AN ASSESSMENT OF REGIONAL COOPERATION AND MANAGEMENT OF BOKO HARAM INSURGENCY: A FOCUS ON BORNO STATE OF NIGERIA, 2015-2019

    No full text
Most West African countries are weak in exercising control and authority in locations that are faraway from their national capitals. This weakness of these states offers sanctuary and an enablingenvironment to terrorist movement within Africa and beyond. The ungoverned remote areas of WestAfrica and vast empty land of the Sahel regions provide safe haven for international terroristorganisations. The wide spread and diffusion of insurgences and acts of terrorism have sensitizedgovernments and their agencies to not only consciously identify the roots causes of these phenomenabut to put a collaborative and complex mechanism to address the problem. This paper thereforeexamines the effectiveness of regional cooperation against the Boko Haram insurgency with the focuson Borno State of Nigeria especially during the first tenure of President Mohammed Buhari from2015 to 2019. The paper is anchored on the Security Complex theory. In terms of research method, the paper relies on the Explanatory Design and utilizes empirical data generated from officialrecords and data from secondary sources with descriptive analysis. The paper argues that the WestAfrican sub-region between 2015 to 2019 has improved members cooperation to enhance securitythrough the formation of a multinational joint task force to fight insurgents though, the situation stillremains fragmented and fragile with serious humanitarian consequence. The paper thereforerecommends that beyond military approach, there is also the need to improve the quality of lives ofthe people and humanitarian assistance, rehabilitation and socio-economic development programmesof the affected and ravaged region

REVISITING CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS AND 2015 GENERAL ELECTIONS IN NIGERIA: ITS RELEVANCE TO 2023 GENERAL ELECTIONS?

    No full text
The attention of the international community is on Nigeria again because it is another electioneering period (though amidst worsening personal security situations) when it is expected that the country should solidify and consolidate its nascent democracy. In view of this, the purpose of this paper is to x-ray the historic 2015 general elections which have been widely acknowledged to be arguably, the freest, fairest and most credible in Nigeria\u27s electoral history since independence and recommend derived lessons that should be applied to the forthcoming general elections in 2023 in order to have an even better electoral success. While x-raying an array of secondary data on 2015 general elections in Nigeria, it was observed that the exceptional roles of the international civil society organisations with the collaboration of some local ones contributed very significantly to making that year\u27s electoral process and outcomes historically successful and this, no doubt, has not been adequately covered in extant literature. The paper argues that although civil society organisations have been involved in Nigeria\u27s elections for decades, at no time have the international csos been so deeply committed as in 2015 due mainly to some pre-election\u27s predictions about the country\u27s breakup

NIGERIA-ECOWAS COMMON IMMIGRATION POLICY FROM 2007-2019: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES

    No full text
Human migration encompasses permanent or temporary relocation of persons from their places of initial abode to another place, in search of means of livelihood, family reunion, or other things that serve as motivation for the movement. Specifically, the study aims at investigating the economic opportunities of skills, transfer through citizens\u27 migration from one African country to another and discussing the potentials in having flexible intra-continental migration laws and to identify the measures put in place for smooth and effective implementation of the economic integration agenda of the ECOWAS Common Immigration Policy in Nigeria from 2007 to 2019.This study is anchored on functionalist social theory of migration. Migration is perceived as a positive phenomenon that contributes to prosperity productivity, and greater fairness in origin and destination societies through dual direction of flows of incomes that includefunds, goods and knowledge. Herbert Spencer and Robert Merton are proponents of this theory. The study sourced for secondary data. The data was analysed in themes. The study concludes that while migration could be perceived as a negative phenomenon on nations, productive advantages too abound in developing countries. The mobility of human capital would help pave way for exchange of ideas and skills which could lead to a robust socio-economic development in the West Africa sub-region. The study recommends that ECOWAS countries need to put in place effective mechanisms that would checkmate crimes associated with migration as a way of checking the perceived negative effect of migration

Unemployment has remained one of the current and steady social problems thatcharacterized Kaduna state. Measures to address this social plague have featuredprominently in the development agenda of successive governments without much positiveresult in the State. Consequently, this study examined the effect of EnvironmentalBeautication Training Scheme (EBTS) on Unemployment in Kaduna State. The studypostulated that the Environmental Beautication Training Scheme (EBTS) of the NDE hasnot signicantly affected the rate of unemployment in Kaduna State. EmpowermentTheory by Julian Rappaport (1981) had been adopted as theoretical framework tounderpin the study. Data was collected with the aid of structured questionnaireadministered to 123 respondents and 6 interviewees. Purposive and Simple randomsampling techniques were adopted for interviews and questionnaire administrationrespectively in the study. Data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statisticaltools. The study revealed that EBTS has not signicantly reduced the rate ofunemployment in Kaduna State. The study further revealed that insufcient allocation offunds is an impediment to EBTS in Kaduna state. The study concluded that EBTS willeffectively combat unemployment in the state if adequately funded. The studyrecommends that the federal government should increase allocations to EBTS via NDE soas to achieve its statutory responsibility of job creation

