Background: Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune disease characterized by non-scaring hair loss and preservation of hair follicles. The information available on disease course, and clinical features of AA is scarce worldwide, and almost nonexistent in Colombia. Objective: To determine the clinical and sociodemographic characteristics of patients diagnosed with AA who presented to a dermatology consultation in five Colombian cities. Material and methods: This was a retrospective and multicenter study on data from an ongoing National Registry of Alopecia Areata in Colombia (RENAAC) collected in Bogota, Cali, Cartagena, Barranquilla, and Medellin, Colombia from March 2022 through April 2023. Data was recorded in a standardized form by trained physicians. The variables were expressed as measures of central tendency and dispersion, and absolute and relative frequencies. Results: A total of 562 patients were included, 59.4% of whom were women, aged between 15 and 49 years (63.9%) with a mean disease course of 1.7 years. The most common finding was multiple plaque (53.2%), the predominant AA subtype was patchy (71.4%), and 29.5% of the patients had a past dermatological history, 18.3% had a past endocrinological history, and 8.9% had a past psychiatric history. The treatments most widely used were steroid injections (76.4%), 5% topical minoxidil (46.4%), followed by high-potency corticosteroids (42.5%). Study limitations and conclusions: AA was slightly predominant in women. As seen in other populations, this disease had an earlier onset in men vs women. Presentation in pediatric age was uncommon. The previous history of other dermatological diseases was checked in almost one third of the patients. Analysis of the co-presentation of AA with other autoimmune diseases is biased due to excluding patients with systemic erythematous lupus from the study

Design and feasibility study for the evaluation of an Agrovoltaics generation system: Case of Temuco in Chile
Chile is a country that has had large renewable energy resources in recent years, and it has demonstrated a commitment to the use of clean energy. However, most solar energy projects are located in northern Chile, neglecting other areas, such as the southern part of the country, where the photovoltaic energy industry has the potential to thrive. This is the case in the Araucanía region, particularly in Temuco, which has diverse agricultural activity. However, being a remote area without access to the electrical grid, it relies on generation sources like oil. This article, a research product, aims to demonstrate the functionality that can be added to agricultural land by combining it with solar parks. To achieve this, an agrovoltaic system was estimated for a plot of land in the agricultural zone of Temuco. This system will serve as a sample of the integration between photovoltaic infrastructure and the agricultural industry for those interested in installing it

