über Akteurszentriertheit und „Raum“ ist keineswegs das Problem, allerdings ist deren 
Operationalisierung bzw. Kategorisierung nicht immer schlüssig ausgewiesen. So könnte 
man die Beiträge von Lőkös, Forgó, Pelizaeus und Bogár mit ähnlicher Rechtfertigung in 
einen als „biografisch-individuell“ aufgefassten Block zusammenführen, wie auch etwa 
die Essays von Vizkelety, Tusor, Brunert, Sarbak, Berzeviczys und Hargittay ebenso unter 
der Rubrik „kirchliche Lebens- und Erfahrungswelten“ firmieren könnten. Wie die einzel-
nen Beiträge jenseits der recht knapp wie allgemein gehaltenen einführenden Bemerkun-
gen, die zudem weitgehend ohne Ausführungen zur ungarischen Historiografie auskom-
men, zusammenpassen, geht aus der Einleitung leider nicht eindeutig hervor, und einige 
Ausdeutungen am Ende des Bandes finden sich leider ebenso wenig. 
Ungeachtet der zum Teil spannenden und quellengesättigten Studien sei abschließend 
auf die konzeptionelle Ausrichtung bzw. deren letztlich nicht allzu schlüssige Ausführung 
verwiesen. Ungeachtet eindrucksvoller Schlagworte (z. B. „hybrider Kommunikations-
raum“) sowie Verweisen auf „Überlappungen und Überschneidungen, intensive Transfer-
prozesse und externe Vernetzungen“ (S. 3) schwächelt der Band in konzeptioneller Hin-
sicht. Zwar wird letzten Endes auf die kulturhistorischen Kriterien nach Moritz Csáky 
rekurriert, aber just die Ideengeschichte bzw. Diskrepanz zwischen dem, was in der 
deutschsprachigen Forschung unter „Mittel- und Zentraleuropa“ firmiert, und den Inhalten 
des englischen Begriffs „Central Europe“ wird nur oberflächlich, wenn überhaupt, thema-
tisiert; dies wäre nicht zuletzt aufgrund der Tatsache, dass sich in dem Band Beiträge in 
beiden Sprachen finden, in jedem Fall zu schärfen gewesen.1 Dies zeigt sich auch in dem 
fragwürdigen Umgang mit Ortsnamen und Raumbezeichnungen, und ggf. wäre es sinnvol-
ler gewesen, den Band entweder ganz auf Deutsch oder einheitlich auf Englisch zu veröf-
fentlichen – nicht zuletzt, da dadurch gewiss eine größere Leserschaft hätte angesprochen 
werden können. Dessen ungeachtet findet der interessierte Leser viele spannende Details 
zu so manchen eklektisch anmutenden Themen, die so leider weiterhin eher ein Nischen-
dasein fristen werden.

With this book, Catherine R o t h , a French researcher in information and communica-
tion sciences now employed at the Université de Haute Alsace, has delivered an analysis of 
a mountain club that manages to be both immersive and distanced. R., whose career to date 
includes positions as the director of culture at the Council of Europe and the director of the 
Institut français in Frankfurt and the Institut franco-tyrolien in Innsbruck, has family roots 
in Romania. She uses the mountain club as a lens to examine the construction of a national 
identity dissociated from any state construction. The author’s mobilization of an interna-
tional historiography on the construction of national identities and mountaineering, hand-
written archives, publications spanning more than 150 years, and oral testimonies gathered 
during interviews and participant observations, in German, Romanian, Hungarian, English 
and French, is particularly admirable. The analysis, though sometimes a little long-winded, 
is served by a fluid style that makes this work a pleasure to read. 
