Assessment of the Relationship Between Physical Performance and Percentage Change-of-Direction Deficit in Highly Trained Female Football Players
Purpose: Different studies indicate that female players in team sports such as soccer tend to have a lower change-of-direction (COD) deficit (CODD) than their male counterparts and that players who performed better in linear and curved sprints tended to have a worse CODD, suggesting that maximum speed does not equate to a faster COD. This study assessed how performance variables related to speed and jumping influence the variability of %CODD among adult highly trained female soccer players. Methods: Fifty-two highly trained female soccer players (age 23.1 [3.25] y; height 163.6 [5.49] cm; weight 59.7 [5.71] kg) participated in this study and performed 180COD, 40-m sprint, countermovement jump, and standing broad jump tests. Results: Significant correlations were found between 180CODL, %CODDR, %CODDL, and between-limbs standing broad jump asymmetry (r = .28–.74). A very large correlation existed between %CODDR and %CODDL (r = .91). Regression analyses indicated a strong inverse relationship between the 10-m sprint time and %CODDR and %CODDL. No predictive models were found for 180COD in either limb. Differences in performance variables such as 180CODR, 180CODL, and asymmetry %CODD were significant between the high- and low-%CODD groups, with moderate to large effect sizes. Conclusion: The present study suggests that specific physical-performance variables, particularly acceleration and unilateral horizontal jumping, are vital to improving COD in highly trained female soccer players, highlighting the need for specific training interventions.
Medical interpreting: training the professionals
Medical Interpreting: Training the Professionals presents the results of the project Research & Action and Training in Medical Interpreting (ReACTMe) funded by the European Commission, which analysed the interpreting services offered in healthcare settings in Spain, Italy and
Romania. This edited collection provides the reader not only with an update on the current situation regarding medical interpreting from different perspectives (decision makers, trainers, professional interpreters, healthcare providers and patients) but also with training resources and a proposal for an academic programme to teach medical interpreters. It is therefore ideal reading for medical interpreting trainers, researchers and practitioners. The book is also of interest to healthcare professionals as it includes a decalogue on how to work with interpreters

Recovery of spatio-temporal gait and functional parameters following unilateral eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage in the hamstrings
Objectives
This study aimed to analyze how spatiotemporal gait parameters, active knee extension range of motion, muscle activity, and self-perceived function change over a seven-day period in healthy individuals after exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) in the hamstrings.
Design
Longitudinal cohort study.
Methods
Twenty-four healthy males participated in four sessions before and after EIMD (pre-EIMD, 48 h, 96 h, and 168 h post-EIMD). A single-leg deadlift exercise was performed to provoke EIMD in the hamstrings of the dominant leg. Lower limb function perception, spatiotemporal gait parameters, active knee extension range of motion, and electromyographic (EMG) activity of the semitendinosus and biceps femoris muscles during gait and maximal isometric contraction were assessed bilaterally.
Results
At 48 h, the EIMD-side showed reduced step length, active knee extension range of motion, maximal strength and EMG activity compared to baseline (P < 0.042), while increased relative EMG activity in the biceps femoris during gait (P = 0.001). At 96 h, step length and EMG activity on the EIMD-side reached similar values to those at baseline, whereas lower limb function perception and active knee extension range of motion returned to baseline state at 168 h post-EIMD. No changes over time were observed on the control-side.
Conclusions
Recovery from EIMD requires a multimodal assessment since the different parameters affected by EIMD recover at different paces. Active range of motion appears to be the last variable to fully recover. Self-perceived function should not be considered in isolation as it does not represent complete functional recovery
Language brokering in healthcare settings in spain: an insight based on testimonies
There were 6,491,502 foreign residents living in Spain in January 2024, a number that indicates a significant increase since the beginning of the 21st century. Among this foreign population, the largest communities are Moroccans, Romanians and British, whose mother tongue is not Spanish. According to the results from several studies conducted over the last decades, when these allophone residents use the Spanish healthcare services, they frequently ask their children to help them communicate with healthcare providers through linguistic and cultural mediation, even when professional interpreting or mediation services are available. How did these children feel while mediating for their parents in this context? Did they have any negative experiences? We intend to provide answers to these questions through semi-structured individual interviews with adults who had mediated for their parents in healthcare settings in Spain when they were children or young adults. These answers contribute to a clear understanding of the consequences of language brokering, thus promoting the use of professional interpreting and mediation services in these setting
Rationality, Virtue and Practical Wisdom in Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics
The purpose of the paper is to study the interrelatedness of rationality, virtue, and practical wisdom in Aristotle’s Nicomachean
Ethics by offering a critical interpretation of the bipartition of the soul presented in Chap. 13 of the first book.
