Usawiri wa Masuala Mbalimbali ya Kiuhalisia-Hakiki katika Riwaya za \u27Kichwamaji\u27 na \u27Dunia Uwanja wa Fujo\u27 za Euphrase Kezilahabi

    No full text

    Get PDF
Sustainable tourism presents an essential engine for social and economic development, and has a great capability for stimulation of employment and enterprise, especially for youth and women. Over the last decades, the measurement of sustainable tourism has been expanded and diversified even as debates on the appropriate approaches continue. In spite of this, the significance of sustainable tourism to employment and GDP is mostly underestimated in policy-making and strategy in tourism development. In recent years, there have been limited studies that established the effects of sustainable tourism development on economic growth. A longitudinal research design was adopted in obtain secondary data about Kenya from the World Travel and Tourism Council and the International Monetary Fund. E-views 10 software was used to analyze the time-series data. Drawing on the data from 1995 to 2020, Johansen co-integration, Granger causality, and regression approaches were used. Tourism GDP and tourism employment were adopted as measures of sustainable tourism, while real GDP per capita was employed as a measure of economic growth. The study found out that tourism employment and GDP are positively connected to economic growth in Kenya (β = 0.546086, p=0.000 < 0.05). The results indicated unidirectional association between economic growth, contribution to GDP and tourism employment. The findings indicated that a rise in Kenya’s economic growth significantly improves sustainable development of the tourism industry. The study suggests that legislators and tourism policymakers should focus on the policies aimed at promoting the ability of the tourism industry to provide more employment opportunities and contribute to GDP by tapping on the current economic growth. For long-term economic growth, tourism should be developed following the three pillars of sustainability

    No full text

Potential Impacts of Climate Change on Wildlife Protected Areas; A Case Study of Maasai Mara National Game Reserve, Kenya

    Get PDF
Unpredictable temperature and precipitation patterns brought on by climate change are becoming more widely acknowledged as one of the major variables influencing wildlife populations in protected areas like parks and reserves. The wildlife populations that sustain the thriving tourism business may decline as a result of these temperature and rainfall variations brought on by extreme flooding and drought occurrences. Protected areas form the bedrock of the tourism industry in Kenya, keeping in mind the tourism industry is characterized as heavily ‘nature-based in Kenya’. Based on chaos-complexity theory, this study investigated the effects of rainfall and temperature variations on wildlife population dynamics in Maasai Mara National Game Reserve (MMNGR). MMNGR is a top premier wildlife park in Kenya, recording major visits. The study adopted an explanatory research design. Rainfall and temperature data was obtained from 15 rain gauges located in MMNGR operated by World Wide Fund (WWF) and Friends for Conservation. Wildlife population data was collected from the Directorate of Resource Surveys and Remote Sensing (DRSRS). Changes in vegetation cover were determined from satellite imagery using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) method. This method was used to measure changes in vegetation cover that are likely to have been influenced by rainfall and temperature trends. The NDVI images from the years 1975 to 2018 were processed to obtain specific NDVI values per land cover category. NDVI values detected any changes in vegetation cover. The mean monthly rainfall and air temperature in Maasai National Game Reserve for the last 54 years were analyzed. Time series was applied to analyze rainfall and temperature data. Findings indicate that rainfall and temperature variations positively contribute to influencing the decline in wildlife populations, as there could be other factors too. The study findings suggest that high amounts of vegetation cover, as indicated by NDVI maps, prompt high survival rates for wildlife and increased populations and vice versa. This study therefore proposes that extremely high and low rainfall totals and temperature trends are likely to increase wildlife mortality, hence reducing wildlife survival rates and consequently population. The implications will have a direct influence on the tourism industry as visitors are highly likely to shift their visits to other tourism destinations with abundant wildlife populations

Uchunguzi wa Sababu za Mtumizi ya Lakabu za Wanafunzi katika Ufundishaji na Ujifunzaji wa Kiswahili kama Lugha ya Kigeni Nchini Tanzania