The main subject of the book is the Transylvanian Carpathian Club (Siebenbürgischer 
Karpatenverein, SKV), founded in 1880 in the wake of other similar associations and 
modeled on the German and Austrian Alpine Clubs. The club disappeared in 1945 because 
it was associated with Germany, which had lost the war, and because its German members 
 
 
were seen as having sided with the Nazis and most of them were expelled. The documents 
were hidden and forgotten, but the club was re-founded in 1996. Although not written in 
its statutes, this club brought together the Saxon community of Transylvania (a German-
speaking minority that had been present since at least the twelfth century) and helped resist 
Magyarization following the abolition of the Saxon self-administration territory and the 
Saxon assembly in 1876. The Saxons had lost their institutions but, in order to survive as a 
community in a Hungarian nation-state that wanted to unify the population, they created 
new ones, both educational and athletic. In this context of seeking symbols for their identi-
ty, the mountains took center stage. The Carpathians, previously little explored, become a 
means of anchoring this minority, of making it possible to “naturalize the human commu-
nity, to make it as indisputable as a mountain” (p. 11). The community appropriated the 
mountains in such a way that they then provided common practices and points of refer-
ence, in other words a shared culture of nature. The SKV has all the trappings of the Euro-
pean Alpine clubs, which advocate a learned and cultivated approach to the mountains 
(through botany, geology, history, and ethnology) and not just a sporting one. Although it 
had no desire for independence, the club maintained relations with Transylvania’s Ger-
man-speaking urban bourgeoisie. It promoted “endotourism” (p. 93), domestic tourism 
which, more than a leisure activity, was an instrument for the development and education 
of the nation. Hiking itself enables the idea of nationhood to be “embodied,” assimilated in 
and through the body, the senses and the emotions. 
The author, drawing on the writings of Anthony D. Smith, Karl W. Deutsch, and Bern-
hard Giesen, develops a central idea: national communities are forged and maintained by 
intensive forms of internal communication, sometimes explicit, but above all full of 
implicit elements that make it possible to read, between the lines, the cultural horizon 
shared by a community. The SKV, like other alpine clubs, is a medium and a producer of 
media that establishes links, brings people together, and conveys this communication of 
identity. Remembrance is important for building a community, but according to Jan Ass-
mann’s precepts, we only remember what is communicated. This is why words, writings, 
monuments, iconography, and natural elements such as animals, plants, rivers, and moun-
tains (through the names they bear, the maps we make of them, the practices we carry out 
there, the marking of paths, or the provision of refuges) can maintain this community 
memory. The SKV is active on all these fronts. 
The title, “Naturalizing the Mountains,” should be understood in two senses. The first 
of these is about passing off social phenomena as natural in order to make them indisput-
able—this concerns both the Saxon and then Romanian communities, and the Transylva-
nian Carpathians themselves, which become a recognized natural entity, delimited (the 
chapter on botany is very convincing in this respect), and coinciding with a population. 
The second sense refers to the past attempt to give the mountain a nationality, in other 
words, to the appropriation of this geological and biological entity by the community of 
Transylvanian Saxons. According to classic Hippocratic determinism, the mountain is 
deemed to convey upon the Saxon people their immemorial characteristics, even if these 
were only formalized at the end of the nineteenth century following the loss of their politi-
cal prerogatives in 1876. And the Saxon people have turned the mountains into a common, 
unifying space, the basis of their identity and history. Every people has its own nature, in 
every sense of the word. “For most nationalisms, the mountain is the epitome of the natu-
ral” (p. 251), because it allows us to overcome political upheavals and provides a more 
secure foundation for nations. Immovable and eternal, the mountain adds a time, the very 
long time, to the three historical times defined by Fernand Braudel (the geographical time 
or the almost immobile history of the relationships between people and landscape, the 
social time or the history of the economy, the States, the civilizations, and the individual 
time or the event history). The very long time of geology allows us to go beyond the all-
too-turbulent time of history. But why would these Carpathians have forged a singular

tourism and the mountains with identity-related objectives similar to those expressed in the 
nineteenth century: to get to know, love and feel the homeland, to naturalize it, even if it 
was recent and anything but self-evident in a multicultural area. “By the mountain, Roma-
nia for thirty years will be forever” (p. 476). The same processes were used to create a 
different identity. Meanwhile, the memory of the SKV was preserved by the Saxon fami-
lies that remained and by substitutes such as the German high school and the clubs created 
under communism. The end of communism saw the rebirth of two clubs that were heirs to 
the SKV, one in Germany and the other in Romania. Unlike in the club’s early days, sport 
was now the central focus, as it enabled internal communication and set the club apart, 
through merit and practical excellence, from the rest of the Romanian population, who 
were less interested in alpine sport. The author also examines the gradual opening up of 
memories and highlights the success of the communist nationalization process, due to 
which it is practically inconceivable to contemporary Romanians today that the dominant 
identity of the region could have once been Saxon. 
