    Quantifying Trunk Impact Dynamics and Workload with Inertial Sensors in Goalball Players

    The aim of this study was to quantify trunk impact dynamics in goalball players using inertial sensors and evaluate the goalball players’ workloads, focusing on changes between the first and second halves of a match to enhance understanding of the demands experienced throughout the game. Utilizing inertial technology, trunk impacts during goalball gameplay were analyzed to provide a holistic insight into how these impacts influence athletes’ dynamic stress loads, which refers to the physical demands placed on the body during dynamic movements. Six goalball players were recruited to wear an accelerometer during a whole goalball game to quantify trunk impacts. The results showed a higher number of total impacts and a higher number of impacts at higher levels during the first half, compared to a higher percentage of impacts at a low impact level in the second half. These results suggest that the intensity of gameplay is related to the number of impacts sustained, with players experiencing significantly more impacts, particularly at very low, low, and very high impact levels, in the first half compared to the second half. This decline in impacts aligns with the reduction in game intensity as the match progressed, as indicated by a lower heart rate and a trend towards a lower dynamic stress load in the second half. Future research could explore targeted training interventions aimed at optimizing workload and performance in goalball players

    Introducción: En la década de los setenta, consolidadas las vanguardias arquitectónicas del siglo XX, teóricos como Fernando Chueca manifestaban la necesidad de afianzar un lenguaje arquitectónico que contribuyese al ancestral, pero vigente, promulgado en las edades clásicas. Advirtiendo esa armonía de la arquitectura con el lenguaje que Charles Jencks asociaba a la corriente posmoderna, esta investigación propone una revisión de diversos principios eminentemente gráficos que contribuyen a la praxis del proyecto ponderando el dialecto arquitectónico que formulan. Metodología: Se plantea un análisis de la sintaxis y la semántica, transcritas en morfología y relato, que deparan a la secuencia proyectual arquitectónica variables creativas como la forma y el espacio, así como —unificadas— la luz y su consecuencia, el color. Resultados: Una sistemática cuya repercusión brinda a la experiencia del usuario los patrones lineales y tecnológicos de Foster, los monumentales espacios verticales que erige Piano o las sensaciones cromáticas de la obra de Ito. Discusión: La propia, de carácter procedimental, que entablan las citadas variables con el paradigma arquitectónico que intervienen.     Abordajes de fisioterapia en pacientes con rizartrosis: una revisión bibliográfica

