    Effect of additional short sprint training on physical performance in adolescent male soccer players: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Purpose: The aim of this systematic review with meta-analysis (SRMA) was to evaluate the effects of additional short sprint training with different intervention training programs (i.e. plyometric training, strength training or multidirectional training) on linear sprint, change of direction speeds (CODS) and jump ability performance in young male soccer players. Methods: An electronic database search was performed, and 7 articles were included in the meta-analysis. Results: The players’ mean age ranged from 7.6 to 18.8 years. The duration of combined interventions was from three weeks to 10 months, with training frequency ranging from one to two sessions per week. In general, the results of the performance were associated with a large and significant reduction in the time of CODS (ES -1.60 (95% CI – 2.33, -.87), Z=4.32 (P< .001)]. Moreover, the effects on vertical jump height showed a non-significant and small improvement between pre and post-test on the vertical jump performance [ES .45 (95% CI – .14, .75), Z=2.90 (P= .004)], with an average heterogeneity of I2 = 0%. Conclusions: The current SRMA suggests that although additional short sprint training may produce improvements in certain aspects of performance, efficacy varies depending on individual and training-specific factors

    Effects of Melatonin Administration on Physical Performance and Biochemical Responses Following Exhaustive Treadmill Exercise

    Exercise, despite being a beneficial activity for health, can also be a source of oxidative imbalance, which can lead to a decrease in performance. Furthermore, melatonin is an endogenous molecule that may counteract exercise-induced oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential ergogenic and antioxidant capacity of melatonin administered for a maximal effort test. A total of 30 rats were divided into three groups—control, exercise, and exercise + melatonin (intraperitoneal administration of 10 mg/kg)—to assess the effects of an exhaustive incremental protocol in the two exercise groups (with and without melatonin) on the treadmill-running performance (final speed reached), lipid and protein oxidation markers (malondialdehyde + 4-hidroxyalkenals and carbonyl content, respectively), and cellular and mitochondrial membranes’ fluidity in skeletal muscle, brain, and liver tissues. Our results show an ergogenic effect of melatonin (31 ± 4 vs. 36 ± 4 cm/s), which may be due to its antioxidant properties being significantly stronger than its protective effect when performing increasing exercise on a treadmill until exhaustion. Melatonin reverted the membrane rigidity in the brain caused by exercise (with no effect on muscle or liver), prevented lipid oxidation in muscle, and prevented lipid and protein oxidation in the liver. Differences between tissues’ responses to exercise and melatonin need to be investigated in the future to elucidate other possible mechanisms that explain melatonin’s ergogenic effect

    Comunicando Ciencia: aprendizaje integrado de Biología Celular e Inglés

    Este proyecto de innovación docente se enmarca en una de las líneas estratégicas principales de la USJ: el aprendizaje integrado de contenidos y lengua. Se establece una colaboración entre las asignaturas de Biología Celular e Inglés del grado en Biomedicina, que prepara a los alumnos para desarrollar una carrera científica y/o investigadora, así que es fundamental que comprendan los contenidos de las asignaturas y que sepan comunicar resultados e interactuar con el resto de la comunidad investigadora. El idioma más utilizado para ello es el inglés, tanto en artículos científicos como en la comunicación oral que tiene lugar en congresos. Nuestro proyecto aúna contenidos de Biología Celular trabajados mediante bibliografía científica desde una perspectiva orientada a la comunicación en inglés, de resultados y conocimientos adquiridos. Para ello, hemos puesto en práctica actividades y talleres donde los alumnos construyen su aprendizaje mientras evalúan sus progresosThis teaching innovation project is part of one of the main strategic initiatives at USJ: the integration of content and language in learning. It establishes collaboration between the subjects of Cell Biology and English in the Biomedicine degree program, which prepares students for scientific and/or research careers. Therefore, it is essential that they understand the subject matter and acquire the skills to communicate results and engage with the broader research community. English is the primary language used for these purposes, both in scientific articles and in oral communications at conferences. Our project combines Cell Biology content, which is studied through scientific literature, focusing on the effective communication of the results and the acquired knowledge in English.     Association Between Pleurotus ostreatus Consumption and More Optimal Sports Performance: A Narrative Review

