    Identifying HRV patterns in ECG signals as early markers of dementia

    The appearance of Artificial Intelligence (IA) has improved our ability to process large amount of data. These tools are particularly interesting in medical contexts, in order to evaluate the variables from patients’ screening analysis and disentangle the information that they contain. We propose in this work a novel method for evaluating the role of electrocardiogram (ECG) signals in the human cognitive decline. This framework offers a complete solution for all the steps in the classification pipeline, from the preprocessing of the raw signals to the final classification stage. Numerous metrics are computed from the original data in terms of different domains (time, frequency, etc.), and dimensionality is reduced through a Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The resulting characteristics are used as inputs of different classifiers (linear/non-linear Support Vector Machines, Random Forest, etc.) to determine the amount of information that they contain. Our system yielded an area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve of 0.80 identifying Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) patients, showing that ECG contain crucial information for predicting the appearance of this pathology. These results are specially relevant given the fact that ECG acquisition is much more affordable and less invasive than brain imaging used in most of these intelligent systems, allowing our method to be used in environments of any socioeconomic range

    A critical and comprehensive review of the current status of 17β-estradiol hormone remediation through adsorption technology

    Even at low concentrations, steroid hormones pose a significant threat to ecosystem health and are classified as micropollutants. Among these, 17β-estradiol (molecular formula: C18H24O2; pKa = 10.46; Log Kow = 4.01; solubility in water = 3.90 mg L−1 at 27 °C; molecular weight: 272.4 g mol−1) is extensively studied as an endocrine disruptor due to its release through natural pathways and widespread use in conventional medicine. 17β-estradiol (E2) is emitted by various sources, such as animal and human excretions, hospital and veterinary clinic effluents, and treatment plants. In aquatic biota, it can cause issues ranging from the feminization of males to inhibiting plant growth. This review aims to identify technologies for remediating E2 in water, revealing that materials like graphene oxides, nanocomposites, and carbonaceous materials are commonly used for adsorption. The pH of the medium, especially in acidic to neutral conditions, affects efficiency, and ambient temperature (298 K) supports the process. The Langmuir and Freundlich models aptly describe isothermal studies, with interactions being of a low-energy, physical nature. Adsorption faces limitations when other ions coexist in the solution. Hybrid treatments exhibit high removal efficiency. To mitigate global E2 pollution, establishing national and international standards with detailed guidelines for advanced treatment systems is crucial. Despite significant advancements in optimizing technologies by the scientific community, there remains a considerable gap in their societal application, primarily due to economic and sustainable factors. Therefore, further studies are necessary, including conducting batch experiments with these adsorbents for large-scale treatment along with economic analyses of the production process

    User Profile for the Internet of Things based on Ontologies

    Determinar el contexto en el que se encuentra el usuario es clave para personalizar los servicios en Internet de las cosas. Por lo tanto, se requiere un mecanismo genérico, semántico e interoperable que gestione el perfil del usuario. Se propone un mecanismo de gestión de perfil de usuario para IoT que utiliza ontologías para modelar las preferencias del usuario y su contexto según su ubicación y las actividades que están ejecutando. Esto permite a los usuarios establecer preferencias en objetos inteligentes que crean servicios personalizados con una intervención humana mínima. La metodología utilizada en la creación de esta ontología de perfil de usuario facilita la construcción rápida de un modelo formal y evolutivo. Para validar la solución, se adoptó un estudio de caso que incorporó usuarios reales y midió su capacidad para personalizar los servicios proporcionados. Los resultados sugieren que la ontología ofrece una buena solución para este tipo de escenario que adapta sus servicios a las características y el contexto del usuario. Las pruebas verificaron que los servicios se ajustaron automáticamente en un tiempo aceptable (52 segundos) en comparación con los ajustes manuales que podrían requerir varios minutos.Determining the context in which the user is located is key to personalizing services in the Internet of Things. Therefore, a generic, semantic, interoperable mechanism that manages the user profile is required. A user profile management mechanism for IoT is proposed that uses ontologies to model user preferences and their context according to their location and the activities they are executing. This enables users to establish preferences on smart objects that create personalized services with minimal human intervention. The methodology used in creating this user profile ontology facilitates the rapid building of a formal, evolutionary model. To validate the solution, a case study adopted a semantic interaction scenario of smart objects, which incorporated real users and measured their ability to personalize the services provided. The results suggest that ontology offers a good solution for this kind of scenario that adapts its services to user characteristics and context.     Green synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles from sida acuta leaf extract for antibacterial and antioxidant applications, and catalytic degradation of dye through the use of convolutional neural network