    Work’s justification or background: Arthrosis is a degenerative and progressive disease that involves joints and that affects more than 300 million people around the world. When it involves the trapeziometacarpal joint, we talk about rhizarthrosis, and it affects to 22% of the population over 50 years. Despite the pain, the disability and the socioeconomic burden that it causes, this pathology doesn’t have a cure and it is usually treated with pharmacological or surgical treatments, with the adverse effects that they imply. There is evidence that a conservative treatment based on education and strength, mobility and stability exercises is effective to decrease the impact of this disease. In addition, in the last years evidence of proprioception training having positive results has been found. Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of physiotherapy approaches for the treatment of basal thumb arthrosis regarding decreasing pain as well as to check the effectiveness regarding an improvement on functional capacity and increasing grip and pinch strength. Methods: Randomized controlled trials were searched with a maximum age of five years in the following databases: PUBMED, WOS and PEDro. The studies had to be formed by patients over 50 years and a diagnosis of basal thumb arthrosis and at least one of the groups had to receive an intervention based on a physiotherapy approach. They had to include information about pain, function or pinch or grip strength. PEDro scale was used to assess the methodological quality of the studies included in the review. Results: 87 articles were found and four of them were finally included in the review. All of them evaluated pain and function but only two of them evaluated the secondary outcomes related to pinch and grip strength. All studies found improvements in their outcomes for both the control and the experimental group, although in some cases these improvements didn’t remain stable in the control group after the follow-up period. Conclusion: Physiotherapy approaches have demonstrated decreasing pain, improving functionality and increasing grip and pinch strength in patients with basal thumb arthrosis.Justificación del trabajo o antecedentes: La artrosis es una patología degenerativa y progresiva que afecta a las articulaciones y que padecen más de 300 millones de personas en el mundo. Cuando afecta a la articulación trapeciometacarpiana hablamos de rizartrosis y afecta a un 22% de la población por encima de 50 años. A pesar del dolor, la discapacidad y el coste socioeconómico que provoca es una patología sin cura que suele ir asociada a tratamientos farmacológicos o quirúrgicos, con los efectos secundarios que conllevan. Hay evidencia de que un tratamiento conservador basado en educación, ejercicios de fortalecimiento, movilidad y estabilidad es eficaz para disminuir el impacto de esta patología. Además, en los últimos años se ha encontrado evidencia de que entrenar propiocepción también tiene resultados positivos. Objetivos: Evaluar la eficacia de diferentes abordajes de fisioterapia en el tratamiento de la rizartrosis en cuanto a disminuir el dolor, además de ver su eficacia en cuanto a mejorar la capacidad funcional y aumentar la fuerza tanto de la pinza como del agarre. Métodos: Se buscaron ensayos controlados aleatorizados con una antigüedad máxima de cinco años en PUBMED, WOS y PEDro. Los estudios debían tener como muestra a pacientes mayores de 50 años con un diagnóstico de rizartrosis y que al menos en uno de los grupos recibieran una intervención basada en un abordaje de fisioterapia. También tenían que incluir información acerca del dolor, la función o la fuerza de la pinza o del agarre. Se utilizó la escala PEDro para evaluar la calidad metodológica de los artículos incluidos en la revisión. Resultados: 87 artículos fueron encontrados y 4 fueron finalmente incluidos en la revisión. Todos los artículos evaluaban dolor y función, pero solo dos evaluaban las variables secundarias de fuerza de pinza y agarre. Todos los estudios encontraron mejoras en sus variables tanto para el grupo control como para el experimental, aunque en alguno de los estudios estas mejoras no conseguían mantenerse en el grupo control tras el periodo de seguimiento. Conclusión: Los abordajes de fisioterapia han demostrado disminuir el dolor, mejorar la funcionalidad y aumentar la fuerza de la pinza y del agarre en pacientes con rizartrosis

    Assessing the knowledge of low back pain among physiotherapists in Spain: A cohort study with pre- and post-educational course evaluation

    Background Low back pain (LBP) is the most prevalent musculoskeletal disorder worldwide and physiotherapists are among the primary healthcare professionals assessing and treating the condition. However, scientific knowledge regarding the management of LBP amongst physiotherapists is largely unknown. Objectives To evaluate the level of evidence-based knowledge among Spanish physiotherapists in LBP management and assess knowledge enhancement following the completion of an e-learning course. Design Single-arm cohort study with pre-post evaluation. Methods This single-arm pre-post study involved 1350 physiotherapists practicing in Spain. Initially, participants underwent a 22-question test on evidence-based LBP knowledge, covering socio-economic impact, characteristics of LBP, rehabilitation goals, psychosocial factors, and high- and low-value interventions. After completing the course, participants took a final test with the same 22 questions in randomized order. Results Out of the 1350 physiotherapists enrolled, 857 completed the course. The initial responses demonstrated that almost half of the participants considered medical imaging essential before starting physiotherapy treatment, perceived glucocorticoids as recommended for chronic low back pain, and considered ergonomic adjustments crucial for managing the condition. Individuals who completed their education more than 10 years ago showed a minor improvement in evidence-based knowledge compared to those who recently finished their university degree. Following the course, participants displayed improved knowledge, narrowing prior disparities in error percentages across questions. Conclusion Due to existing gaps in physiotherapists’ evidence-based knowledge of LBP, particularly among those who have worked longer time as physiotherapists, e-learning initiatives may be a feasible approach to support continuous training of physiotherapists

    The "Solid Waste Management Plan on the URJC Móstoles Campus: RECYCLING URJC" project is a component of the Final Degree Project in Environmental Engineering, Energy Engineering, and Industrial Organization Engineering. Its primary objective is to provide students with valuable learning experiences in domestic solid waste management while offering a tangible service to the university community to enhance waste management practices on the campus. This not only enriches their educational journey but also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in areas such as quality education (Goal 4), sustainable cities (Goal 11), and responsible production (Goal 12).     Physical therapy interventions for people experiencing homelessness to improve pain and self‑perceived health status