    In the past few years, much research has been conducted on edible mushrooms, among which Pleurotus ostreatus (PO)—also known as oyster mushrooms—has received attention due to its many health and medicinal benefts. Some research has shown that PO and its active compounds, such as lectins, polysaccharides, primarily β-glucans, phenols, polyphenols, terpenoids, ergosterols, and glycoproteins, are strong immune system modulators, have anti-infammatory properties, and have potentially positive efects on the cardiovascular system and athletic performance. In this narrative review, an extensive search (academic databases from inception to April 25, 2024) was conducted in the scientifc literature, and various aspects of PO and its efects on health and athletic performance were investigated. Tis narrative review article thereby demonstrates the potential benefts of PO for improving the overall baseline health and concomitant athletic sports performance, recovery, and cardiovascular system function. In addition to potential enhancements in antioxidant defense, substrate metabolism, and being a rich source of many essential nutrients, we describe a possible positive relationship between PO intake and improved athletic performance and recovery in athletes after intense exercise by reducing infammation, modulating the microbiome, neutralizing free radicals, and strengthening the cardiovascular system. However, more research in basic studies and clinical trials is needed to investigate PO’s clinical applications, mechanisms, and efects on athletes

    La relevancia de esta investigación se centra en la explicación gráfica del versátil y flexible método de cálculo empleado por los Vandelvira para dar solución a los innovadores sistemas de abovedado esférico que nos han sido legados gracias a sus contribuciones. En el estudio presentado abordamos las diferencias en la formalización del método de cálculo en función de que el trazo final que queramos obtener ya sea un segmento, o por el contrario, un arco de circunferencia. Ello irremediablemente nos obliga a resolver el cálculo gráfico de dos formas distintas, por un lado desde la intrusión en la proyección vertical de un cono de revolución con su eje de giro perpendicular al plano horizontal, lo que engendraría un trazo circular en la proyección de la planta, o por otro lado, si en la planta buscamos una proyección de despiece en tramos rectos, la intrusión del cono en la proyección vertical la haremos de forma que el eje de giro del cono sea paralelo al plano horizontal.The relevance of this research focuses on the graphic explanation of the versatile and flexible calculation method employed by the Vandelviras to solve innovative systems of spherical vaulting bequeathed to us through their contributions. In this work, we address the differences in the formalization of the calculation method depending on whether the f inal trace we want to obtain is a segment or, conversely, an are of a circumference. This inevitab ly requires us to solve the graphic calculation in two different ways. On the one hand, by intruding into the vertical project ion of a cone of revol ution with its axis perpendicular to the horizontal plane, which would generate a circular trace in the projection of the plan.     “Boom respiratorio”: una actividad para el aprendizaje en Afecciones Médicas

    El planteamiento para el desarrollo de esta actividad se encuadra dentro de la Gamificación. Se ha realizado con los alumnos de los grupos A, B, C y D de la asignatura de Afecciones médicas I del segundo curso del Grado de Fisioterapia en la Universidad San Jorge. Se formaron grupos de un máximo de seis componentes. Durante las sesiones docentes señaladas, se presentó a los alumnos cuatro diapositivas conteniendo cada una cuatro aseveraciones sobre un tema concreto. El docente generó un debate sobre el motivo por el que cada cuestión planteada responde a su veracidad o falsedad. Los resultados obtenidos muestran como la preparación de los alumnos para esta actividad, su intervención durante la misma y participación ha sido óptima. Los alumnos consideraron positiva la actividad y los docentes pudimos detectar lagunas en transmisión de la información. Los alumnos pudieron consolidar los conocimientos previos sobre la misma y enfocar de mejor manera su estudio. Todos los alumnos participaron activamente. El hecho de llevar a cabo esta actividad durante una sesión habitual permitió volver a captar la atención de los alumnos.This activity was developed as game-based learning. Context It was developed at the second course of Physiotherapy students in San Jorge University. Students were included in groups of maximal sin people. During the theoretical sessions it was presented four diapositives with four sentences about a specific topic. There was a discussion about the veracity of every sentence. The results that were obtained showed how the preparation of the students and the discussion during the sessions were optimal. Students considered this activity as positive, and teachers could detect information transmission gaps. Students could consolidate knowledge on the subject. They participated actively. As the activity was performed during the theorical sessions, students’ attention was captured

