    Sign-Bridge: A Dual Sign Language Translator App for Enhanced Communication and Inclusivity

    This study presents the development of Sign-Bridge, a dual-mode mobile application to enhance communication accessibility for Deaf students enrolled in the university by supporting Filipino Sign Language (FSL). Unlike most existing solutions that default to American Sign Language (ASL), this app is purpose-built for FSL, reflecting local linguistic and cultural context. Employing a developmental research framework and the Agile Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), the system was engineered using Android Studio, Flutter, Node.js, Teachable Machine, and TensorFlow Lite. The Sign-Bridge app features two-way translation: it converts spoken and written text into FSL gestures through deep learning-based recognition and translates FSL signs into text. The evaluation involved 12 purposively selected participants: five IT experts who assessed system performance and maintainability, one content expert who validated linguistic accuracy, and six Deaf students who evaluated its usability. McCall’s Software Quality Model concluded the expert assessments, while the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) guided user feedback. The system achieved 100% accuracy in text-to-sign and audio-to-sign translation, and 90% accuracy in sign-to-text recognition. Expert evaluators gave an average rating of 4.39 (Good), while users rated the app 4.18 (Agree), indicating a high level of technical soundness and user satisfaction. These results demonstrate the Sign Bridge app’s strong potential as an inclusive educational and communication tool, contributing meaningfully to accessible technology development for the Deaf in the Philippine context

    Revitalizing English Language Competency of SCSC Students Through ATHENA and MOOC Projects

    Learning English is essential for enabling students to use the language effectively in real-life situations. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the MOOC and ATHENA Projects in enhancing English language competency among students at South Cotabato State College during the academic year 2023–2024. Using a quasi-experimental design with pretest and posttest assessments, the research involved 80 low-performing students identified with challenges linked to weak English proficiency. A standardized test from the American English Project was administered, and data were analyzed using mean and t-test. Results revealed that students struggled most in Syntax (Grammar) and Semantics, while Phonology showed satisfactory performance but still required improvement. The implementation of the MOOC and ATHENA interventions led to a significant improvement in English competency across all three areas. Notably, students achieved higher posttest scores, demonstrating better command of the English language and effective communication with fewer errors. The findings confirmed a significant difference between pretest and posttest results, highlighting the success of these programs in addressing language-related deficiencies. In conclusion, prior to the intervention, students had limited English skills and struggled with communication. After the intervention, they showed strong improvement. Therefore, it is recommended that the MOOC and ATHENA Projects be institutionalized at South Cotabato State College to continuously support students’ English language development

    Analysis on the Implementation of a Solar-Powered Automobile Air Conditioning System (SPAAS)

    This study presents the implementation of a Solar-Powered Automobile Air-Conditioning System (SPAAS), offering a sustainable alternative to conventional vehicle air conditioning. Installed in a repurposed minibus, the system utilizes four 330-watt mono-crystalline photovoltaic (PV) panels mounted on the roof to harness solar energy. A 3-kilowatt inverter converts this energy, while a 40-ampere solar charge controller regulates its flow to two 250 ampere-hour, 12-volt gel-type deep-cycle batteries. These batteries provide a reliable power source for the 1-hp split-type air conditioning unit. Addressing the transportation sector\u27s growing demand for eco-friendly and energy-efficient solutions, SPAAS significantly reduces reliance on fossil fuels. By harnessing readily available solar radiation, it directly decreases carbon emissions associated with vehicle cooling, aligning with global efforts to mitigate climate change and promote sustainable transportation. The system\u27s design integrates photovoltaic panels, a robust battery storage system, and an optimized air conditioning unit for efficient energy conversion and storage. A comprehensive evaluation assesses SPAAS performance, energy efficiency, and economic viability, providing insights into its technological feasibility and potential for widespread adoption. The study also examines the broader environmental implications, including potential benefits and challenges of large-scale implementation. This includes an analysis of initial investment costs, long-term maintenance, and the overall environmental impact throughout the system\u27s life cycle. The findings contribute to a better understanding of solar-powered technologies in creating a more sustainable transportation future