The author concludes with a reflection on the future of this cultured nature during our 
age of ecological upheaval. Gone is the idea that nature is that which does not depend on 
humans, that which goes without saying. The discourse that bases national identity on 
nature is obsolete. Nature bears the more or less devastating imprint of humankind. Ecolo-
gy is becoming a strong point of reference for mountain clubs, renewing ties. The pure 
nation is being challenged, and it is no longer possible to conceive of natural habitats as 
coinciding with human cultural units; biotopes are becoming the cross-border reference 
point. Nature now transcends nations.

The present volume contributes in important ways to a developing area of inquiry that 
focuses on how the study of Central European encounters with the non-European can 
nuance our understanding of Central Europe and its modernity.1 The underlying paradox of 
this research agenda needs little explanation: while colonial domination was a primary 
framework for European encounters with the non-European in the nineteenth century, 
Central Europeans were not significant participants in colonialism. In light of this, the 
editors encourage us to concentrate less on the intensity of contacts between Central 
Europe and the colonized world, and instead to look at how markers of European moderni-
ty were articulated in relation to the non-European, and how these markers influenced 
Central European self-fashionings (pp. 16, 25). In their methodological introduction, Mar-
kéta K ř í ž o v á  and Jitka M a l e č k o v á  suggest that instead of taking hierarchical binaries

sometimes applied to the study of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, we should focus on local 
dynamics of domination and being dominated. In this vein, the volume attempts to tease 
out how, in their strife for national, linguistic, and cultural recognition, the non-dominant 
nationalities of Central Europe engaged with colonial rhetoric and images of colonialism, 
such as being colonized or acting as benevolent civilizers. The studies rest on a well-de-
fined set of concepts developed to understand the circulation of colonial discourses across 
contexts. These include, but are not limited to, “colonial complicity” as discussed by Ulla 
Vuorela and “imperial clouds” as defined by Christoph Kamissek and Jonas Kreienbaum; 
while the authors also build on Andre Gingrich’s “frontier Orientalism” in order to dissect 
regionally specific Orientalisms. The empirical examples examined range from art acade-
mies and museums and from literature to texts of a political or missionary nature. Geo-
graphically, the focus is on Slovak, Czech, and Hungarian contexts. 
Among the individual case studies, Křížová’s study shows that the ability to amass 
overseas collections became a terrain of rivalry between Czechs and German-Bohemians 
in Prague, and the ability to display the non-European came to signal a more general abil-
ity of political and cultural leadership. Bálint V a r g a  illustrates that Hungarian Jesuits 
stationed in Mozambique and China considered Catholicism not only as integral to Habs-
burg imperial and Hungarian national identity, but as a factor that placed their activity 
above the mostly Protestant civilizing missions of colonial empires. Three studies interro-
gate the relationship between local and colonial Orientalisms3 and consider how discourses 
of high imperialism provided a novel language for reflecting on the histories, geographies, 
and peoples of Central and Southeastern Europe. Robert B o r n  carries out an extensive 
analysis of the transimperial exchange of Orientalizing aesthetics, and—among other 
details—reveals that painters from Munich, Vienna, and Paris frequented Szolnok (a town 
in the Great Hungarian Plain) and later Bosnia in search of inspiration for Oriental scenes. 
Malečková offers an engaging analysis of Czech colonial fantasies of acting as civilizers 
among the Slavic Muslims of Bosnia-Herzegovina and thus promoting Czech national 
significance in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The figure of the Turk in Slovak literature is 
the topic of Charles S a b a t o s’s study, in which he suggests that the depiction of the Turk 
as a noble enemy originally appealed to the class-based sensibilities of the nobility.  
