    Get PDF
The development of data driven power system applications requires large datasets with high quality data. However, the creation of such datasets can be time consuming and expensive. This paper proposes an efficient approach for creating datasets that can be used for data driven power system applications. The proposed approach is based on the concept of data augmentation. Data augmentation involves generating new data samples from the existing data samples by applying various transformations. The idea is to use a small set of original data samples and generate a large number of augmented data samples. The augmented data samples can then be used to create a dataset that is representative of the actual data distribution. The approach involves three main steps: Data selection, data augmentation and dataset creation. In the data selection step, a small set of representative data samples is selected from the available data. In the data augmentation step, various transformations include rotation, scaling, translation, and noise addition. In the dataset creation step, the augmented data samples are combined with the original data samples to create a final dataset. The proposed approach was tested on two datasets, IEEE 14 bus and IEEE 118 bus datasets. The results showed that proposed approach was able to create dataset that were representative of the actual data distribution. The dataset created using the proposed approach were used to train and evaluate a data driven power system application for voltage stability assessment. The results showed that the application achieved high accuracy in preaching the voltage stability of the power system. In conclusion, the proposed approach provides in efficient and cost effective method for creating datasets for data approach is based on the concept of data augmentation, which involves generating new data samples from the existing data samples by applying various transformations. The approach was tested on two datasets and showed promising results. The approach can be extended to other domains where the creations of large dataset are required

The correlational survey design was used. The study population includes 275 parents and primary school teachers from Delta State. A total number of 275 respondents consisting of 100 parents and 175 primary school teachers were selected from 10 primary schools from Delta State. In selecting primary schools, proportional stratified sampling technique was used. The 10 schools were selected from 6 local government areas across the 3 Senatorial Districts in Delta State. A questionnaire self - designed and titled “Psychological Effects of Parents Utilization of Vacation for Extra Lessons Questionnaire (PEPUVELQ)”, validated and its reliability equally determined via a pilot study using test re-test reliability technique with a coefficient index of 0.84 was used. Simple percentage, mean scores, standard deviation and coefficient of determination using 2.50 as benchmark to provide answers to the research questions. Pearson Product Moment Correlation Statistic was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that psychological effects of parents utilizing vacation for extra lessons for their wards and the impact on students’ attitude to learning in primary schools in Delta State. In conclusion, the utilization of vacation lessons by parents can have both positive and negative psychological effects on children. While vacation lessons can provide academic benefits, enrichment opportunities, and structure, they can also lead to increased stress and anxiety, pressure to perform and meet expectations, limited downtime and relaxation, impact on mental health and well-being and potential negative impact on parent-child relationships. It therefore recommended that parents should consider individual child needs and boundaries. Set realistic expectations and goals. Parents are to engage other forms of learning that could be fun as well during the holidays. Encourage balance between work and play. Monitor workload and stress levels

    Get PDF
This study investigated the moderating role of personality traits on the relationship between stigmatisation and health-seeking behaviour among adults. The sample consisted of 211 participants (114 males and 97 females) aged 18 to 65 years (M = 34.82, SD = 11.90) drawn from the General Outpatient Department of Enugu State University Teaching Hospital Parklane and University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Ituku/Ozalla in Enugu State, Nigeria. A purposive sampling technique was employed. The study utilised three instruments: the Big Five Inventory, the Stigma Scale, and the Health-Seeking Behaviour Scale. A correlation research design was adopted, and moderated hierarchical regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses. The results revealed that stigmatisation negatively predicts health-seeking behaviour (β = -0.340, p < 0.001), indicating that higher levels of stigmatisation are associated with a lower likelihood of seeking healthcare. Contrary to expectations, the Big Five personality traits did not directly predict health-seeking behaviour. However, they moderated the relationship between stigmatisation and health-seeking behaviour, with agreeableness negatively moderating this relationship (β = -0.027, p < 0.041). Additionally, demographic variables such as age, education level, and religious affiliation significantly influenced health-seeking behaviour. These findings highlight the importance of addressing stigmatization in healthcare settings to improve health-seeking behaviour. One practical implication is the need for healthcare providers to develop targeted interventions that consider individual personality traits and demographic factors to effectively support stigmatized individuals in seeking timely medical help

The Local Governement is the  thrid tier of Government in Nigeria. The main objective of this paper is to examine the local government service commission and local governments authorities in Nigeria with regards to their operations in the present dispensation of politics. How they render social service, political emancipation or awareness and other developmental programs required of them to the rural communities. Unfortunately the local government administration in Nigeria is bedevilled with inefficiencie such as, politics of nepotism and favouritism. The study concludes that Local Governments should be totally overhauled and allowed indepedennce and autonomy by the State Government. Local governments service should be allowed to carry out their statutory function. Also the issue of accountability, transparency, good governance and mostly importantly the electoral process, that is free and fair should be consolidated for this level of government to make any positive impact because it is nearest government to the people

The 2019 General Elections, Logistics Challenges and Electoral Transparency: the Implications for Democratic Consolidation in Nigeria

    Get PDF
The beauty of democracy lies in the sovereign power it confers on the people to make choice of leaders based on popular mandate. The incursion of the military into Nigeria government and politics for more than three decades had been a disaster for the country’s democratic governance inherited from British colonial rule. However, after over 20 years of the return of uninterrupted democratic governance in 1999, democratic principles, norms and ethics of free and unfettered electoral processes are yet to be adequately internalized. Several elections organized to effect change of government between 1999-2019 have ended up in charade of electoral irregularities, with each election period gaining more sophistication than the previous one. This paper interrogated the logistic challenges that vitiated the transparency of electoral process in 2019 in view of the introduction of the new electronic device, Card Reader, to forestall electoral frauds. The paper adopted Marxist theory of post-colonial state as adumbrated by Hamza Alvi and others. The study argues that democratic consolidation has become elusive in Nigeria because of high level of electoral manipulations by the political class who are interested in capturing power by all means for primitive accumulation. The study recommends that the rules of the game must be strictly adhered to and all logistic plans put in place to avoid political apathy and advance our electoral process in the subsequent elections. &nbsp

The Potential of Machine Learning Techniques in Predicting Malaria Outbreaks in Nigeria

    Get PDF
Malaria, an infectious disease transmitted by mosquitoes and caused by protists of the Plasmodium genus, poses a significant global health threat, contributing substantially to morbidity and mortality rates. World Health Organization (WHO) estimated approximately 229 million cases worldwide, with children under five years old comprising 67% (274,000) of those affected, representing the most vulnerable demographic group. Despite the prevalence of malaria, existing research has not extensively explored the utilization of machine learning techniques to predict malaria outbreaks, in Nigeria. This study aims to fill this gap by employing five supervised machine learning methods: Naive Bayes, Support Vector Machines (SVM), Linear Regression, Logistic Regression, and K-Nearest Neighbor. Utilizing meteorological and malaria incidence data spanning from 2010 to 2020, the research employed the Scikit-learn library within the Anaconda IDE, utilizing the Python programming language. Results indicate that Naive Bayes achieved the highest accuracy, with an average accuracy of 79.1% for both testing and training datasets, making it the optimal model for predicting malaria incidence outbreaks based on the dataset utilized. Following closely is Support Vector Machine (SVM) with an average accuracy of 75.45% for both testing and training data, followed by K-Nearest Neighbor with an average accuracy of 70.8%. Logistic Regression exhibited an average accuracy of 68%. However, Linear Regression, with an average accuracy of 26.05%, is not recommended for predicting malaria incidence outbreaks based on the findings of this research