This study examines the representations and practices of peacebuilding within the Movement of Children, Adolescents, and Youth Peace Managers, using a mixed-methods approach. The data were analyzed with the EVOC 2003 program using "Prototypical Analysis," identifying core and peripheral elements from the evoked terms to organize the content of the studied representations. Additionally, Atlas.ti version 24 software was used. The results reveal that the social representations of Peace Managers regarding concepts such as “Peace,” “Peace Managers,” “Peace Practices,” and “Peace Agreements” are based on fundamental values that guide their collective and individual actions. Among these values, love, mutual help, respect, solidarity, and commitment stand out as pillars in their community work and personal development. Peace practices are promoted through community development, active participation in social transformation, and mediation in the peaceful resolution of conflicts. The movement also focuses on value-based education, promoting active listening and forming citizens committed to human rights. A variation in the understanding of peace is observed based on roles within the movement. Mentors tend to have a more formal and structured view of peace, while, in contrast, the "semilleros" (seedlings) have a view that relates more to listening, fun, and participation as recipients and participants in specific activities.
Development of a Machine Learning (ML)-based computational model to estimate the engineering properties of Portland Cement Concrete (PCC)
Portland cement concrete (PCC) is the construction material most used worldwide. Hence, its proper characterization is fundamental for the daily-basis engineering practice. Nonetheless, the experimental measurements of the PCC’s engineering properties (i.e., Poisson’s Ratio -v-, Elastic Modulus -E-, Compressive Strength -ComS-, and Tensile Strength -TenS-) consume considerable amounts of time and financial resources. Therefore, the development of high-precision indirect methods is fundamental. Accordingly, this research proposes a computational model based on deep neural networks (DNNs) to simultaneously predict the v, E, ComS, and TenS. For this purpose, the Long-Term Pavement Performance database was employed as the data source. In this regard, the mix design parameters of the PCC are adopted as input variables. The performance of the DNN model was evaluated with 1:1 lines, goodness-of-fit parameters, Shapley additive explanations assessments, and running time analysis. The results demonstrated that the proposed DNN model exhibited an exactitude higher than 99.8%, with forecasting errors close to zero (0). Consequently, the machine learning-based computational model designed in this investigation is a helpful tool for estimating the PCC’s engineering properties when laboratory tests are not attainable. Thus, the main novelty of this study is creating a robust model to determine the v, E, ComS, and TenS by solely considering the mix design parameters. Likewise, the central contribution to the state-of-the-art achieved by the present research effort is the public launch of the developed computational tool through an open-access GitHub repository, which can be utilized by engineers, designers, agencies, and other stakeholders
Human management control systems on construction firms amidst COVID-19
BACKGROUND:The COVID-19 pandemic continues to endure in the construction industry. While many businesses worldwide have adapted to working from home or home-based offices, this is impractical in this sector as building activity is conducted on-site, which creates difficulties for employees in adapting to the post-pandemic setting. OBJECTIVE:This article analyzes how the pandemic has changed and affected construction firms’ human management control systems dimensions. We addressed, amidst the pandemic, how work is being performed and its effects on employees and businesses. METHODS:In this analytical research, we used chain referral sampling to perform an in-depth interview study with top administrators of different construction firms in Colombia, and we used inferential statistics for our data analysis. RESULTS:Results showed potential sources of low efficiency and minimal control of resources, including lack of communication with employees, lack of recognition systems, centralized decision-making, and disconnection between business objectives and financial requirements. CONCLUSIONS:Construction firms must ensure workers understand the project goals adequately and be empowered to make on-site decisions provided a training program is offered. Organizations ought to connect their strategic business goals with financial requirements; these must be regularly updated and modified as the economic and labor force scenario evolves

Hospital capacity planning under conditions of uncertainty
Hospital management must adapt to changes in its environment, where a balance between care and administrative processes predominates, requiring efficient planning. The research aims to propose a procedure for long-term capacity planning under conditions of uncertainty in hospital organizations. A four-stage, quantitative descriptive methodology was designed, including tools such as expert selection, patient flow representation through the different treatment stages, demand forecasting, and capacity calculation. Among the main results, the capacity of the groups related by the diagnosis of the surgical type defined in the service was determined, the operating room was identified as a limiting resource, as well as the percentage of utilization, obtaining 112 % in the operating rooms and 35.58 % of the beds. Among the limitations of the proposed procedure is the level of precision of the capacity calculations (medium-low), typical of long-term planning; however, it enables the heads of hospital government services to propose corrective actions to capacity problems based on a structured methodological procedure that shows how to do the following
This thesis proposes the development of a "Business Plan for the creation of an interactive guidance tool for the presentation of photovoltaic solar energy projects in Colombia," aimed at facilitating the transition towards renewable energy sources, specifically photovoltaic solar energy, in a context where dependency on fossil fuels remains a significant barrier. In light of global warming and the urgent need to adopt clean energy, the study highlights the lack of an efficient business model to facilitate the implementation of solar projects, particularly in the residential sector and for small and medium-sized enterprises (PYMEs). Through a literature review, the conceptual design of the integration procedure for regulatory requirements, and the development of the business model and financial sustainability, this work presents an innovative solution that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) and collaborative apps to guide and simplify the presentation of solar projects. The analysis includes identifying a strong target market, composed of businesses, government entities, and citizens interested in adopting renewable energy. The study concludes that although Colombia has a solid regulatory framework, continuous efforts are needed to promote the use of clean energy, primarily through the simplification of regulatory processes. It demonstrates that the proposed interactive tool project is commercially viable, with high profitability potential in the medium and long term, supported by the growing demand for solar solutions. Moreover, the proposed model has a strong social responsibility focus, aligning with government objectives and contributing to the reduction of carbon footprints, thus promoting more inclusive and sustainable economic and social development. In summary, this project presents an innovative alternative that can facilitate the widespread adoption of photovoltaic solar energy in Colombia, advancing the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy matrix.