Overall, the contributors successfully capture multi-directional exchanges between cen-
ters and peripheries and between colonies and empires. In doing so, they manage to isolate 
a specifically Central European take on the non-European world. At the same time, by 
taking Central Europe as an epistemic site of colonial discourses, the volume contributes to 
the decentering of colonialism. This latter point is strongly undergirded by the closing 
study of the volume, in which Barbara L ü t h i  compares Central and Northern European 
outlooks and concludes that civilizing and colonial fantasies unfolded their seductive 
allures across disparate contexts. In addition to offering new insights into how colonial 
discourses fed nationalisms in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the volume furthers the 
search for global exchanges in Central Europe at exhibitions, fairs,4 and ethnographic 
shows.5 It also identifies Orientalisms beyond French, English or German intellectual

The breadth of the research contained in this collection is a merit of the volume. One 
dimension of this breadth is that outlooks on race are taken up in multiple studies, although 
they are not always elaborated upon (except in Malečková’s study). Admittedly, race was 
not a central topic for the volume, and the editors even note that issues of race are “only 
touched upon” (p. 22). Nonetheless, racial thinking was becoming ever more pervasive in 
the nineteenth century. One can refer to Anne McClintock or Ann Stoler, who have revis-
ited Michel Foucault’s thesis on biopolitics becoming a modern means of governing, and 
claim that biopolitical notions of the normal were coined between colonies and 
metropoles.7 While the authors do reference other aspects of Stoler’s work, her scholarship 
on race and gender hardly features. Whiteness studies and decolonial theory remain mar-
ginal to the volume, although these studies underline that civilizational norms of Euro-
peanness—for example heterosexuality and binary gender—were codified along a long 
history of colonial conquest.8 Significantly, historians of medicine and eugenics emphasize 
that besides the centripetal and centrifugal forces at work within the Austro-Hungarian 
Empire, Central European science was shaped by trans-imperial and global frameworks.9 
In other words, while the authors capture compelling and important moments in the history 
of race, class, and sexuality in Central Europe, some of these findings deserve more space 
and can perhaps be more closely connected to global processes. For example, the racial 
belonging of urban underclasses was viewed with suspicion in Britain, and in the colonies 
the poor were often excluded from the intertwined categories of middle-class status, res-
pectability and Europeanness.10 When Hungarian missionaries wrote that working class 
Europeans were not ideal colonial settlers because they set a harmful example for Africans 
(pp. 194–195), they conveyed racialized perceptions of middle-class respectability to their 
Hungarian audience. Another example of the global circulation of ideas about racial and 
sexual normalcy was the Czech belief that monogamy distinguished Slavic Muslims from 
other Muslims (p. 82). That is, sexual conduct surfaced as a means of setting up hierar-
chical divides within Central and Southeastern Europe in the 1880s.11 These findings earn

germonarchie, in beträchtlicher Zahl gab.1 Der Band beschränkt sich allerdings auf die 
oben genannten Gebiete. Insbesondere im Russländischen Reich nach der Jahrhundert-
wende war die Zahl der Todesopfer deutlich höher als bei den Pogromen in anderen Re-
gionen und im 19. Jh.  
Auf ein einleitendes Kapitel der Hrsg. folgen Abschnitte mit jeweils ungefähr zehn 
Quellen zu verschiedenen Pogromereignissen. Bei den Quellen handelt es sich um behörd-
liche Dokumente, Erinnerungen von Juden, Zeitungsberichte, aber auch literarische Verar-
beitungen. Sie werden durch zahlreiche Bilddokumente ergänzt. Die Materialien wurden 
jeweils von führenden Experten zu den Themengebieten zusammengestellt. 
Der Band beginnt mit Dokumenten über die Ausschreitungen gegen Juden im Russlän-
dischen Reich, vorwiegend in den ukrainischen Gebieten, in den Jahren 1881–1884. Ein 
weiterer Abschnitt enthält Dokumente zum Pogrom von Kišinev 1903, der durch sein 
hohes Gewaltniveau und eine große Zahl von Toten insbesondere in der jüdischen Öffent-
lichkeit weltweit Entsetzen auslöste. 
