Biological effects of a copper-based fungicide on the fruit fly, drosophila melanogaster

    No full text
The increased consumption of pesticides can have a negative environmental impact by increasing the essential metals to toxic levels. Bordasul® is a commonly used fungicide in Brazil and it is composed of 20% Cu, 10% sulfur, and 3.0% calcium. The study of fungicides in vivo in non-target model organisms can predict their environmental impact more broadly. The Drosophila melanogaster is a unique model due to its ease of handling and maintenance. Here, the potential toxicity of Bordasul® was investigated by assessing the development, survival, and behavior of exposed flies. Exposure to Bordasul® impaired the development (p < 0.01) and caused a significant reduction in memory retention (p < 0.05) and locomotor ability (p < 0.001). Fungicides are needed to assure the world’s food demand; however, Bordasul® was highly toxic to D. melanogaster. Therefore, Bordasul® may be potentially toxic to non-target invertebrates and new environmentally-safe biofertilizers have to be developed to preserve the biota

Adsorption of the rare earth elements cerium, lanthanum, and neodymium onto ZSM-5 zeolite: A statistical physics approach

    No full text
The recovery of rare earth elements (REE) is essential to meet the growing demand for these resources and promote the reuse of available resources. This study investigated the potential of ZSM-5 zeolite in the recovery of trivalent ions of cerium, lanthanum and neodymium under conditions of pH 6 and temperatures between 298 and 328 K. REE equilibrium isotherms were analyzed using five statistical physics models. The results indicate that removing all REE occurs predominantly in monolayers, as these models showed better prediction performance (coefficient of determination > 0.97 and mean squared error cerium > lanthanum. The adsorption energies indicate that the process occurred mainly due to physical forces since all energy values are below 40 kJ mol−1. The study’s results led to the proposal of a mechanism for the adsorption of REE on ZSM-5 zeolite, which highlights the predominance of electrostatic interactions and complex formation, which result in the formation of a monolayer on the adsorbent’s surface

Relación entre el tipo, frecuencia e intensidad de actividad física y el nivel de estrés de los estudiantes universitarios en Barranquilla

    No full text
In the current context, the importance of physical activity for physical and mental health has been highlighted. Various research has shown that higher levels of physical activity are linked to greater well-being and a lower incidence of depressive symptoms, anxiety and stress. Despite this, there is a paucity of specific studies addressing the relationship between physical activity and stress in university students, especially in the psychology population. This research focuses on exploring the relationship between the type, frequency and intensity of physical activity and the level of stress in university students in Barranquilla. The lack of experimental research at the national level is evident, highlighting the need to address this knowledge gap. The proposed methodology is a qualitative positivist approach, using a correlational design. The sample will be selected in a representative manner, including students from various educational institutions and academic programs in Barranquilla. Data collection will be carried out through surveys and questionnaires, evaluating the preferred type of exercise, the time dedicated to physical activity and the level of perceived stress. On the other hand, we seek to contribute to the understanding of how physical activity can influence stress levels in university students, especially in a post-pandemic context. It is expected that the results obtained will provide valuable information for the design of well-being policies and specific intervention programs for this population in Barranquilla, thus filling a gap in the local scientific literature.Lista de tablas 9 -- Planteamiento del problema 12 -- Definición del problema12 -- Formulación de la pregunta problema14 -- Objetivos 14 -- Objetivo general 14 -- Objetivo específicos14 -- Justificación 14 -- Marco teórico 18 -- Antecedentes 18 -- Fundamentación teórica 21 -- Hipótesis 21 -- Metodología 22 -- Población y muestra 22 -- Instrumentos y técnicas23 -- Inventario de SISCO 23 -- Procedimiento 27 -- Proceso para la recolección de la muestra 27 -- Resultados 29 -- Datos sociodemográficos 29 -- Discusión 48 -- Recomendaciones 49 -- Conclusiones 50 -- Referencias 51 -- Anexos 56PsicologíaPregrad

An AI-based multiphase framework for improving the mechanical ventilation availability in emergency departments during respiratory disease seasons: a case study

    No full text
Background Shortages of mechanical ventilation have become a constant problem in Emergency Departments (EDs), thereby affecting the timely deployment of medical interventions that counteract the severe health complications experienced during respiratory disease seasons. It is then necessary to count on agile and robust methodological approaches predicting the expected demand loads to EDs while supporting the timely allocation of ventilators. In this paper, we propose an integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Discrete-event Simulation (DES) to design effective interventions ensuring the high availability of ventilators for patients needing these devices. Methods First, we applied Random Forest (RF) to estimate the mechanical ventilation probability of respiratoryaffected patients entering the emergency wards. Second, we introduced the RF predictions into a DES model to diagnose the response of EDs in terms of mechanical ventilator availability. Lately, we pretested two different interventions suggested by decision-makers to address the scarcity of this resource. A case study in a European hospital group was used to validate the proposed methodology. Results The number of patients in the training cohort was 734, while the test group comprised 315. The sensitivity of the AI model was 93.08% (95% confidence interval, [88.46 −96.26%]), whilst the specificity was 85.45% [77.45 −91.45%]. On the other hand, the positive and negative predictive values were 91.62% (86.75 −95.13%) and 87.85% (80.12 −93.36%). Also, the Receiver Operator Characteristic (ROC) curve plot was 95.00% (89.25 −100%). Finally, the median waiting time for mechanical ventilation was decreased by 17.48% after implementing a new resource capacity strategy. Conclusions Combining AI and DES helps healthcare decision-makers to elucidate interventions shortening the waiting times for mechanical ventilators in EDs during respiratory disease epidemics and pandemics

Deep convolutional neural network for weld defect classification in radiographic images

    No full text
The quality of welds is critical to the safety of structures in construction, so early detection of irregularities is crucial. Advances in machine vision inspection technologies, such as deep learning models, have improved the detection of weld defects. This paper presents a new CNN model based on ResNet50 to classify four types of weld defects in radiographic images: crack, pore, non-penetration, and no defect. Stratified cross-validation, data augmentation, and regularization were used to improve generalization and avoid over-fitting. The model was tested on three datasets, RIAWELC, GDXray, and a private dataset of low image quality, obtaining an accuracy of 98.75 %, 90.255 %, and 75.83 %, respectively. The model proposed in this paper achieves high accuracies on different datasets and constitutes a valuable tool to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of quality control processes in the welding industry. Moreover, experimental tests show that the proposed approach performs well on even low-resolution images