    This study synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) using a novel green approach, with Sida acuta leaf extract as a capping and reducing agent to initiate nucleation and structure formation. The innovation of this study lies in demonstrating the originality of utilizing zinc oxide nanoparticles for antibacterial action, antioxidant potential, and catalytic degradation of Congo red dye. This unique approach harnesses eco-friendly methods to initiate nucleation and structure formation. The synthesized nanoparticles' structure and conformation were characterized using UV–vis (λmax = 280 nm), X-ray, atomic force microscopy, SEM, HR-TEM and FTIR. The antibacterial activity of the Nps was tested against Pseudomonas sp, Klebsiella sp, Staphylococcus aureus, and E. coli, demonstrating efficacy. The nanoparticles exhibited unique properties, with a crystallite size of 20 nm (XRD), a surface roughness of 2.5 nm (AFM), and a specific surface area of 60 m2/g (SEM). A Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) was effectively employed to accurately classify and analyze microscopic images of green-synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles. This research revealed their exceptional antioxidant potential, with an average DPPH scavenging rate of 80% at a concentration of 0.05 mg/mL. Additionally, zeta potential measurements indicated a stable net negative surface charge of approximately −12.2 mV. These quantitative findings highlight the promising applications of green-synthesized ZnO NPs in healthcare, materials science, and environmental remediation. The ZnO nanoparticles exhibited catalytic capabilities for dye degradation, and the degradation rate was determined using UV spectroscopy. Key findings of the study encompass the green synthesis of versatile zinc oxide nanoparticles, demonstrating potent antibacterial action, antioxidant capabilities, and catalytic dye degradation potential. These nanoparticles offer multifaceted solutions with minimal environmental impact, addressing challenges in various fields, from healthcare to environmental remediation

    Location of ambulances for Cucuta's emergency medical system

    Introducción. La localización de las bases de ambulancias es una decisión estratégica en el sistema de emergencias médicas (SEM), que impacta el tiempo de respuesta y la probabilidad de salvar vidas o dejar secuelas en los pacientes que sufren accidentes de tránsito o crisis de una enfermedad. Objetivo. El propósito de la investigación fue proponer la localización de bases de ambulancias para el SEM, que mejore la oportunidad en la atención pre-hospitalaria en Cúcuta.   Metodología. Primero, se utilizó el método del centro de gravedad para segmentar la ciudad en sub-cuadrantes y determinar ubicaciones alternativas. Segundo, se empleó el sistema de calificación de factores de la localización para evaluar las ubicaciones alternativas. Tercero, se diseñó un modelo programación lineal entera que determinó la localización óptima de ambulancias, que minimiza el número de bases para atender los accidentes de tránsito en un tiempo de respuesta de 8 minutos o menos. Finalmente, Para determinar los tiempos de respuesta se desarrolló un código en Python que utilizó el servicio web Direction API de Google Maps. Resultados. Se propusieron dos alternativas óptimas de localización, las cuales reducirían el tiempo de respuesta promedio de la situación actual de 10,96 minutos a 5,39 y 5,72, equivalentes a una mejora del 50,82% y 47,81%, respectivamente, y el porcentaje de pacientes atendidos en un tiempo de respuesta de 8 minutos o menos se incrementaría a 85,19% y 78,84%, mejorando el 30,82% de la situación actual. Conclusiones. Se sugiere la segunda propuesta de localización que consideró cuatro bases, porque facilitaría al SEM el control y la gestión logística de las ambulancias, y mejoraría la oportunidad en la atención pre-hospitalaria en Cúcuta.Introduction. The location of ambulance bases is a strategic decision in the emergency medical system (EMS), which impacts the response time and the probability of saving lives or leaving sequelae in patients who suffer traffic accidents or disease crises. Objective. The research proposed the location of ambulance bases for EMS to improve the timeliness of pre-hospital care in Cucuta.    Methodology. First, this research used the center of gravity method to segment the city into sub-quadrants and determine alternative locations. Second, the location factors scoring method was employed to evaluate alternative sites. Third, an integer linear programming model was designed to select the optimal location of ambulances in Cucuta that minimizes the number of ambulance bases to care for traffic accidents in a response time of 8 minutes or less. Finally, a code was developed using Python 3.8.2 and the Google Maps Direction API web service to determine the response times. Results. This paper proposed two optimal location alternatives, reducing the average response time from 10.96 minutes to 5.39 and 5.72, an improvement of 50.82% and 47.81%, respectively. In addition, the patients cared for in a response time of 8 minutes or less would increase to 85.19% and 78.84%, improving the 30.82% of the current situation. Conclusions. The second location proposal, which considered four bases, was suggested because it would facilitate EMS control and logistics management of ambulances and enhance the timeliness of pre-hospital care in Cúcuta