Ein weiterer Abschnitt ist Pogromen während der Revolution von 1905/06 in Russland 
gewidmet. Die Pogrome dieser Jahre stellen eine Zäsur in der Geschichte dieser Form der 
antijüdischen Gewalt dar. Während frühere Gewalttaten vorwiegend auf soziale Spannun-
gen in Verbindung mit religiös geprägten, antijüdischen Vorstellungen – oft fanden Pogro-
me während der Ostertage statt – und Krisen unterschiedlicher Art zurückgingen, gerieten 
Juden nun viel stärker ins Spannungsfeld politischer Auseinandersetzungen zwischen 
linken, revolutionären Kräften und radikalen, gewaltbereiten Unterstützern der Monarchie. 
Die paramilitärisch organisierten „Schwarzen Hundertschaften“ griffen Juden an, weil sie 
diese für einen Teil der Kräfte hielten, die die alte Ordnung stürzen wollten. Es kam zu 
Hunderten von Pogromen mit vermutlich mehreren tausend Toten. 
Ein bisher vergleichsweise wenig untersuchtes Thema sind Pogrome während des Ers-
ten Weltkriegs, die der Band ebenfalls in einem eigenen Abschnitt behandelt. Hier waren 
die Täter meist russische Truppen in den Kriegsgebieten. Ausschreitungen gab es aber 
auch an anderen Orten. Vorstellungen über Juden als mögliche Verräter und eine unzuver-
lässige Bevölkerungsgruppe bildeten hier den ideologischen Kontext. Eine Rolle spielte 
aber auch, dass Juden für die zunehmenden Versorgungsmängel verantwortlich gemacht

Neben dieser kleineren Kritik sei noch angemerkt, dass Ch. an einigen Stellen des Bu-
ches deutlicher hätte unterscheiden können, was bei den zahlreichen Spionage- und Illoya-
litätsverdächtigungen, die sich nicht selten zu Partisanenpsychosen ausweiteten, militä-
risch wirklich relevant war. Das Bild von gefährlichen Bevölkerungsgruppen, die der 
eigenen Armee in den Rücken fallen können, war in vielen Grenzregionen, etwa im Osma-
nischen Reich, im Russländischen Reich und in Österreich Ungarn, omnipräsent und dien-
te als Rechtfertigung politischer Akteure für eine radikale Bevölkerungspolitik und eine 
demografische Umgestaltung der Grenzregion. Aber auch wenn es Fälle von Spionage und 
Sabotage gab, so hatten diese kein nennenswertes Ausmaß oder gar Einfluss auf den 
Kriegsverlauf. Ebenso ist es bedauerlich, dass das Buch nicht mit Anmerkungen versehen 
ist. Aufgrund der vielen Ego-Dokumente, die Eingang in den Text fanden, ist es schade, 
diese nicht zurückverfolgen zu können. 
Das vorliegende Buch ist aber insgesamt als ein wertvoller Beitrag zur historischen Ost-
mitteleuropaforschung anzusehen. Dass so eine breit angelegte Synthese aus dem Polni-
schen ins Englische und Deutsche übersetzt wird, ist sehr begrüßenswert.

Katja Bergmann: Werner Bergengruen. Ein deutschbaltischer Dichter zwischen Grenzen 
und Zeiten. be.bra wissenschaft. Berlin 2022. 248 S., Ill. ISBN 978-3-95410-295-2. (€ 42,–.) 
Der 1892 in Riga geborene Schriftsteller Werner Bergengruen gehört sicherlich zu den 
interessantesten Persönlichkeiten des deutschsprachigen literarischen Feldes im mittleren 
Drittel des 20. Jh. Eine umfassende geschichtswissenschaftliche Biografie war schon lange 
ein Desiderat. Die Chemnitzer Dissertation von Katja B e r g m a n n, Lehrerin für Deutsch 
und Geschichte an einem Gymnasium in Augsburg, ist ein Versuch, diese Forschungslücke 
zu füllen. 
