliability) of the Satisfaction with Daily Occupation-Occupational Balance will be determined. Additionally, intraclass correlation coefficients and minimum detectable change will be calculated to assess intrasubject reliability of physical activity and sleep parameters recorded by the Fitbit Inspire 2. The qualitative analysis process will be carried out using the analysis proposed by Giorgi. Ethics and dissemination The study received ethical approval from the Spanish Regional Ethics Committee ‘Comité de Ética de la Investigación de la Comunidad de Aragón’ (PI21/333). The results will be made available via peer-reviewed publications, international conferences and official channels. This work was supported by Ayudas a Proyectos Internos de Investigacion Universidad San Jorge curso 2021-2022' (grant number: 2122037) and Ayudas a Proyectos Internos de Investigacion Universidad San Jorge curso 2022-2023' (grant number: 2122037). League of Legends (LoL) is one of the most played MOBAS (multiplayer online battle arena) in the world. One of their game modes is competitive ranked play, where players with similar skill level face each other controlling characters called champions. In this paper I present a study of how the public data from these champions can be used to create a dataset and prepare it to create machine learning models that are able to predict the winning team of a game taking into account the composition (the champions that form a team) of each team.

Comparing Object Oriented and Data Oriented Programming for video games

    No full text
Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) and Data-Oriented Programming (DOP) are two prominent design paradigms widely used in software development, including video game development. This research aims to compare these paradigms specifically in the context of the video game environment. OOP focuses on modeling systems as a collection of interacting objects, encapsulating data and behavior within classes. It promotes modularity, code reusability, and maintainability, making it suitable for various aspects of game development. In video games, OOP facilitates the creation of game entities such as characters, items, and environments and supports features like inheritance and polymorphism to manage complexity and enable efficient game object interactions. DOP, on the other hand, emphasizes organizing and optimizing data for efficient processing. It seeks to maximize data locality, minimize cache misses, and exploit parallelism for performance gains. DOP techniques are particularly beneficial in in-game scenarios where data-oriented optimizations such as physics simulations, AI processing, and rendering can significantly improve performance. Through this comparative analysis, the research aims to provide insights into the trade-offs and suitability of OOP and DOP in different aspects of video game development. By understanding their relative merits, developers can make informed decisions regarding the choice of design paradigm based on the specific requirements and constraints of their game projects. This study focuses on a case study representing a characteristic idiosyncrasy of a video game to conduct comparisons by developing a prototype video game using both OOP and DOP approaches. The results show that projects, where performance is essential, can benefit significantly from DOD, while it does not impact small or medium-sized projects as much. The current literature and educational offer are more oriented toward OOD training than DOD. Therefore, the mass adoption of DOD by the community will depend on whether said balance changes due to its successful use in industrial products and research works, along with which this research tries to contribute

Non-City. Utopian irruptions in the film imaginary of the counterculture

    No full text
The late 1960s saw a metamorphosis in urban utopias that reflected the exhaustion of technological optimism and the emergence of a new ecological consciousness. This transition was reflected in numerous counterculture-driven film productions that chronicled the reconfiguration and disappearance of the city in the cinematic scene. This article explores this process of transformation of filmic narratives, establishing a sequence that initially encompasses the political and playful condition of urban space, its reprogramming, its abandonment and, finally, the search for other territories, giving way to a succession of Edenic utopias that led to other ways of inhabiting. In this reinterpretation of filmic iconology, a new imagery of emptiness emerges, illustrated by the desert and virgin territories, which constituted alternative scenarios for the utopias of the counterculture.

