Community preferences for participating in ecotourism: a case study in a coastal lagoon in Colombia

    No full text
Ecotourism is grounded in the concept of socio-environmental sustainability. However, the literature needs more clarification on the determinants of ex ante determinants for community participation in ecotourism in coastal lagoon ecosystems. This paper aims to analyze community-based ecosystem management through participation in ecotourism. After a case study design, a survey-like method was used to identify the social willingness to engage in ecotourism and the benefits that the participants preferred as a result of participating. The results show that most respondents believe that ecotourism would promote environmental conservation in the area and also considered their participation essential to ensure the success of ecotourism. Therefore, this research emphasizes the importance of identifying local perceptions of ecotourism before its implementation, evaluates the willingness of locals to participate in this strategy to highlight community agency, and investigates how participation could be achieved. These results are useful for future research and studies on the willingness to take part in ecotourism studies and the understanding of the relationship between society and ecosystems

Gaussian similarity-based adaptive dynamic label assignment for tiny object detection

    No full text
Benefiting from the advanced deep learning techniques, significant achievements have been made in generic object detection. Tiny object detection (TOD) is a challenging task in computer vision due to the low resolution, insufficient geometric cues, and high noise levels. A recent trend for detectors is introducing more granular label assignment strategies to provide promising supervision information for classification and regression. However, most previous Intersection-Over-Union (IoU) based methods suffer from two main drawbacks, including (1) low tolerance of IoU for bounding box deviations in tiny objects and (2) deficient guidance for optimization caused by inter-sample and intra-sample imbalance. We propose two novel components to address these problems: the Gaussian probabilistic distribution-based fuzzy similarity metric (GPM) and the adaptive dynamic anchor mining strategy (ADAS). GPM aims to address the issue of inaccurate similarity measurement between small bounding boxes and pre-defined anchors, providing a more accurate basis for label assignment. ADAS adopts a dynamically adjusted strategy for label assignment to address the distribution bias between positive and negative samples, ensuring that the label assignment is consistent with the distribution of objects in the image. Extensive experiments are conducted on AI-TODv2 and other tiny object detection datasets to evaluate the proposed ADASGPM method’s performance. The results demonstrate that incorporating ADAS-GPM into an anchorbased object detector yields significant outperformance over state-of-the-art methods on the challenging AI-TODv2 benchmark. The proposed ADAS-GPM method exhibits good results, clearly demonstrating its validity and potential

Objectives. This study aimed to estimate the direct medical costs of patients with post COVID-19 condition in a Colombian insurance company with more than 2.5 million affiliates. Methods. We conducted a bottom-up cost-of-illness study of adults with persistent symptoms after at least three months of hospital discharge due to COVID-19. We surveyed patients that were hospitalized between March 2020 and August 2021. We asked about healthcare resource utilization (HCRU), which included laboratories and images, medications, consults, rehospitalizations, and others, associated with post COVID-19 condition. The answers were verified using the company’s outpatient and inpatient service authorization records. Costs were estimated from the third payer perspective and expressed in American dollars using an exchange rate of 1USD=3,743COP.Results.Weincluded202participants,51.5=3,743COP. Results. We included 202 participants, 51.5% were male, mean age of 55.6 years old, 49% had a comorbidity (41.9% hypertension), and 46 patients (22.8%) required an intensive care unit. A total of 159 (78.7%) patients reported at least one symptom after discharge. Of these, 132 (65.3%) persisted with at least one symptom during the telephone survey. Seventy-five (47.2%) of the 159 patients with persistent symptoms reported HCRU. Of these, 93.3% consulted a physician (mean consultations: 2.1 SD 1.1; mean consultations with specialists: 2.4 SD 2.0), and 9.3% were re-hospitalized. The average direct medical costs of post COVID-19 condition were US824 (95%CI 195-1,454). Costs in outpatient were US373(95373 (95%CI 158-588), and in inpatient, US3,285 (95%CI -167-6,738). Conclusions. It is crucial to follow up and identify patients discharged from the hospital who persist with symptoms after three months since we observed a greater HCRU, including prolonged recovery therapie