Die beiden Hauptteile der Studie widmen sich erstens biografischen Linien (S. 19–189) 
und zweitens Denkmustern (S. 191–278). Der erste Teil ist in chronologische Sinn-
abschnitte gegliedert. Bergengruen verbrachte nur seine Kindheit in Riga und besuchte 
dann im Deutschen Reich Gymnasien und Universitäten. Nach dem Kriegsdienst im Deut-
schen Heer sowie in der Baltischen Landeswehr war er zunächst Redakteur der in Deutsch-
land erscheinenden Baltischen Blätter und veröffentlichte seit 1923 Romane, Gedichte und 
Erzählungen. Zum Nationalsozialismus verharrte er von Anfang an in Ablehnung und 
wurde u. a. wegen seiner als „Halbjüdin“ bedrängten Ehefrau aus der Reichskulturkammer 
ausgeschlossen. 1935 trat er zum Katholizismus über. Obwohl er sich nie zur „Inneren 
Emigration“ zählte, geriet er in der Nachkriegszeit in einen Gegensatz zu Emigranten wie 
Thomas Mann, genoss aber in der Bundesrepublik einiges Ansehen, von dem nicht zuletzt 
eine Münchner Ehrendoktorwürde zeugt. Er starb 1964 in Baden-Baden. 
Diesen Lebensweg zeichnet die Vf. detailliert nach. Dabei handelt es sich allerdings nur 
um eine chronologische Aneinanderreihung von Informationen; weitergehende Reflexio-
nen, Anknüpfungen an aktuelle Forschungskontroversen oder auch nur die argumentative 
Auseinandersetzung mit der bestehenden Bergengruen-Literatur sucht man vergeblich. 
Von Quellenkritik kann kaum die Rede sein. Erahnen lässt sich das bereits in der Einlei-
tung, in der B. die Ziele und Fragestellungen oder das übergeordnete Erkenntnisinteresse 
ihrer Arbeit mit keinem Wort erwähnt. So bietet sich dem Leser über weite Strecken eine 
reine Zusammenschau bereits bekannter Fakten mit Scheuklappenblick auf Bergengruen 
selbst. Wie seine Bücher von der NS-Publizistik besprochen wurden, wie er von Beobach-
tern und Teilhabern des Literaturbetriebs eingeordnet wurde, wie sich sein Verhältnis zu 
Verlegern gestaltete, warum er trotz „nicht-arischer“ Ehefrau und Ausschluss aus der 
Reichsschrifttumskammer weiterhin veröffentlichen konnte, darüber liefert B. allenfalls 
Andeutungen. Überhaupt geht der Vf. der Sinn für das Wesentliche in geradezu erstaun-
lichem Maße ab. Häufig verliert sie sich in völlig nebensächlichen Details, z. B. Ausfüh-
rungen zu dem Regiment, in dem der Vater eines Freundes Bergengruens diente (S. 166, 
 
 
Anm. 739). Das Umfeld Bergengruens in Riga beginnt sie beim Deutschen Orden, dem 
Schwertbrüderorden und der Dritten Teilung Polens, wohingegen sie die Gegenwart zu 
oberflächlich darstellt. Während sie den allgemeinen Verlauf des Ersten Weltkriegs in 
ermüdender Breite nacherzählt (S. 40–49), gestützt auf Literatur, die älter ist als B. selbst, 
versteckt sie in einer Fußnote (S. 37, Anm. 75), welche Fächer Bergengruen studierte. 
Viele der relevantesten Fakten aus Bergengruens Werdegang sind nicht anhand von Quel-
len belegt, sondern nur mit der älteren Publizistik aus den 1950er bis 1970er Jahren oder 
den Erinnerungen der Töchter Bergengruens. Das ist ärgerlich, weil man gerade bei einer 
biografischen Dissertation mit so grundlegendem Anspruch gründliche Archivrecherchen 
erwarten dürfte. Wenn B. etwa schreibt: „Am 10. März 1937 wird Bergengruen aus der 
Reichskulturkammer ausgeschlossen, mit der Begründung, er sei durch seine schriftstelle-
rischen Veröffentlichungen nicht geeignet, ‚am Aufbau der deutschen Kultur mitzuwir-
ken‘“ (S. 113), so würde man sich dafür einen zuverlässigeren Beleg wünschen als die 
Erinnerungen einer Bergengruen-Tochter. 