    El marco de las F-Words en el Trastorno del Espectro Autista: Scoping review

    Antecedentes: El Trastorno del Espectro Autista (TEA) se da en el 1% de población, y aunque es idiopático, se trata trastorno del neurodesarrollo de origen neurobiológico pues existen factores de riesgo genéticos y biológicos que influyen en su predisposición. No hay cura farmacológica para el autismo. Por ende, los padres además de buscar posibles tratamientos, también acuden a Google para encontrar recursos e información sobre el autismo. Objetivos: En el presente estudio se evalúa el uso de las F-Words en los recursos disponibles en Google, si es fácil acceder a los recursos, y si poseen suficiente calidad científica. Material y métodos: Se realiza una scoping review siguiendo las directrices PRISMA-ScR. La búsqueda de artículos científicos se realizó durante octubre del 2023 en Pubmed, MedLine, SciELO y Science Direct, debían estar publicados entre 2016-2023, escritos en inglés, e implicar humanos. La literatura gris se buscó en Google durante noviembre de 2023 y para ser incluidas, las webs debían estar publicadas en castellano. Resultados: De las 27 páginas webs analizadas, 12 hablaban de al menos uno de los seis dominios de las F-Words, pero solo 1 página las llamaba por su nombre y, aunque era difícil llegar hasta él, explicaba mediante un folleto cómo aplicarlas en el tratamiento. Adicionalmente, solo la mitad de las páginas que dan recursos, están referenciadas científicamente. Conclusión: Se precisa la continua investigación sobre los nuevos conceptos de tratamiento. Asimismo, los recursos disponibles deben ser accesibles, estar correctamente nombrados, y encontrarse referenciado. Desde la fisioterapia se necesita desarrollar un folleto que hable científicamente de las F-Words para entregar en consulta, y realizar charlas con ponentes de renombre en dicho tema.Background: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects 1% of the population. Although it is idiopathic, it is a neurodevelopmental disorder of neurobiological origin, as there are genetic and biological risk factors that influence predisposition. There is no pharmacological cure for autism. Therefore, in addition to searching for possible treatments, parents also turn to Google to find resources and information about autism. Objectives: The present study evaluates the use of F-words in the resources available in Google, whether the resources are easily accessible, and whether they have sufficient scientific quality. Materials and methods: A scoping review was conducted according to the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The search for scientific articles was performed in Pubmed, MedLine, SciELO, and Science Direct during October 2023; they had to be published between 2016-2023, written in English, and involve human subjects. Gray literature was searched in Google during November 2023, and to be included, websites had to be published in Spanish. Results: Of the 27 web pages analyzed, 12 discussed at least one of the six domains of the F-words, but only 1 page mentioned them by name and, although difficult to access, explained through a pamphlet how to use them in treatment. In addition, only half of the pages providing resources are scientifically referenced. Conclusion: Continued research on autism and new treatment approaches are needed. In addition, Also, the available resources should be accessible, correctly named, and referenced. From physiotherapy it is necesary to develop a brochure that speaks scientifically about F-Words to be handed out in consultations, and to hold lectures with renowned speakers on the subject

    Evaluación comparativa del Pacing y la rehabilitación pulmonar en pacientes con condición post-COVID-19 para optimizar la calidad de vida. Protocolo de ensayo clínico aleatorizado

