This study evaluates the role of televised health programmes in promoting awareness of sickle cell disease (SCD) in Abuja, Nigeria. Using a survey research design, data were collected from 400 respondents through questionnaires distributed across Abuja\u27s six area councils. Findings revealed that 75% of respondents regularly watch health-related television content, with 61% favouring Channels TV over NTA for its dynamic programming. While 77% acknowledged television\u27s role in improving SCD knowledge and 68% reported attitude shifts toward premarital genotype testing, only 36% translated awareness into preventive behaviours. Significant barriers identified included poor electricity supply (73%), cultural myths (71%), and limited media resources (51%). Despite television\u27s reach, inconsistent messaging and resource constraints limited behavioural impact. The study underscores television\u27s potential as a health education tool but advocates for multi-platform strategies, culturally sensitive content, and policy reforms to address structural barriers. Recommendations include enhanced funding for health programming, journalist training in medical communication, and community-led interventions to amplify SCD campaigns through culturally relevant messaging

As social media becomes increasingly central to political communication in Nigeria, there remains limited empirical research on how political parties leverage these platforms for voter education, particularly in strategic electoral regions like Abuja. This study examines the social media strategies employed by the Labour Party (LP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) for voter education during Nigeria\u27s 2023 general elections in the Federal Capital Territory. Using a quantitative approach with 380 questionnaire responses, the study identifies the dominant platforms (WhatsApp, Facebook, and Twitter/X), measures social media\u27s influence on voter participation, analyzes message-voter education correlations, and documents implementation challenges. Findings reveal Twitter/X as the most utilized platform by both parties, though significant barriers emerged, including misinformation proliferation and limited reach among digitally excluded demographics. The study recommends hybrid voter education models combining online strategies (like TikTok and Instagram for youth engagement) with offline approaches (town halls, radio programs) to bridge the digital divide. These findings contribute to understanding how political parties can optimize digital tools for democratic participation in Nigeria\u27s evolving media landscape while addressing the persistent challenges of misinformation and unequal digital access

    No full text
Household saving in developing economies is influenced by various factors that causes a decline in the amount of saving despite the importance of saving to household development. Given that saving is highly a personal matter, strategies to encourage saving cannot be uniformly applied. While individuals have distinct needs, preferences, habits, and motives, this study seeks to explore the typical determinants of household saving in Tanzania. Data was collected through questionnaires administered to the heads of four hundred (400) households across twenty two (22) wards in Mbeya City. The study examines saving as a function of several variables including age, sex, education attainment, marital status, monthly income, number of dependents and social influence.  Using logistic regression models, the results indicate that monthly income is the most significant determinant of saving, followed by education attainment, number of dependents, social influence, sex and age. Despite its importance, saving practices remain suboptimal. Based on these findings, the study recommends that saving advocacy should begin at the family and school levels to increase the proportion of individuals who actively save

    No full text
This paper explores the growing trend of body enhancement surgeries in Nigeria, focusing on its evolution, motivations, challenges, and the government\u27s responses and shortcomings. By examining the changing dynamics of body enhancement practices, the paper aims to contribute to the broader conversation surrounding body image, identity, and the societal pressuresinfluencing individuals\u27 choices about their physical appearance. Using a qualitative methodology, the study gathered data from both primary and secondary sources. Primary data was collected through oral interviews and observations, while secondary data was collected from books, newspapers, and journals. The findings reveal that both men and women undergo body enhancement surgeries, although it is more prevalent among women. It further found that body modification is an age-old practice which has taken on new dimensions in recent years due to factors like body shaming, peer pressure, media influences, global beauty trends, and the desire for the "perfect" body. This has led to a rise in botched surgeries and even fatalities, especially when performed by non-professionals or quacks. The government\u27s response to these issues has been relatively passive, allowing the problem to grow and enabling the entry of unqualified practitioners. The study also highlights a debate between modernity and tradition, with proponents of modernity seeing body enhancement as a contemporary trend while traditionalists advocate for embracing one\u27s natural body. The findings emphasise the importance of fostering critical discussions on the consequences of body enhancement surgeries, promoting healthy selfimage, and accepting diverse body types in Nigerian society