Im zweiten Teil offenbart die Vf. eine genaue Kenntnis des Werks Bergengruens, das 
sie teils in ansprechender Weise im Hinblick auf unterschiedliche Themenbereiche unter-
sucht. Dabei ist sie bemüht, auch literaturwissenschaftliche Analysen für das tiefere Ver-
ständnis von Bergengruens Denken fruchtbar zu machen. Leider begnügt sie sich nicht 
selten mit Floskeln wie „Bergengruen ist ein Mann der Kontinuität“ (S. 202), die sie nicht 
mit konkreten Inhalten füllt. Auch hier kommen zentrale Fragen nicht zur Sprache, etwa 
danach, wie sich Bergengruens politische Anschauungen in den jeweiligen zeitgenössi-
schen Kontexten verorten lassen.1 Im Kapitel „Der russische Balte“ diskutiert B., wenn 
auch beileibe nicht erschöpfend, Bergengruens Identifikation mit seiner multiethnischen 
Heimatregion. Bergengruen verlebte dort ja nur seine ersten Kindheitsjahre. Was macht 
ihn dennoch, wie es zurecht im Untertitel heißt, zu einem „deutschbaltischen Dichter“? 
Aufschlussreich wäre hier eine Einbettung in deutschbaltische Schriftstellerkreise (Frank 
Thieß, Siegfried von Vegesack u. a.) gewesen. Bergengruens Geschichtsbild war – gerade 
in der Abgrenzung vom Nationalsozialismus, aber auch im Unterschied zu den in Deutsch-
land geborenen Kollegen Jochen Klepper und Reinhold Schneider – nicht auf Preußen 
fixiert, sondern wies eher Bezüge zum Zarenreich oder zur Hansezeit auf. Bedauerlicher-
weise wurde auch keine Verortung in den christlichen Intellektuellenkreisen während der 
NS-Zeit (neben Klepper und Schneider wäre u. a. an Rudolf Alexander Schröder zu den-
ken) vorgenommen.2 
Durch Tilgung der unnötigen Exkurse und der nur schwer erträglichen Redundanzen 
hätte das Buch fast auf die Hälfte gekürzt werden können. Zu bemängeln sind unter vielem 
anderen zwei völlig deckungsgleiche, ganzseitige Karten der Russischen Ostseeprovinzen, 
einige doppelt auftretende Absätze und Fußnoten (z. B. S. 67, Anm. 230; S. 82, Anm. 323) 
und die Angabe von Lebensdaten aller auftretenden Personen unabhängig von ihrer Rele-
vanz – allein dreimal die der Schriftstellerin Agnes Günther, welche für die Biografie 
Bergengruens nur eine ganz marginale Rolle spielt (S. 13, Anm. 31; S. 35, Fließtext und 
Anm. 61). Unangenehm fällt auch die formale Umsetzung auf, wobei die zahllosen Druck-
fehler noch das geringste Übel sind. Der gesamte Anmerkungsapparat ist nicht nur um-
ständlich, sondern an vielen Stellen unvollständig, nicht konzise, unübersichtlich und 
mitunter auch schlicht falsch. Von der Kurzzitierweise, die im Literaturverzeichnis für 
jeden Eintrag einzeln ausgewiesen ist, wird in den Fußnoten kein Gebrauch gemacht. Ein

gründliches Lektorat hätte hier dringend aufräumen und ordnen müssen. Die Lektüre wird 
durch dieses Versäumnis sehr erschwert. Dem hochtrabenden Anspruch, die erste „gültige 
Gesamtschau zu Leben und Werk“ Werner Bergengruens zu liefern (S. 17), wird das Buch 
leider aufgrund seiner zahlreichen, schwerwiegenden Mängel in keiner Weise gerecht.

Katrin Steffen: Blut und Metall. Die transnationalen Wissensräume von Ludwik Hirsch-
feld und Jan Czochralski im 20. Jahrhundert. Wallstein. Göttingen 2021. 568 S. ISBN 978-

Für die Geistes- und Literaturgeschichte sind Doppelbiografien – vitae parallelae – seit 
der Antike von großer Bedeutung. Sie stellen nicht nur das Leben „großer Männer“ dar, 
sondern zeichnen zugleich auch ein eindrucksvolles Epochenbild im Spiegel voneinander 
unabhängiger exemplarischer Lebensläufe. Dass dieses traditionsreiche Genre auch in der 
heutigen geniekultkritischen und zunehmend gender-sensiblen Wissenschaftsgeschichts-
schreibung eine aufschlussreiche Darstellungsform sein kann, zeigt die Wissenschaftshis-
torikerin Katrin S t e f f e n  in ihrer als Buch erschienenen Habilitationsschrift. 
