    Get PDF
This study, presents an optimized photo-Fenton process degradation of Allura red dye from textile process industrial wastewater, by the determination of optimal conditions for the photo-Fenton process to achieve maximum Allura red degradation. Water scarcity is a critical challenge and a cornerstone of sustainable progress. Meeting the growing demand for drinking water is essential for modern societal development. The photo-Fenton process is an effective method for the degradation of organic pollutants and dyes in wastewater. The effects of different parameters such as pH, concentration of hydrogen peroxide, concentration of iron (III) ions, and initial dye concentration on the degradation efficiency were investigated. A central composite design (CCD) was used to determine the optimal values of the parameters. The results showed that the maximum degradation of Allura red dye (96%) was achieved at pH 3.5, hydrogen peroxide concentration of 0.1 M, iron (III) ion concentration of 0.005 M, and initial dye concentration of 25 mg/. The mineralization of the dye was evaluated by measuring the total organic carbon (TOC) removal. The maximum TOC removal was found to be 76.2%. Therefore, the optimized photo-Fenton process was considered a promising method for the removal of Allura red dye from textile industry wastewater. The experimental model generated precise equations, providing valuable insights into the degradation process

This study investigated impulsivity and perceived social support as predictors of suicidal ideation among senior secondary school students in Nsukka Educational Zone Enugu State Nigeria. Three hundred participants comprising 153 females and 147 males with age range of 13-17 years (M 14.77, SD 1.48) and were drawn using a multi-stage sampling technique (balloting, systematic and simple random methods). The study adopted a correlational research design in which multidimensional scale of perceived social support (Zimet et al., 1988), The Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire-JR (Reynolds, 1987) and Barratt Impulsive Scale -11: The BIS-11 (Stanford et al., 2009) were administered for data collection. While hierarchical multiple linear regression analysis was used for data analysis. The results indicated that impulsivity positively predicted suicidal ideation among secondary school students β = 4.585, t = 15.677, P<.001).  This implies that students who are impulsive are at high risk of suicidal ideation. The results further revealed that perceived social support and its three dimensions did not predict suicidal ideation among secondary school students (β= 5.412,  t = 1.818, Significant others β= .745,  t = -.463, family β= 1.070,  t = .663, friends β= -2.519,  t = -.1.276 ,P>.05). Finally, impulsivity and perceived social support did not jointly predict suicidal ideation among secondary school students β= -.082, t = -1.972, p>.05. There is need for orientation/workshop among secondary school students to educate them against taking actions without foresight that are poorly conceived, prematurely expressed, unnecessarily risky, and inappropriate to situations at hand in the bid to forestall suicidal ideation

Sovereignty, Strategy, and Statecraft: A Clausewitzian Perspective on the Russia-Ukraine Crisis

    Get PDF
This study analyzes the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian conflict through the lens of Carl von Clausewitz\u27s theories on war, specifically his concepts of the nature of war, the "trinity" of war, and the idea of war as a continuation of politics by other means. Clausewitz’s theories underscore the inherent political dimensions of warfare, the dynamic interplay between military power and national policy, and the unpredictable nature of conflict. By applying a Clausewitzian framework, this paper examines how historical, cultural, and political factors influence the conflict and shape the decision-making processes of the involved actors. Utilizing a case study research design, primary data were gathered through focus group discussions with prominent historians, foreign policy experts, and international relations scholars. Additional data were sourced from scholarly books, journal articles, and reports by think tanks and international organizations, including the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the International Crisis Group, and NATO. Findings indicate that Russia’s invasion represents a continuation of political objectives driven by aspirations for control and influence over Ukraine, while Ukraine’s resistance embodies national will and the defense of sovereignty, highlighting the critical role of public opinion in conflict dynamics. Moreover, the study underscores the Clausewitzian view of diplomacy as an essential component of statecraft in wartime. The research concludes that sustained diplomatic engagement and open channels of communication, potentially facilitated by neutral third-party mediators, could play a pivotal role in de-escalating the conflict by focusing on shared interests and prospects for long-term stability

The Jurisprudential Position of Strike in Nigeria: Interrogating the Principle of No Work No pay

    Get PDF
Strike as a means by which employees exert pressure on their employers to accede to their demands is undertaken where there is a breakdown of negotiations between employers and employees. This implies that strike is a by-product of human existence, especially on matters in which there is disagreement or for which some people are dissatisfied. The issue is that in our statute books strike is less legal, than the power of the unions to express themselves. The labour laws provide the legal framework for declaring a strike. Thus, this study, attempts to examine the statutory and regulatory framework for declaring strike, especially the conditions under which the government can invoke the doctrine of NO Work, No Pay rule. The paper posits that while there exists no law which guarantees the right of a Nigerian worker to proceed on industrial strike action, the law recognizes the existence of strikes in trade disputes which section 3 to 14 of Trade Disputes Act generally provides the conditions. Finally, the paper frowns at the way and manner government representatives invoke the principle of NO Work, No Pay policy without recourse to the relevant agreements collectively signed by labour and management abi initio. It recommends a better industrial labour education for government representatives

This paper explores the history, nature and development of international humanitarian law: a review. Doctrinal research methodology was used. International Humanitarian Law (IHl) earlier known as the laws of war is applied in the armed conflict to protect those who don’t take part in the hostilities or no longer taking part in the hostility M.S Isian (2018) opined, that the rules of conflict or fight although, first documented in 1863 after the war of Solferino, it was slightly existed and practiced from the beginning of human being. The earliest societies, the Papua, the Sumerians, Babylon, Persians, the Greek, and the Roman, in all societies had some rules of fighting and these rules were strictly followed by people. Every religion namely, Christian, Islamic, Hindu and Buddhist contains a handful of provisions on the law of armed conflict (LOAC). The scattered provisions of (LOAC) have been accumulated in the documents, the lieber code in 1863 and the first Geneva Convention 1864. Later on many Conventions, Protocols, Declarations on Armed conflicts (AC) have been adopted in various times depending on the nature of conflict and protection of the victims. Four Geneva Conventions in 1949, it’s three Additional protocols (APs) in 1977 and 2005 and the permanent International criminal court in 1998 have given a great success to the development of International Humanitarian Law

    Get PDF
This paper is on financial inclusion policy and the poor: Evidence from Nigeria. The main aim of the paper is to assess the financial inclusion policy implementation in Nigeria in order to determine its impact on availability, accessibility, and affordability of financial services in Nigeria. The paper adopts qualitative and quantitative approaches in the collection and analysis of data. Using a population size of 250 respondents, a census sampling technique in which all the entire population was utilized was adopted. Findings from the study show that financial inclusion has to a great extent encouraged the availability, accessibility, and affordability of financial services in Nigeria. The paper concludes that access to and affordability of financial services allows the poor to save money outside the house safely and helps in mitigating the risks that the poor faces in times of economic shocks. The paper therefore recommends that in order to remedy comprehension issues about financial inclusion, it will be important to make operating interfaces and documentation available in major Nigerian local languages (e.g., Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, etc). Again, in order to further promote use of mobile money and lessen the preference for cash, there is need to target education of the public to anchor the notion that mobile money is safe and more cost-efficient than traditional cash-in-cash out operations
