Deformity and Disability Transposed: Dynamics of the Periphery Identities in Oral Narratives

    Get PDF
Most studies done on the subject of deformity and gender always seek to investigate the extent to which society generates and sustains biasness against minorities. They highlight the conditions and factors that engender biasness and segregation plus the resultant stigma. This study however, takes the view that oral narratives do go beyond the mere exposure of cultural/social limitations; that they, in effect project more vibrant, incisive and radical alternatives to matters oppression. The essay takes cognizant of the fact that language is a formidable force in social construction that shapes identities and influences perceptions. Language is not only a purveyor of social attitudes but a crucial tool in engineering and sustaining created attitudes. In this study, I use two oral narratives, “Simbi Nyaima” recorded by Onyango-Ogutu (1974) and “Simbi” recorded by Jane Nandwa (1983), to reflect on deformity and disability as a form of marginalization. Both narratives are centered on women with some form of physical disability or limitation, which inspires socio-cultural distancing, fear or revilement. Both are doubly marginalized: as women and as deformed. They suffer open and hostile discrimination. Specifically, the essay seeks to: First, analyze the dynamics of social construction and labeling. Second, analyze the tension/ironies between the dynamics of good and evil as they are given physical identity and value. Thirdly, demonstrate how the selected oral narratives transpose the dominant/minority relations and images in society

The hospitality industry, particularly zero-rated hotels, operates within a complex framework where power dynamics significantly influence organizational behavior and sustainable performance. This study delved into the intricate interplay of leadership power bases, specifically positional and personal powers, within the context of zero-rated hotels in Eldoret town, uncovering their impact on sustainable performance. Grounded in the Contingency theory and Sustainable Balanced Scorecard framework, the research employed a mixed-method approach, combining self-reported questionnaires and nominal group discussions. Results highlighted the pervasive misuse of legitimate, reward, and coercive power, hindering sustainable performance. Expert power emerged as a positive influencer, fostering a culture of learning and collaboration, while referent power faced skepticism. Information and connection power, when misused, create imbalances and conflicts. Multiple regression analysis results confirmed that both positional power (β=-.416, p=.004) and personal power (β=-.478, p=.001) impacted hotel sustainable performance negatively. The study recommends leadership development, transparent communication, fairness, employee empowerment, positive interpersonal relationships, continuous learning, and employee well-being initiatives to address power dynamics and enhance sustainable performance in zero-rated hotels. These findings have significant implications for organizational strategies and policies, emphasizing the need for ethical leadership and inclusive practices to foster a conducive environment for long-term success in the hospitality sector

The Plight of African Worker and Economic Starvation: A New Historicism Theory Survey of Kiswahili Drama in Five Decades

    No full text
This paper analyses Kiswahili drama in the quest to signify that for decades, the sorry state of workers has informed the lack of economic growth in many African states other matters notwithstanding. The marginalization and paying only lip services to workers’ plights have impacted negatively the socio-economic development across the continent. This paper argues that, the unceasing industrial unrests in the workforce in many African states is the reason economies in Africa have stagnated for decades. To lead the discussion, the paper sought to indulge three selected Kiswahili playlists using New Historicism Theory for data. The selected texts are: Kilio cha Haki (1981), Visiki (1984) and Mstahiki Meya (2009). The paper hypothesizes that, poor working conditions and opaque and draconian labour laws are responsible for the mess. The turmoil is further compounded by greedy political elites and mean economic players. The discussion concedes that, for Africa to jumpstart socio-economic and political development, its economies aided by a strong workforce is necessary. The paper concludes that Africa needs to reap benefits from big workforce and stop migrant workers that leave to seek for favourable working conditions elsewhere. Strong labour laws, workers’ representations and inter-state free labour movements will help ease labour shortage in the continent. Reaping into immense natural resources and discouraging economic zoning by selfish individuals would see Africa rule the world

    No full text

Domestic Workers and the Politics of Space Within the Household in Ferdinand Oyono’s "Houseboy"

    Get PDF
Domestic workers have constantly been disregarded within the domestic space. However, owing to their immense contribution to the smooth running of the household, this disregard comes at a cost. The mistreatment of the house servants inevitably results to the detriment of the home owners or the employers. The frosty relationship that frequently exists between the domestic workers has been a subject of concern for some post-colonial Africa literary writers. Literary critics have however paid minimal attention to the tense relationship that exists between house servants and their employers. Critics have chosen to concentrate on the more ‘serious issues’ of colonialism pitting the colonizer versus the colonized. This research paper epitomizes the plight of domestic servants in the course of re-reading Ferdinand Oyono’s Houseboy (1966). The tools of analysis employed are Karl Marx and Frederick Engel’s strand of Marxism