Aristotle relies on the partition of the soul into a rational and a non-rational part when he distinguishes between ethical
and intellectual virtues. The paper will question the adequacy of these divisions and show that Aristotle himself casts doubt
on them while leaving open the possibility of understanding the soul in an alternative way which will prove to fit better
with his own exposition of deliberate choice and the integration of virtuous action and practical wisdom.Open Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature
Debating on the Rights of Crime Victims: A Legisprudential Examination of the Parliamentary Deliberation on the Spanish Victim Protection Act (versión manuscrito)
This paper pursues a legisprudential analysis of the justificatory value and the rationality of the arguments used in the parliamentary process that led to the approval of the Act on crime victim protection (Law 4/2015). This legislative scenario proves interesting, on the one hand, because the recognition of the rights of victims seems at first glance to be a non-controversial topic; on the other hand, because the Spanish legislature had to implement a European framework directive that limited its leeway to regulate the underlying issues. After a brief victimological contextualisation of what has been labelled return of the to criminal policies (with a focus on the Spanish case), we analyse the rationality of the arguments used during deliberations and discuss to what extent these legislative debates were actually as conciliatory and consensus-oriented as some MPs rhetorically claimed in their parliamentary speeches.
In this regard, special attention is paid to extremely contentious provisions such as Article 13, which regulates the participation of victims in the execution of criminal sentences, as well as to those parliamentary arguments that reveal political or ideological conflicts and opposing policy models in the field of crime victim protection
Exploring patients and caregivers needs and experiences in oncological physiotherapy: a call for collaborative care
This study investigates whether the full potential of physiotherapy is being utilized for cancer patients and their caregivers at all stages of the oncological process, aiming to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement. Through the World Café co-design methodology, cancer survivors and caregivers engaged in discussions that provided diverse perspectives on the role of physiotherapy in oncology. The study found that there are significant gaps in both systematic referrals to physiotherapists and their integration into care teams. Key findings underscore the need for more humanized healthcare, with an emphasis on effective communication and empathy from healthcare professionals. The lack of awareness about the full potential of physiotherapy in oncology was identified as a major barrier to access, along with a demand for the recognition of specialized oncological physiotherapists. The study suggests that future efforts should focus on increasing the visibility of physiotherapy in oncology, integrating specialized physiotherapists into care teams, and enhancing the emotional education of healthcare professionals to provide more compassionate care
In the videogames field, the Non Playable Characters (NPCs) are characters that takes part of the game but they could not be controlled by the player. Their evolution is a relevant fact in the search of the improvement of the game immersion in the generated virtual environments. The NPCs evolution is directly related to the technology evolution that occurs the last decades.
The main objective is the study and the implementation of an environment able to take advantage of the technology benefits, taking in mind the goal to be as near as possible of the perfect NPC ideal. That means, the creation of the more realistic and natural avatar. To make it, this non playable characters will have emotions when they develop any action in game.
Various fields that are part of the video games concept are involved in the same project. The fact makes the scrumban methodology the best one to follow in the project development for its flexibility and visibility. This methodology is the result of the merger of two agile methodologies, scrum and Kanban, unifying the strengths of both methodologies into one. Despite this, it has had to be adapted to the characteristics of the TFG.
Following the development of the project, metahumans technology has been used in the creation of NPCs for their implementation in a virtual environment whose behaviour is marked by the use of artificial intelligence. The realization of this project has allowed a more detailed understanding of the development ecosystem of these avatars in Unreal Engine, as well as the possibilities and limitations that are provided in this field given by current technology
This article presents the development and implementation of a method for organizing collaborative work in engineering courses. The method aims to maximize participation and learning in group activities by leveraging the individual strengths of each team member. Four behavioral roles - leader, collaborator, reflective, and creative - are defined and assigned to each student through a straightforward questionnaire consisting of 40 questions, utilizing Microsoft Forms. Differences in the predominant role percentages have been observed based on the course and educational level where this methodology is applied. More technically oriented programs tend to have a higher proportion of leaders, while as students’ progress in their studies, the proportions tend to equalize. Notably, this methodology has received positive feedback from students and has yielded superior academic outcomes compared to previous group activities with randomly formed groups.