Anhand der Lebensläufe zweier polnischer Forscher, des Serologen Ludwik Hirszfeld 
(1884–1954) und des Metallurgen Jan Czochralski (1885–1953), entfaltet die Vf. die 
Geschichte von Wissenschaft, Technik und Medizin in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jh. in 
einem transnationalen Wissensraum, der sich von Polen über ganz Europa bis in die USA 
erstreckte und mit Politik, Industrie und Militär verflochten war. St. schreibt jedoch keine 
hagiografische Erfolgsgeschichte der großen Heroen, sondern erklärt deren Wirken aus 
den je spezifischen historischen und sozialen Kontexten. Gerade die vergleichende Gegen-
überstellung der beiden bis 1939 weitgehend parallel verlaufenden wissenschaftlichen 
Karrieren Hirszfelds und Czochralskis eignet sich hierfür, da sie es erlaubt, aus unter-
schiedlichen Perspektiven das Wirkungsgeflecht von gesellschaftlichen, ökonomischen, 
sozialen, ethischen und kulturellen Faktoren zu untersuchen, deren besonderes Zusammen-
spiel die jeweilige Karriere prägte (Kap. 1). Mit der Doppelbiografie wird also zugleich 
eine Doppelperspektive eingenommen, die die Gefahr einer zwanghaften Deutung vergan-
gener Ereignisse auf einen bestimmten Sinn oder eine bestimmte Pointe hin vermeidet 
oder zumindest minimiert und stattdessen die Bedeutung von kontingenten Faktoren sicht-
bar macht: „Eine reflexive Auseinandersetzung mit dem ‚gemachten‘ Leben ist daher 
geboten. Dazu gehört, die Brüche und Misserfolge in den Lebensläufen von Hirszfeld und 
Czochralski in das erzählte Leben zu integrieren“ (S. 21).  
Den kulturalistischen Ansatz, Wissens- und Wissenschaftsgeschichte nicht als lineare 
Abfolge von Entdeckungen und Erkenntnissen darzustellen, sondern als komplexen Pro-
zess mit all seinen Durchsetzungsmechanismen und Konkurrenzen zu erzählen, macht die 
Vf. zur Methode und greift dabei auf die Theorie des Denkstils und Denkkollektivs des 
polnischen Mediziners und Wissenschaftstheoretikers (und Hirszfeld-Schülers) Ludwik 
Fleck zurück (Kap. 1.1). Für die Lebensläufe von Hirszfeld und Czochralski heißt dies, 
nach Kontexten und Netzwerken zu fragen, das Umfeld zu erforschen und dabei die 
Ideenkonstellationen und Debatten zu berücksichtigen, in die sie eingebunden waren, denn 
der Weg zum Erfolg war oft steinig und von Rückschlägen gekennzeichnet. Die Vf. lässt 
sich auf dieses schwierige Untersuchungsmodell mit aller Konsequenz ein, indem sie die 
Untersuchungsgegenstände von Hirszfeld und Czochralski – Blut und Metall – im lokalen 
und transnationalen Kontext verortet (Kap. 2.3) und dabei die Zirkulation von Wissen – 
von kleinen Laboratorien bis hin zu großen wissenschaftlichen Institutionen – nachzeich-
net. 
Stoffe und Substanzen wie Blut und Metalle erlebten in der Zeit der beiden Weltkriege 
eine Hochkonjunktur: Hirszfelds Blutgruppenforschung hatte großen Einfluss auf Medizin 
und Genetik, möglich wurde durch seine Forschungen eine detaillierte Diagnostik vieler 
Erbkrankheiten (Kap. 3.1); seine Erkenntnisse waren auch für die Rechtswissenschaften
