THE ROLE OF BARO RIVER PORT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF INLAND WATERWAYS TRANSPORT SYSTEM IN COLONIAL NIGER PROVINCE OF NORTHERN NIGERIA, 1900-1960
This paper examines the role of Baro Niger River Port in the development of inland waterways transport in colonial Northern Nigeria between 1900 and 1960. The Port\u27s strategic location on the Niger River made it a critical hub for the transportation of goods and materials. Using both primary and secondary sources derived from archival documents, oral interviews, books, dissertations and theses, the study finds that the construction of Baro Port and its adjoined railway line solidifies the transport system on the inland waterways in Nigeria. The paper argues that despite the increasing concentration on other modes of transport systems among other challenges, the port was a significant point for the import of European-made goods, and export crops such as groundnut, cotton, and palm oil, through to the end of British rule in Nigeria. Therefore, this paper contributes to the understanding of the history of inland waterways transport by highlighting the important role Baro Port played in the economic history of colonial Nigeria
Econometric Analysis of Factors Affecting Access to Market by Yam Farmers in Benue State
It is evident that in developing countries, agriculture serves as a foundation for economic activities. It plays an active role in determining the wealth, social and political system of a society. Therefore, policies and programmes as well as research and development in the sector is necessary for increased productivity and marketing. This study examines the variables influencing yam farmers’ access to markets in Benue State. The level to which the produce intended for sale the previous season was actually sold was used to determine whether or not the market was accessible. Data were collected with the use of a structured questionnaire from three local governments in Sankera Zone, the dominant yam producing zone of Benue state. The results of the logistic regression analysis showed the variables that affected the likelihood that a farmer in the study area would have easy access to markets. Gender, educational attainment, prior farming experience, vehicle ownership, and market space all showed positive and had a significant impact on the likelihood that a farmer would have simple access to the market. However, the age of the household and size had a negative effect, and were statistically significant. A farmer training programme is strongly recommended to equip farmers with modern farming techniques. Additionally, the establishment of infrastructural facilities, market boards, and yam processing factories were recommended to support their endeavors

The data was analysed using the random effect panel regression model. Findings revealed that all independent variables (Short term, long term and total debt) have a negative statistically significant effect on share price volatility. On the basis of the study’s findings, the research suggested that, listed companies should adopt effective debt management strategy to mitigate share price volatility. Also, Capital market and security authorities (CMSA) are advised to provide regulatory guidance and enforce transparent reporting requirements for listed companies. Furthermore, Investors are encouraged to adopt a strategic investment approach, considering companies with effective debt management in their decisions. The advent and increasing households’ uptake of digital credit (an unsecured high interest loan provided through digital channels with little or no knowledge of the conditionality of the credit by the up takers) in recent times has been accompanied with mounting household over indebtedness. This study investigated the impact of digital micro-credit and financial literacy on households’ over-indebtedness in Niger state Nigeria. ROLE OF MISMANAGED CLINICAL WASTE ON SPREAD OF INFECTION: : A MINI REVIEW
Medical waste contains hazardous substances, microorganisms and contaminated body fluids. Discarding this waste is a significant aspect of health care delivery, especially in nations with poor hygiene and overpopulated medicals centers, hospitals and clinics. Diagnostic centers also produce waste that are extremely harmful and place people at risks of deadly diseases. Strategies must be designed to prevent spread of infections through provision of standard operating procedures for handling waste from generation, separation, collections, storage, transportations, and treatments. Awareness must be formed at all stages of societies through the several means of communications with training and education so that the risk of spreading the hazardous and infectious substances can be minimized. Also, health care workers should have a basic understanding of healthcare and treatment or disposal of medical wastes. Inappropriate handling and discarding of medical wastes by the management, staff member, waste picker, and patients would constitute risk of contact with various kind of infections including viral hepatitis B, hepatitis C, human immunodeficiency virus, typhoid, skin diseases/allergy, diarrhea, dysentery, tuberculosis and other infections.