This study examined the effect of Nigeria-United States Trade Relations on SocioEconomic Development in Nigeria. The Human Capital Theory (HCT) was adopted as theoretical framework. The study utilizes survey and content analysis research design. The population of the study are; Nigerian Export Promotion Council, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Nigeria Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Manufacturing Association (NACCIMA). The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyze the data collected. The Finding from the study reveals that, Nigeria trade relations with US did not promoted made in Nigeria goods in Nigeria within the period under reviewed. Experts and operators in the manufacturing sector have identified consumers\u27 lack of confidence in local items as being responsible for the sector\u27s poor growth. The study further revealed that, Nigeria trade relations with US have increased Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Nigeria. This was affirmed by 62.3% of the sample population. Finding from the study revealed Nigeria trade relations with US did not create employment opportunities in Nigeria. The study recommends that, Nigerians and consumers should have confidence in local made goods in order to promote Nigeria exports and balance its trade relations with deficit US. Nigeria trade relations with US should take cognizance of a deficit in the balance of payments, this is because; Nigeria\u27s GDP can be corrected by encouraging exports. Nigeria exports can be encouraged by producing quality products, increasing exports through increased production and productivity. There should be adjustment through Exchange Depreciation (Price Effect) in Nigeria relations with US. Their relationship should ensure flexible exchange rates; equilibrium in the balance of payments and reduce forces of demand and supply on foreign exchange and create employment opportunities for Nigeria

Hospitals are the essential part of our lives, providing best medical facilities to people suffering from various ailments, which may be due to change in climatic conditions, increased work-load, emotional trauma stress. It is necessary for the hospitals to keep track of its daily activities and records of its patients, doctors, nurses, and other staff personals that keep the hospital running smoothly and successfully. But keeping track of all the activities and their records on paper is very tedious and prone to error. Also, it is very inefficient and a time-consuming process Observing the continuous increase in population and number of people visiting the hospital. Recording and maintaining all these records is highly unreliable, inefficient and prone to error. It has also been observed that patient records tend to be duplicated and sometimes unavailable at critical time when it is required for emergencies. It is also not economically and technically feasible to maintain these records on paper, this paper proposed the use of Web-based Hospital Management Information System in automation of the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University Lapai Health care Centre

SOME INDUSTRIAL MINERAL DEPOSITS IN NIGER STATE OF NIGERIA AND THE INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS

    No full text
Physical mapping and geochemical characterization of some industrial mineral occurrences in Nigeria’s geopolitical State of Niger have been undertaken as a basis for assessing their economic quantities, modes of occurrence and physico-chemical characteristics as raw materials for mineral-based industries and industrialization. Physical mapping-surveys have been carried out on clay, marble and talc deposits. Economic deposits of clay have been mapped at Mashegu, Kutigi and Lemu, marble and clay at Kwakuti and talc at Kagara. All the mapped industrial minerals occur in economic quantities, although the exact reserves have not yet been measured. The clays at Kutigi have high content of kaolinite (on the basis of XRD examination) while those at Lemu and Mashegu have been diminished by high silica content (XRD and XRF measurements). The marble deposit at Kwakuti is highly calcitic (very lowly dolomitic) with significant content of Cu, Pb, Zn, and Ba traces; the associated clays at the same locality have high alumina content and a significant content of Zr traces. The content of iron oxide (Fe2O3) in the talc at Kagara and clays at Lemu and Mashegu may constitute obstacles in their industrial applications. The clays at Kutigi have the required economic quantity and chemical parameters for exploitation as raw materials for a ceramic/sanitary ware industry while those at Mashegu and Lemu are more suited for pharmaceutical industry. The marble deposits at Kwakuti can support a large size cement factory with raw material supply for 35 years (at presently mapped occurrences; additional reserves may be booked with time). The large talc deposits at Kagara can support an equally large cosmetic factory

The trust of this paper historicized the various government agricultural policies and its efforts in ensuring food security in Lagos State between the periods of 1967 up to 2019. It should be reiterated here that in this work, the focus is only on policies affecting the production of the cash and food crops alone simply because of their primacy in revenue generation both for the government and the metropolis, and also because of their political and economic significance. A historical research method was adopted in this study. In this regard, writings and research works on major issues relating to agricultural policies and its impact on food production in Lagos State were collected and historically analyzed. The study constitutes a fieldwork survey to the ministry of Agriculture both state and federal and collection of both oral and written sources. This implies the use of relevant materials from all possible sources. It includes visiting areas of study to collect information, examining the oral sources to find answers to questions raised, and also visiting libraries and archives to look for relevant information on the topic. The trust of this paperconcluded that agricultural policies are germane to the attainment of food security in the state and the country at large
