Selected aspects from the everyday life of the Second Republic before the outbreak of war in 1939
The year 1939 functions in Polish historiography as annus terribilis, i.e. primarily the moment when the Second World War began. This does not change the fact that before September 1939, Polish society, apart from the threat of conflict, functioned within the framework of some everyday life. This text is about selected aspects of that everyday life. The year 1939 functions in Polish historiography as annus terribilis, i.e. primarily the moment when the Second World War began. Past and Identity in the Age of Globalization: On Martin Suter’s Novel Melody (2023)
This article contends that in his novel Melody Martin Suter looks to question stereotypical images of masculinity which have been perpetuated in world literature since the late 18th century. The novel itself depicts the last days of an influential Zurich businessman, who only appears to have achieved success because his life has been based on a lie: he is hiding a dark secret, but wants to go on beeing seen as a successful statesman. He publicly manifests his pain over the loss of the love of his life and makes everyone believe that he has been abandoned by his fiancée. The young lawyer he hires to sort out his estate also does not fit into the established images of masculinity. Traumatized by his father’s suicide, the protagonist chooses a poorly paid job and a romance with his employer’s niece. Suter’s Melody is therefore a perfect example of a challenging the traditional images of masculinity, which is typical of literature from the last turn of the century. The novel presents both leading male figures as antiheroes and questions the ideal of masculinity as a figment of the imagination. Representation of male emotionality in Vanda Rozenbergová’s novels Common Night Peace and Man out of Pit, Children of Love
This paper examines the representation of the male protagonists‘ emotionality in Vanda ozenbergová´s novels Common Night Peace (2020) and Man in Depression, Children in Love (2017). The conceptual framework of the paper rests on the literary character analysis based on the exploration of the mimetic and thematic dimensions of the literary character. The analysis concentrates on delineating various forms of escapism as they emerge within the mimetic dimension of character construction. In parallel, it examines the interrelation between narrative space, personal thematics, and masculine emotionality within the thematic dimension of character analysis. Emotionality, implicitly rendered and directed inward, constitutes a central element of these novels; it not only shapes the characterization of male protagonists but also imbues the narrative space with additional layers of meaning. This paper examines the representation of the male protagonists‘ emotionality in Vanda ozenbergová´s novels Common Night Peace (2020) and Man in Depression, Children in Love (2017). Emotions in the language of public men
In selected alternative Slovak media, symptomatic emotional-expressive lexemes were identified in public written speeches by five politically active Slovak men. These speeches exhibit characteristic emotional-expressive styles that both reveal the speakers’ own emotions and seek to influence the emotional responses of their intended audiences. The lexemes serve as markers of evaluative relationships linked to the perception and interpretation of specific events. Positive and negative emotional evaluations are often intertwined with intellectual evaluative components, reflecting the speakers’ cognitive and psychological engagement. A combined linguistic and content analysis was conducted on selected texts published in 2022. The alternative monthly Extraplus, in particular, provides space for emotionally charged and argumentative contributions, which frequently include manipulative or conspiratorial content. The study focuses on identifying emotionality in language through symptomatic emotional-expressive lexemes, which manifest in figurative and indirect expressions, idioms, as well as ironic and sarcastic constructions. In selected alternative Slovak media, symptomatic emotional-expressive lexemes were identified in public written speeches by five politically active Slovak men. On heterogeneous masculinity: Harper Lee’s novel To kill a Mockingbird
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, contemporary American writer Harper Lee, presents a series of vividly drawn images of masculine figures. The main character is a representation of what might be termed a ‘real’ man: honest, fair, courageous, determined, and casual. The other characters, despite appearing somewhat in the shadow of the protagonist, are also worthy of consideration as subjects for literary interpretation. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, contemporary American writer Harper Lee, presents a series of vividly drawn images of masculine figures. Cyber Threats of Machine Learning
This paper offers a detailed and comprehensive analysis of the various cyber threats that target machine learning models and applications. It begins by characterizing basic classifiers and exploring the objectives of intentional attacks on typical classifiers, providing a foundational understanding of the threat landscape. The paper then thoroughly examines the vulnerabilities that machine learning systems face, alongside the methods for detecting, countering, and responding to these cyber threats. Special attention is given to specific types of threats, including attacks on machine learning models, adversarial attacks, poisoning attacks, and backdoor attacks. The paper also addresses critical issues such as attacks on data protection mechanisms, replay attacks, denial of service attacks, learning model theft, malware, and breaches in data privacy. Each of these threats is analyzed in detail, with a focus on their potential impact and the strategies that can be employed to mitigate them. In its conclusion, the paper provides recommendations on regulatory measures and best practices to safeguard machine learning models and applications against these evolving cyber threats. These recommendations emphasize the necessity for a robust regulatory framework to ensure the security, reliability, and integrity of machine learning systems in an increasingly digital and interconnected world
Modern Application Lifecycle Management Approaches
Effective application lifecycle management (ALM) relies on modern tools and practices that streamline development while ensuring security and stability. This article examines key components of a modern ALM strategy, including DevOps culture, CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code, containerization, orchestration, monitoring, observability, and the growing role of AI. Special attention is given to the integration of security into the CI/CD process, particularly through automated testing techniques such as Static Application Security Testing (SAST) and Dynamic Application Security Testing (DAST). These practices help identify vulnerabilities early in the development cycle, reducing risk and enhancing application reliability.Adopting these technologies involves initial investments in licenses, training, and team restructuring. However, these efforts are rewarded through automation of repetitive tasks, accelerated deployment cycles, improved scalability, and proactive issue detection. AI-driven tools further enhance development efficiency through intelligent code suggestions, predictive analytics, and automated bug detection. By embracing these modern approaches, organizations can achieve a more secure, efficient, and agile development process, better equipped to adapt to a rapidly evolving technological landscape
A Vision-Based System for Rapid DXF Generation in Metalworking: Image Processing Pipeline and Economic Feasibility Case Study
Low-volume and custom production jobs in small and medium-sized metalworking enterprises are often declined due to the high fixed costs and time requirements of manual CAD modeling. This paper presents a practical, production-ready desktop application for the automated generation of DXF files from photographs of physical parts, designed to support rapid laser cutting and prototyping workflows. The system combines a user-friendly GUI with a robust computer vision pipeline including adaptive thresholding, contour extraction, geometric scaling, and vector simplification. Unlike generic raster-to-vector tools, it targets the specific needs of SMEs: offline use, closed contours, minimal training, and compatibility with CAM systems. A real-world case study demonstrates the successful replication of an agricultural machine parts, showing ~90% reduction in preparation time and ~45% profit margin on the order. Interviews with industry stakeholders confirm the potential of the proposed solution to recover previously unviable jobs and increase monthly revenues by an estimated 5-7%. This interdisciplinary contribution integrates computer vision and applied economics, offering a scalable solution to improve productivity and digital inclusion in SMEs