    Background Homeless shelters have emerged as components of the social services network, playing an important role in providing health care to the homeless population. The aim of this study was to evaluate an individualized physical therapy intervention for people experiencing homelessness and to determine the relationship between selfperceived variables. Methods Pre and post study, setting at the “Santa y Real Hermandad de Nuestra Señora del Refugio y Piedad” homeless shelter in Zaragoza, Spain. Participants were people experiencing homelessness with musculoskeletal disorders who attended a physical therapy service at shelter facilities. A physical therapy program was implemented including health education, exercise and manual therapy, electrotherapy, thermotherapy and bandaging. Demographic variables (age and gender), nationality, employment situation, educational level, pain location, number of painful areas, feeling of loneliness (3-Item Loneliness Scale; values from 3 to 9), pain intensity (Numerical Pain Rating Scale [NPRS]; from 0 to 10) and self-perceived health (Clinical Global Impression [CGI]; from 1 to 7). Results Sixty-four homeless people (age of 46.4 ± 10.9 years) participated in the study. Musculoskeletal pain was reported by 98.4% of subjects, with moderate pain intensities (6.1), and 48.4% presenting with pain at multiple sites. Perceptions of loneliness were low (3.7 ± 2.5) and self-perceived health status was moderately ill (3.5 ± 1.7). Positive significant correlations were identified between pain intensity and self-perceived health. The average number of sessions was 1.5 (± 0.8), with manual therapy (35.6%) followed by health education (23.5%) being the most frequently used techniques. Both pain and self-perceived health improved after treatment, even following a brief intervention. Conclusions This study demonstrates the potentially negative impact of untreated pain on the self-perceived health of homeless individuals with musculoskeletal disorders that should be targeted for consideration. The findings suggest that a paradigm shift in pain management, including a physical therapy service in shelters, is needed to address the rehabilitation demands of these individuals in a real-life context.     Se muestra la validación de la herramienta de valoración denominada Satisfacción con las Ocupaciones Diarias y el Equilibrio Ocupacional (SDO-OB) en personas supervivientes de un ictus para conocer los cambios en la participación en las actividades cotidianas y el grado de satisfacción con las mismas. El estudio ha demostrado que SDO-OB es útil para comprender la situación de un superviviente de ictus y puede identificar las áreas que necesitan intervención y realizar un seguimiento de los cambios provocados por los planes de intervención.     Gait-Based AI Models for Detecting Sarcopenia and Cognitive Decline Using Sensor Fusion

    Abstract: Background/Objectives: Sarcopenia and cognitive decline (CD) are prevalent in aging populations, impacting functionality and quality of life. The early detection of these diseases is challenging, often relying on in-person screening, which is difficult to implement regularly. This study aims to develop artificial intelligence algorithms based on gait analysis, integrating sensor and computer vision (CV) data, to detect sarcopenia and CD. Methods: A cross-sectional case-control study was conducted involving 42 individuals aged 60 years or older. Participants were classified as having sarcopenia if they met the criteria established by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People and as having CD if their score in the Mini-Mental State Examination was ≤24 points. Gait patterns were assessed at usual walking speeds using sensors attached to the feet and lumbar region, and CV data were captured using a camera. Several key variables related to gait dynamics were extracted. Finally, machine learning models were developed using these variables to predict sarcopenia and CD. Results: Models based on sensor data, CV data, and a combination of both technologies achieved high predictive accuracy, particularly for CD. The best model for CD achieved an F1-score of 0.914, with a 95% sensitivity and 92% specificity. The combined technologies model for sarcopenia also demonstrated high performance, yielding an F1-score of 0.748 with a 100% sensitivity and 83% specificity. Conclusions: The study demonstrates that gait analysis through sensor and CV fusion can effectively screen for sarcopenia and CD.     Evaluación comparativa del Pacing y la rehabilitación pulmonar en pacientes con condición post-COVID-19 para optimizar la calidad de vida. Protocolo de ensayo clínico aleatorizado