Designing multifunctional biocatalytic cascade system by multi-enzyme co-immobilization on biopolymers and nanostructured materials

    No full text
In recent decades, enzyme-based biocatalytic systems have garnered increasing interest in industrial and applied research for catalysis and organic chemistry. Many enzymatic reactions have been applied to sustainable and environmentally friendly production processes, particularly in the pharmaceutical, fine chemicals, and flavor/fragrance industries. However, only a fraction of the enzymes available has been stepped up towards industrial-scale manufacturing due to low enzyme stability and challenging separation, recovery, and reusability. In this context, immobilization and co-immobilization in robust support materials have emerged as valuable strategies to overcome these inadequacies by facilitating repeated or continuous batch operations and downstream processes. To further reduce separations, it can be advantageous to use multiple enzymes at once in one pot. Enzyme co-immobilization enables biocatalytic synergism and reusability, boosting process efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Several studies on multi-enzyme immobilization and co-localization propose kinetic advantages of the enhanced turnover number for multiple enzymes. This review spotlights recent progress in developing versatile biocatalytic cascade systems by multi-enzyme co-immobilization on environmentally friendly biopolymers and nanostructured materials and their application scope in the chemical and biotechnological industries. After a succinct overview of carrier-based and carrier-free immobilization/co-immobilizations, co-immobilization of enzymes on a range of biopolymer and nanomaterials-based supports is thoroughly compiled with contemporary and state-of-the-art examples. This study provides a new horizon in developing effective and innovative multi-enzymatic systems with new possibilities to fully harness the adventure of biocatalytic systems

On the influence of drained cyclic preloadings on the cyclic behaviour of Zbraslav sand

    No full text
This article experimentally evaluates the influence of directional drained cyclic preloadings on the subsequent undrained monotonic and cyclic response of Zbraslav sand. The cyclic tests were performed on dense samples and under triaxial conditions. The experiments considered several different preloading directions, magnitude of the maximum deviatoric stress reached during the drained preloading stage and deviatoric stress amplitudes during the undrained shearing stage. The experimental results suggested that the rate of strains and pore water pressure accumulation, and therefore, the number of cycles to reach initial liquefaction or failure conditions are remarkably affected by the direction of the drained preloading history. In addition, the preloading direction plays a major role on the contractive/dilative response during the subsequent undrained monotonic loading. In particular, directional drained cyclic preloadings toward positive deviatoric stresses at constant mean effective stress and isotropic compression led to more dilative responses. Contrary, preloadings toward negative deviatoric stresses at constant mean effective stress led to more contractive responses. The results suggest that these major variations cannot be associated to the rather small changes in the relative density of the samples but likely due to fabric changes and induced anisotropy caused by the drained preloading history

    No full text
In this research project, the causes of conflicts that affect coexistence in educational classrooms are identified, characterizing student behaviors that reflect disruptive relationships, the absence of social values, family problems, and the negative influence of the social context. To mitigate conflicts in educational institutions, a proposal is presented that consists of the design of a pedagogical route, mediated by ICT, which contributes to the strengthening of school coexistence, enabling an environment of peace from the peaceful resolution of problems using for it the dialogue, mediation, and compliance with school agreements. The proposal is framed in a critical rationalist investigation (type) in three research phases constituted by a theoretical stage of information gathering with similar research works, complemented with institutional documentary analysis, plus the legal regulations on which they are based. In a second stage framed in the collection of quantitative data, applying the survey technique. The last initiative-taking stage under the guidelines of the logical framework in design, structure, operation and evaluation by educational actors. Interesting elements were discovered regarding the coherence between the requirements of the legal/theoretical entity with the implementation of guidelines to solve coexistence problems, considering the influence of the context, the family, the normalization of violence and the inclusive population. The implementation of the proposal is recommended to mitigate conflicts by improving learning environments.Lista de tablas y figuras 10 -- Capítulo I.