    No full text

Gengetone Music: Sexuality, Misogyny and Gender Representation in Popular Media

    No full text
This study examines the influence of gengetone music in mainstream Kenyan media, particularly its effect on social perceptions of gender, sexuality, and cultural identity. It investigates the genre\u27s endorsement of sexualisation, misogyny, and skewed gender representation, by employing feminist and cultural analysis frameworks to investigate how gengetone both mirrors and perpetuates gender stereotypes, frequently representing women as objects for male pleasure while depicting themes of nightlife, casual sex, and substance consumption. It focuses on understanding how gengetone sustains these stereotypes and the implications for female agency and gender dynamics in Kenya\u27s music industry. It posits that gengetone\u27s material, although aligned with urban youth culture, may unintentionally perpetuate detrimental gender biases. The study thus establishes its topical significance, as the swift rise of gengetone\u27s popularity among Kenyan youth renders the analysis of its cultural meanings essential for comprehending its broader social implications. It evaluates the genre\u27s capacity to influence the identities and viewpoints of young listeners on gender roles, investigating how exposure to these representations may affect self-esteem, body image, and societal norms. The scope encompasses an emphasis on Kenyan gengetone, particularly analysing lyrics and video content as the principal data sources. This research enhances discourse on gender representation in popular music, calling for a balanced and socially aware portrayal of women that honours diversity and empowers audiences. The research therefore deepens comprehension of gender dynamics in Kenyan popular culture, emphasizing the media\u27s capacity to uphold or contest existing gender norms

Content Analysis of Website Disclosure of Sustainability Initiatives and Practices by Ecotourism Kenya’s Eco-Rated Hospitality Establishments

    Get PDF
Globally, there has been increased attention and focus on ways in which the hospitality industry can contribute to sustainability in terms of environmental, social economic and cultural dimensions. In Kenya, the Ecotourism Kenya (EK) oversees the Eco-rating certification programme for hospitality establishments aimed at promoting sustainability and responsible tourism. Over the years, hospitality establishments have used diverse media to communicate the initiatives and practices to their stakeholders. It is argued that the popularity of the internet makes it a preferred media to communicate sustainability initiatives in addition to maintaining business success. There has been limited empirical attention however on Kenya’s eco-rated hospitality establishments’ websites in relation to their disclosure of sustainability related information. This article is based on an analysis of 76 EK eco-rated hospitality establishments’ websites. The study objective was to analyze information disclosed by the eco-rated hospitality establishments in relation to the three pillars of sustainability: environmental, socioeconomic and cultural aspects. A research strategy based on content analysis technique of websites was undertaken and the websites were visited on several occasions between Mid-July to Mid-September 2024. Only information available for the general public in the corporate websites were considered. A research instrument was developed based on the three aspects. Content validity of the study instrument was ensured through expert review and inclusion of industry guidelines on sustainability. Reliability was ensured through triangulation. The descriptive research design informed the study where the collected data was subjected to descriptive statistical analysis techniques mainly frequencies and percentages. The cultural aspects received the highest disclosure (87%), environmental aspects (85%) while socioeconomic aspects received the least disclosure in majority of the websites (65%). The initiatives are also not explicitly visible upon access to most websites homepages and therefore limited guarantee for visibility individuals visiting the websites. The study concludes that even though eco-rated establishments disclose their sustainability initiatives in their websites, there is need to incorporate more information especially on the socio-economic aspects. The establishment should make the information easily accessible as a way of improving Kenya’s online visibility as a sustainable tourism destination

Digital Confessions: Binyavanga Wainaina\u27s Online Coming Out and the Poetics of Queer Desire

    No full text
Recent studies on ‘coming out’ stories among the queer increasingly show that the internet and new forms of online and digital media play significant roles in defining gender nonconforming sexualities and identities in modern societies. This article examines the late Binyavanga Wainaina’s online stories I Am a Homosexual, Mum and Alien Taste within the genre of ‘coming out’ narratives that are mediated, staged and performed as a ritual of ‘queer politics’ within local and global spaces. It examines the author’s use of the confessional storytelling mode to intertextually reference his earlier memoir, One Day I Will Write About This Place to reenact a deliberate ‘gay visibility’ agenda while in the same instance performing new forms of queer sexuality and desires in a virtual space. The article also analyses the implications of online media participation in the process of gay self-disclosure in order to show how new media influences visibility and agency in homophobic African cultural spaces. Because of the reaction that his disclosure elicited in multiple publics, the article argues that the three texts represent a process and continuum of media formats within the milieu of storytelling, ritualized ‘coming out’ and a staging of queer identities and desires. Ultimately the article unravels how online self-disclosure narratives perform new forms of queer desires in virtual spaces