Cross‐cultural translation and adaptation of the Danish version of the brief version of the 10‐item Big Five Inventory

Background: Personality traits are associated with pain‐related beliefs and coping strategies, and different chronic conditions are linked through specific personality profiles. This highlights the importance of having valid and reliable measures of personality traits for use in clinical and research settings when assessing patients in chronic pain. Purpose: To translate and cross‐culturally adapt the 10‐item Big Five Inventory (BFI‐10) into Danish. Methods: A bilingual expert panel (N = 4) and a panel of laymen (N = 8) translated and culturally adapted the questionnaire into Danish. Face validity was evaluated in a group of persons suffering from recurring or ongoing painful conditions (N = 9). Data were collected to evaluate the internal consistency, test–retest reliability and factor structure (N = 96).Results: Some of the participants in the lay panel considered the questionnaire too short, considering its aim of assessing personality. Acceptable internal consistency was found for two out of five subscales (0.78 for both Extraversion and Neuroticism), while the internal consistency was non‐acceptable for the remaining subscales (0.17–0.45). Test–retest reliability was acceptable for three subscales (0.80 for Neuroticism, 0.84 for Conscientiousness, and 0.85 for Extraversion). Assumptions for determining the factor structure were not met and therefore was this analysis omitted.Discussion: Although face valid, only two out of five subscales had acceptable internal consistency and only three subscales had acceptable test–retest reliability. These findings indicate that interpreting findings regarding personality using the Danish BFI‐10 should be done with caution

Assessing the Ecotoxicity of Eight Widely Used Antibiotics on River Microbial Communities

Global prevalence of antibiotic residues (ABX) in rivers requires ecotoxicological impact assessment. River microbial communities serve as effective bioindicators for this purpose. We quantified the effects of eight commonly used ABXs on a freshwater river microbial community using Biolog EcoPlates™, enabling the assessment of growth and physiological profile changes. Microbial community characterization involved 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The river community structure was representative of aquatic ecosystems, with the prevalence of Cyanobacteria, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes. Our findings reveal that all ABXs at 100 g/mL reduced microbial community growth and metabolic capacity, particularly for polymers, carbohydrates, carboxylic and ketonic acids. hloramphenicol, erythromycin, and gentamicin exhibited the highest toxicity, with chloramphenicol notably impairing the metabolism of all studied metabolite groups. At lower concentrations (1 g/mL), some ABXs slightly enhanced growth and the capacity to metabolize substrates, such as carbohydrates, carboxylic, and ketonic acids, and amines, except for amoxicillin, which decreased the metabolic capacity across all metabolites. We explored potential correlations between physicochemical parameters and drug mechanisms to understand drug bioavailability. Acute toxicity effects at the river-detected low concentrations (ng/L) are unlikely. However, they may disrupt microbial communities in aquatic ecosystems. The utilization of a wide array of genetically characterized microbial communities, as opposed to a single species, enables a better understanding of the impact of ABXs on complex river ecosystems. This research was funded by Cátedra NOVALTIA and Universidad San Jorge

Synergistic Activity of Thymol with Commercial Antibiotics against Critical and High WHO Priority Pathogenic Bacteria

    No full text
The use of synergistic combinations between natural compounds and commercial antibiotics may be a good strategy to fight against microbial resistance, with fewer side effects on human, animal and environmental, health. The antimicrobial capacity of four compounds of plant origin (thymol and gallic, salicylic and gentisic acids) was analysed against 14 pathogenic bacteria. Thymol showed the best antimicrobial activity, with MICs ranging from 125 g/mL (for Acinetobacter baumannii, Pasteurella aerogenes, and Salmonella typhimurium) to 250 g/mL (for Bacillus subtilis, Klebsiella aerogenes, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Serratia marcescens, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus agalactiae). Combinations of thymol with eight widely used antibiotics were studied to identify combinations with synergistic effects. Thymol showed synergistic activity with chloramphenicol against A. baumannii (critical priority by the WHO), with streptomycin and gentamicin against Staphylococcus aureus (high priority by the WHO), and with streptomycin against Streptococcus agalactiae, decreasing the MICs of these antibiotics by 75% to 87.5%. The kinetics of these synergies indicated that thymol alone at the synergy concentration had almost no effect on the maximum achievable population density and very little effect on the growth rate. However, in combination with antibiotics at the same concentration, it completely inhibited growth, confirming its role in facilitating the action of the antibiotic. The time–kill curves indicated that all the combinations with synergistic effects were mainly bactericidal. This research was funded by Catedra Novaltia, Universidad San Jorge and Foundation Sabadell