    Computer architecture for industrial training evaluation

    Companies have tried to innovate in their training processes to increase their productivity indicators, reduce equipment maintenance costs, and improve the work environment. The use of Augmented Reality (AR) has been one of the implemented strategies to upgrade training processes, since it optimizes, through User Interface (UI) Design, experiences designed for users (UX) that are focused on education and training contexts. This research describes the definition and implementation of an IT architecture based on the ISO/IEC/IEEE 42010 standard using the Zachman and Kruchten frameworks. The methodological proposal presents an architecture seen from a business perspective, taking into account the strategic and technological components of the organization under a strategic alignment approach. The result is a six-layer architecture: The Government Strategy Layer (1) that accounts for the strategic component; the Business Layer (2) that presents the business management perspective; the Information Layer (4) that defines the metrics system: efficiency through task time, effectiveness through tasks completed, and satisfaction with overall satisfaction. In the Data Layer (4), the data collected with the metrics are structured in an industrial scenario with a cylinder turning process on a Winston Lathe. The experiment was carried out with two groups of 272 participants. In the Systems and Applications Layer (5), two applications were designed: a web client and a mobile application with augmented reality, and finally, the Networks and Infrastructure Layer (6), which delivers the two functional applications. The architecture validation was carried out using the mobile application. The analysis of the results showed a significance value of less than 0.001 in the three indicators: efficiency, effectiveness, and satisfaction in the Levene test and Student’s t-test. To corroborate the results, a test of equality of means with the Mann–Whitney U was carried out, showing that the three indicators presented significantly different values in the two experimental groups of this study. Thus, the group trained with the application obtained better results in the three indicators. The proposed architecture is adaptable to other training contexts. Information, data, and systems and application layers allowed for the exchange of training processes so that the augmented reality application is updated according to the new requirements

    A perspective of household waste collection methods

    The implementation of a household waste collection system has a significant impact on the recycling rates of various materials and the costs of a waste management system. Frequently, information is found with case studies that analyze the implementation of these systems and their results in various regions of the world, but the information on the previous procedure that must be carried out is quite scarce. In the present study, schemes are created through which they seek to analyze and establish the steps prior to the implementation of a system and the determining factors for its success. Fundamental aspects are highlighted such as the recognition of the origin of the system or the reasons why it is implemented, if it is mandatory or voluntary, the characterization of the waste flow, the environmental, economic and social limits of the system, demographic study of the region, the form of billing, the communication strategies with which the system will socialize the community and the choice of the collection method. The curbside method contributes to a higher collection rate given the comfort that the user has by having the containers at home; and in the drop-off method, the investment in vehicles and containers as well as the operating costs are much lower

    Riesgo suicida en mujeres privadas de la libertad en el centro de rehabilitación femenino “El Buen Pastor” de la ciudad de Barranquilla

    El suicidio es una causa de muerte significativa en jóvenes y tiene un impacto devastador en sus familiares. En entornos penitenciarios, las tasas de suicidio aumentan debido a factores contextuales, sociales y biológicos. Este estudio, realizado en la cárcel “El Buen Pastor” en Colombia, busca evaluar este riesgo en las reclusas mediante el uso del "Riesgo suicida de Plutchik". La metodología fue cuantitativa, con diseño no experimental de corte transversal y de alcance descriptivo. Se aplicaron pruebas a 109 mujeres, representando el 83,8% de la población carcelaria. Los resultados muestran un 20,2% de riesgo suicida leve y una alta prevalencia de riesgo en mujeres involucradas en delitos violentos. Se concluye que el riesgo suicida es leve y el tipo de delito y la condición de tener hijos influyen significativamente en el riesgo suicidaSuicide is a significant cause of death among young people and has a devastating impact on their families. In penitentiary settings, suicide rates increase due to contextual, social, and biological factors. This study, conducted at the "El Buen Pastor" prison in Colombia, aims to assess the suicide risk among female inmates using Plutchik's Suicide Risk Assessment. The methodology was quantitative, with a non-experimental, cross-sectional design and descriptive scope. Tests were administered to 109 women, representing 83.8% of the prison population. The results show that 20.2% of the participants had a mild suicide risk, with a high prevalence of risk among women involved in violent crimes.     Analysis of energy performance of intermediate municipalities: case of Sabanalarga in the Atlantic department of Colombia

    Municipal Energy Review enables the analysis of a municipality's energy performance, encompassing quantifiable energy efficiency, energy utilization, and consumption outcomes. This study embarks on an energy review of Sabanalarga municipality in Colombia, scrutinizing its energy performance spanning from 2010 to 2021 as a preliminary step toward designing a Municipal Energy Management System. The methodology employed encompasses three stages: examining energy utilization, identifying significant energy uses (SEUs) along with their improvement opportunities, and estimating future energy consumption. Results reveal that the transportation and residential sectors emerge as the primary energy consumers despite the municipality's economic dependence on agriculture. The municipality's energy performance has witnessed a decline in recent years, primarily due to the impact of the “Coronavirus SARS-Cov-2 (COVID-19)” on the local economy and residential energy consumption. The energy action plan, structured around SEUs and founded upon identified improvement opportunities, paints a promising picture for the short-term future to enhance energy performance indicators, provided that the proposed strategies and activities are implemented within the designated timeframe