    Isolation and Characterization of Putative Probiotics from Gut Microflora of “Lagao” (Nemipterus japonicus)

    This study aimed to identify and characterize the potential probiotic from the gut of Threadfin Bream (Nemipterus japonicus) or locally known as “Lagao” in Estancia, Iloilo, Philippines. Twenty-two (22) bacterial isolates were re-covered and characterized based on morphological (through Gram Staining) and biochemical characterization (O2 Metabolites and Motility Tests), and enzymatic activity (amylase and cellulase). Isolates exhibited diverse characteristics, including varying oxygen requirements and significant amylase and cellulase activities, suggesting their potential role in enhancing digestion. Three (3) isolates, MCF1, HKF1, and DAF2, were selected based on their robust growth, and notable enzyme activities- potential for improving host health. These were identified as Oceanimonas smirnovii, Aeromonas veronii, and Bacillus licheniformis, respectively, using 16S rDNA sequencing. Only isolate DAF2, identified as B. licheniformis (a known probiotic), may hold significant potential for enhancing fish health, growth performance, and possible disease resistance in aquaculture through their probiotic properties

    Fine-Tuning a Transformer Model for Sentiment Analysis and Summarization of ISO-Certified Customer Satisfaction Surveys

    Understanding customer sentiment is an essential part of improving service quality, especially for organizations that rely on regular feedback, such as ISO-certified institutions. While structured survey questions provide valuable data, it’s often the open-ended comments that offer the most insight into customer experiences. However, analyzing large volumes of written feedback manually can be time-consuming and inconsistent. This study explores the use of machine learning and deep learning models to automate sentiment analysis of the responses gathered from customer satisfaction surveys. The research focused on comparing the performance of three models (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers), LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory), and Logistic Regression. To gain a clearer understanding of the customers\u27 comments and suggestions, the models will be used to analyze their feedback. The dataset then went through a series of steps that included handling missing values and cleaning the comments to ensure quality output. After the data pre-processing is the results. Going through the outcomes, BERT significantly outperformed the other models, achieving the highest overall accuracy of 84%, while LSTM followed with 78%, and Logistic Regression lagged behind at 39%. These findings highlight the value of using transformer-based models like BERT for understanding complex, unstructured customer feedback and suggest that such models can play a meaningful role in decision-making and service improvement

    U-roAm: Augmented Reality-Based Campus Navigation and Building Directory for University of Antique-Main Campus

    This study presents "U-roAm," an augmented reality (AR)-based campus navigation and building directory system developed for the University of Antique-Main Campus. The study addresses the navigation challenges faced by students, staff, and visitors in large university environments. Data were gathered through convenience sampling and evaluated using McCall’s software quality model and the System Usability Scale (SUS). Results show that U-roAm demonstrates good usability, maintainability, and flexibility, and is user-friendly according to feedback. However, areas such as data integrity, security, and AR direction accuracy require further improvement. The project has significant potential to enhance campus navigation, improve user experience, and promote accessibility. Recommendations for future work include refining AR accuracy and expanding features