    Introducción y objetivos: La pandemia de COVID-19 ha dejado a muchos pacientes con síntomas persistentes, conocidos como la condición post-COVID-19, que afectan su calidad de vida. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo comparar la eficacia de un programa de terapia de ejercicio basado en el principio del Pacing y la Rehabilitación Pulmonar en estos pacientes, centrándose en la calidad de vida, la disnea y la fatiga. Los objetivos concretos abarcan la evaluación de los cambios en la calidad de vida utilizando el WHOQOL-BREF, la medición del impacto en la dificultad respiratoria a través del mMRC, la comparación de la disminución de la fatiga entre los dos grupos utilizando la escala FSS, y la reducción de la ansiedad y la depresión mediante el BAI y el BDI-II. Estos objetivos buscan iluminar las mejores estrategias de rehabilitación para mejorar la vida de los pacientes post-COVID-19. Método: Este protocolo constituye un ensayo clínico aleatorizado a simple ciego, donde se compararon dos intervenciones: un programa de terapia de ejercicio basado en el principio del Pacing y la Rehabilitación Pulmonar. Se llevará a cabo durante 24 meses, incluyendo 12 semanas de intervención y dos evaluaciones posteriores a los tres y siete meses. El grupo experimental seguirá un protocolo de rehabilitación basado en el principio del Pacing , mientras que el grupo de control recibirá un programa de rehabilitación pulmonar. La calidad de vida será la variable principal medida mediante el cuestionario WHOQOL-BREF, mientras que las variables secundarias incluirán la disnea evaluada por la mMRC, la fatiga evaluada por la FSS, la ansiedad por la BAI y la depresión por la BDI. Resultados esperados: Se espera observar una mejora en las variables en ambos grupos, pero con un aumento más significativo para el grupo experimental siguiendo el protocolo basado en el principio del Pacing . Conclusión: Tanto el programa de pacing como la rehabilitación pulmonar son susceptibles de mejorar la condición de los pacientes con la condición post-COVID-19. Sin embargo, se espera que el protocolo de pacing esté asociado con una mejora más notable en la calidad de vida y la fatiga, mientras que la rehabilitación pulmonar podría resultar en una reducción más significativa de la disnea. Estos resultados potenciales destacan la importancia de enfoques terapéuticos dirigidos para satisfacer las necesidades específicas de los pacientes post-COVID-19.Introduction and Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic has left many patients with persistent symptoms, known as post-COVID-19 conditions, which affect their quality of life. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of an exercise therapy program based on the principle of Pacing and Pulmonary Rehabilitation in these patients, focusing on quality of life, dyspnea, and fatigue. The specific objectives include evaluating changes in quality of life using the WHOQOL-BREF, measuring the impact on dyspnea through the mMRC, comparing fatigue reduction between the two groups using the FSS scale, and reducing anxiety and depression using the BAI and BDI-II. These objectives seek to shed light on the best rehabilitation strategies to improve the lives of post-COVID-19 patients. Method: This protocol constitutes a randomized single-blind clinical trial, comparing two interventions: an exercise therapy program based on the principle of Pacing and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. It will be carried out over 24 months, including 12 weeks of intervention and two follow-up evaluations at three and seven months. The experimental group will follow a rehabilitation protocol based on the Pacing principle, while the control group will receive a pulmonary rehabilitation program. Quality of life will be the primary variable measured using the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire, while secondary variables will include dyspnea assessed by mMRC, fatigue evaluated by FSS, anxiety by BAI, and depression by BDI. Expected Results: It is hoped to observe an improvement in variables in both groups, but with a more significant increase for the experimental group following the pacing protocol. Conclusion: Both pacing and pulmonary rehabilitation programs are likely to bring improvements to patients suffering from post-COVID-19 condition. However, it is expected that the pacing protocol will be associated with a more notable improvement in quality of life and fatigue, while pulmonary rehabilitation may result in a more significant reduction in dyspnea. These potential results highlight the importance of targeted therapeutic approaches to address the specific needs of post-COVID-19 patients

    Validation of a laser visual feedback and core stability exercise programme to improve lateropulsion reduction and pushing intensity in stroke patients with pusher syndrome: A Delphi study

    Background The patient with pusher syndrome (PS) is characterized by showing postural control alterations due to a lack of perception of his own body in the space. It appears when the patient actively pushes with his unaffected limbs towards the injured side, reacting with resistance to passive straightening towards the midline. Between 10% and 50% of strokes present PS. Nowadays, there is no clearly defined treatment for PS. Objective To design and validate an exercise program using visual feedback and specific core stability exercises (FeViCoS) for the treatment of patients with PS. Methods Validation was conducted by expert consensus using the Delphi method. Thirteen neurorehabilitation experts participated in the process. An online questionnaire with 18 Likert-type questions was used to evaluate the designed program. Consensus was considered reached if there was convergence between the quartile 1 and 3 values (RIQ = Q1-Q3) or if the relative interquartile range (RIR) was less than 20%. The degree of agreement between experts was measured by calculating the Fleiss' kappa coefficient. Results A total of 2 rounds were required to achieve 97.44% consensus with 100% participation. The RIR was less than or equal to 20% for all questions. The Fleiss' kappa index (0.831) showed that the degree of agreement between experts was excellent. Conclusion Neurorehabilitation experts considered FeViCoS valid for the therapeutic approach to patients with PS. Expert consensus suggests a novel strategy in physical therapy clinical practice to improve balance and postural orientation in patients with subacute stroke and PS
