The Flipped classroom in the learning of korfball in fifth and sixth grade
The Flipped classroom (FC) model has come into widespread use in recent years. However, there are few studies showing the improvement of academic results with the implementation of this model, particularly in the field of Physical Education and, even more specifically, in Primary Education. The main goal of this research, which is focused on the third cycle of Primary Education (fifth and sixth grades), is to compare the results of a didactic proposal for the teaching of Korfball via an FC model with those of another group (control). Data were collected with three instruments and at three points in the academic term. Results show significant differences in Korfball performance and, more specifically, in the rules and the application of game strategy during game play, when students with FC scored higher. In terms of gender, Korfball seems to minimize the differences in the results of assessment between boys and girls. This study could be useful for teachers wishing to implement new proposals in the Physical Education classroom and, additionally, for researchers interested in studying of the benefits of FC and the application of Korfball in Primary Education
The Role of Traditions in Psychology (and Other Sciences). Comments on Research traditions in social sciences and their methodological rationales
Influence of flipped classroom methodology on the self-concept of primary education students
Flipped classroom is an educational methodology whereby students complete the most theoretical part of a lesson at home, usually by viewing educational videos or using other similar tools. This allows them to dedicate more class time to developing higher order thinking skills via the completion of practical tasks. Since its introduction in the classroom few years ago, the number of primary education teachers using the method has increased steadily, but teachers sometimes lack reliable data on its effectiveness. The objective of this research was to address this by analysing how the methodology affects primary education students’ self-concept. To this end, data were collected on 822 students (Age = 10.84; SD = .873), who were divided into a control group (437 students) and an experimental group (385 students). The experimental group underwent a 7-month flipped classroom intervention. Both groups completed the AF-5 scale before and after the intervention. The results suggest, firstly, that the flipped classroom methodology neither significantly improved nor significantly worsened any of the dimensions of self-concept more than the group that did not apply this methodology. Meanwhile, however, both groups did show improvements in the social, emotional and family dimensions of their self-concept. The paper concludes with a discussion of these outcomes and suggestions for future research topics.
The impact of the flipped classroom in higher education: a case study
Some of the new teaching models that have emerged, including the Flipped Classroom, can be key to reversing traditional educational practices. However, it is necessary to analyse in detail how these educational experiences are being implemented in the classroom, and how this is affecting students\u27 learning. The present research uses a case study methodology. The objective is to analyse a higher education course taught using flipped classroom methodology and to assess the impact of the implementation of said pedagogical model on the students’ formative process. The study used a data collection instrument based on a structured interview and a data analysis strategy based on the Grounded Theory. In general, the results show that students tend to express positive opinions and a good degree of satisfaction with their experiences with this pedagogical method. Most students confirm that the method successfully stimulates cooperative learning and favours the practical acquisition of knowledge, stimulating in turn the development of a series of key competences in the educational process, along with capabilities such as organisation, autonomy and responsibility, among others
Shades of Foods: Prevalence and correlates of food addiction
Background: Growing evidence suggests that certain foods have addictive properties. Food addiction has sparked interest within the scientific community. The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of food addiction to examine their differential characteristics, and the association between food addiction symptoms and physical and psychological variables, such as eating-related behaviours, body mass index (BMI), and personality traits (e.g., types of narcissism).Method: The sample consisted of 208 participants (mean age = 26.82 ± 7.89 years; BMI = 27.53 ± 12.21 kg/m2; 80.3% female; 79.3% White). Participants completed a web-based self-report survey of food addiction containing the questionnaires to measure these constructs. The main scale used as an outcome variable was the Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS).Results: 14.4% of participants met the YFAS diagnostic criteria for potential food addiction. Individuals who met the criteria displayed greater food craving, more frequent consumption of sugary foods, the tendency to develop eating disorders, and more negative attitudes toward and thoughts of physical appearance. Those categorised as food addicts also exhibited a lower level of self-esteem and grandiose narcissism, and a high level of hypersensitive narcissism. Food craving and body image issues were associated with the severity of food addiction. Conclusions: The findings of this investigation supported the construct of food addiction as both, addictive behaviour and behavioural addiction. Furthermore, it was suggested that this potential addiction is related to overweight and obese individual young females
A comparative analysis of the processing speed between video game players and non-players
Speed is an essential cognitive skill in our day to day life, as such, it has been extensively studied. The uncertainty of whether the processing speed can be increased with appropriate training-within one individual, across a range of tasks, and without compromising accuracy- remains to this day. The aim of the present study was to analyse the processing speed of video game players and compare it to non-video game players to see if there are any significant differences between these two groups. To this end, a questionnaire on gaming habits and sociodemographic data, and two tests that evaluate the processing speed were administered to a sample of 50 university students from different degrees. The scores were then compared and, taking into account the possible errors, results showed that video game players have a shorter reaction time than non-video game players and that neither of the groups made more mistakes than the other
Escaping from the English classroom. Who will get out first?
The aim of this study is to present an innovative teaching proposal implemented in the English classroom in a Translation Degree that can be replicated in other disciplines, and to analyse the potential for an activity like this one to have a very positive effect on the way students engage with and learn a second language. The study was based on the hypothesis that the use of an escape room, chosen here from a range of possible gamified activities, could enhance students’ motivation to learn a second language and serve as an enjoyable and cooperative way to help them develop oral and writing skills. This paper opens with a review of relevant research in the field of English language learning and analyses the potential benefits of introducing gamification techniques to the classroom. The next section details the method used in the study, including information about the instrument, the participants and the academic context. The activity implemented is also described. After that, the results of the study are presented and illustrated with examples from the data. Finally, some implications of the study are discussed
Suspended lunge exercise: assessment of forces in different positions and paces
The forces exerted on the suspension device have been examined in upper body exercises, like push-ups or inverted raw. For this reason, this aim of this study was to determine the effect of body position, contraction patterns and pace on force production by the lower limb during the execution of suspended lunge exercises. Ten physically active male university students (n = 10, age = 23.70±2.83 years old) performed sixteen suspended lunges in four different positions and three different paces (60, 70, and 80 beats per minute). A load cell was used to assess the forces exert on the suspension device. Force data were analyzed with the factorial repeated measurements (ANOVA). A significant main effect for position in concentric force (p= .000), average force (p= .002), and for frequency in peak force (p= .004) were found. Peak force was significantly higher for dynamic contraction type in all positions in comparison with isometric suspended lunge. In conclusion, a higher feet distance, frequencies around 70 beats per minute and the dynamic contraction type enhanced the forces exert on the suspension strap when performed the lunge exercise