    Introducción y objetivos: La pandemia de COVID-19 ha dejado a muchos pacientes con síntomas persistentes, conocidos como la condición post-COVID-19, que afectan su calidad de vida. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo comparar la eficacia de un programa de terapia de ejercicio basado en el principio del Pacing y la Rehabilitación Pulmonar en estos pacientes, centrándose en la calidad de vida, la disnea y la fatiga. Los objetivos concretos abarcan la evaluación de los cambios en la calidad de vida utilizando el WHOQOL-BREF, la medición del impacto en la dificultad respiratoria a través del mMRC, la comparación de la disminución de la fatiga entre los dos grupos utilizando la escala FSS, y la reducción de la ansiedad y la depresión mediante el BAI y el BDI-II. Estos objetivos buscan iluminar las mejores estrategias de rehabilitación para mejorar la vida de los pacientes post-COVID-19. Método: Este protocolo constituye un ensayo clínico aleatorizado a simple ciego, donde se compararon dos intervenciones: un programa de terapia de ejercicio basado en el principio del Pacing y la Rehabilitación Pulmonar. Se llevará a cabo durante 24 meses, incluyendo 12 semanas de intervención y dos evaluaciones posteriores a los tres y siete meses. El grupo experimental seguirá un protocolo de rehabilitación basado en el principio del Pacing , mientras que el grupo de control recibirá un programa de rehabilitación pulmonar. La calidad de vida será la variable principal medida mediante el cuestionario WHOQOL-BREF, mientras que las variables secundarias incluirán la disnea evaluada por la mMRC, la fatiga evaluada por la FSS, la ansiedad por la BAI y la depresión por la BDI. Resultados esperados: Se espera observar una mejora en las variables en ambos grupos, pero con un aumento más significativo para el grupo experimental siguiendo el protocolo basado en el principio del Pacing . Conclusión: Tanto el programa de pacing como la rehabilitación pulmonar son susceptibles de mejorar la condición de los pacientes con la condición post-COVID-19. Sin embargo, se espera que el protocolo de pacing esté asociado con una mejora más notable en la calidad de vida y la fatiga, mientras que la rehabilitación pulmonar podría resultar en una reducción más significativa de la disnea. Estos resultados potenciales destacan la importancia de enfoques terapéuticos dirigidos para satisfacer las necesidades específicas de los pacientes post-COVID-19.Introduction and Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic has left many patients with persistent symptoms, known as post-COVID-19 conditions, which affect their quality of life. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of an exercise therapy program based on the principle of Pacing and Pulmonary Rehabilitation in these patients, focusing on quality of life, dyspnea, and fatigue. The specific objectives include evaluating changes in quality of life using the WHOQOL-BREF, measuring the impact on dyspnea through the mMRC, comparing fatigue reduction between the two groups using the FSS scale, and reducing anxiety and depression using the BAI and BDI-II. These objectives seek to shed light on the best rehabilitation strategies to improve the lives of post-COVID-19 patients. Method: This protocol constitutes a randomized single-blind clinical trial, comparing two interventions: an exercise therapy program based on the principle of Pacing and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. It will be carried out over 24 months, including 12 weeks of intervention and two follow-up evaluations at three and seven months. The experimental group will follow a rehabilitation protocol based on the Pacing principle, while the control group will receive a pulmonary rehabilitation program. Quality of life will be the primary variable measured using the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire, while secondary variables will include dyspnea assessed by mMRC, fatigue evaluated by FSS, anxiety by BAI, and depression by BDI. Expected Results: It is hoped to observe an improvement in variables in both groups, but with a more significant increase for the experimental group following the pacing protocol. Conclusion: Both pacing and pulmonary rehabilitation programs are likely to bring improvements to patients suffering from post-COVID-19 condition. However, it is expected that the pacing protocol will be associated with a more notable improvement in quality of life and fatigue, while pulmonary rehabilitation may result in a more significant reduction in dyspnea. These potential results highlight the importance of targeted therapeutic approaches to address the specific needs of post-COVID-19 patients