    Evaluation of Christian Values-Integrated Language Arts Instructional Material

    This study evaluated the acceptability of a Christian values-integrated language arts instructional material to assess its quality, alignment with educational standards, and potential for integrating character-building into academic instruction. Employing a mixed-methods research design, both quantitative and qualitative data were collected from English educators, ministers, students, and parents to ensure a comprehensive evaluation. Findings from the quantitative phase indicated that the instructional material was highly acceptable across key criteria, including objectives, learning content, organization and procedure, assessment, illustrations and visuals, form and writing style, and references. Among these, learning content and references received the most favorable feedback, reflecting strong alignment with academic goals and moral values. In contrast, illustrations and visuals received relatively lower approval, suggesting an area for potential enhancement. Qualitative feedback reinforced these results, highlighting the material’s clear structure, effective integration of Christian values, and alignment with academic standards. Respondents commended its role in deepening students’ faith and moral understanding, while also pointing out recurring areas for improvement. In conclusion, the instructional material shows strong promise as an effective tool for promoting both academic achievement and moral development. Further enhancements in visual design, interactivity, and inclusivity could significantly strengthen its impact and relevance across diverse learning communities.  Recommendations included incorporating more engaging visuals, interactive features, and refining the layout and design for better accessibility. Additionally, participants emphasized the need for a more inclusive approach that respects diverse beliefs and learning needs

    Understanding One’s Self through Learning Log: A Metacognitive Self-Expression Grounded Theory

    The purpose of this study is to explore how alternative assessment method such as the use of learning log helps enhance the critical thinking skills of the students. This study will make use of the qualitative research method using grounded theory.  It will be conducted to the set of PIT freshmen teacher – education students who participates in the semester – long application of the learning log. However, this study uses the self- selection technique since the respondents themselves decides if they would like to take part of the study. During the intervention process, students will be asked to use the learning log with the purpose of monitoring the extent of their learning and how much learning have they acquired during the entire topic. Moreover, towards the end of the study, data will be collected through an interview using a 6 - item open – ended questionnaire. Descriptive statistics will be used to analyze the frequency of different perceptions of the students on the use of learning log as an alternative assessment method in mathematics. Qualitative data from the interviews show how learning log fosters critical thinking of the students. They also show that writing in mathematics is perceived as a tool to understand the subject more easily by expressing what they have learned and allowing the teacher to become aware of what they needed to know. Thus, it highly recommends learning log as an effective way in enhancing the students’ critical thinking through metacognition

    Tales of Sibalom River for a Culturally-Responsive Teaching in Early Childhood Education

    Rivers have long been integral to the identity and cultural development of communities, shaping traditions, beliefs, and ways of life. This study explores the cultural narratives and local knowledge associated with the Sibalom River, aiming to uncover its role in shaping values, traditions, and livelihoods within the community ensuring that indigenous knowledge and historical narratives are meaningfully integrated into education. A qualitative research approach was employed, utilizing in-depth interviews, participant observations, field notes, and photographic documentation to capture the rich cultural and historical significance of the Sibalom River. Through thematic analysis, key patterns and insights emerged, reflecting the deep connection between the river and the lives of the people who depend on it. The findings of this study reveal that the Sibalom River is not just a body of water but a keeper of the community’s history and identity. Through the stories, beliefs, and customs passed down along its banks, the river continues to shape the values, traditions, and everyday lives of the people who call it home. From these insights, the study brings forward two important ideas: Flowing Identities, which captures how the river shapes the way people live and the values they hold, and Anchored in Story, which reminds us how shared narratives help preserve cultural identity and strengthen the bonds within the community. These ideas offer meaningful ways for schools and local groups to include local culture in learning and community activities, making sure these stories and values live on. By recognizing the Sibalom River as a cultural and educational resource, educators and curriculum developers may create meaningful learning experiences that strengthen community identity and environmental stewardship while fostering a deeper appreciation for local heritage

    Integrating Folk Dance, Art, and Ecology in Isla Kapispisan towards Sustainability

    This study highlights the intersection of intangible cultural heritage, visual arts, and environmental education through the development of an illustrated folk dance repertoire rooted in the lived experiences and ecological practices of the community in Isla Kapispisan, Barangay Pinamuk-an, New Washington, Aklan, Philippines. The baseline information obtained through interviews with the island residents was used to conceptualize and describe the five original and peculiar dance movements, namely Taeabahan, Pagtanum It Bakhawan, Pamanggae, Panaboy, and Batakbatak. These movements symbolically represent traditional practices such as oyster propagation, mangrove reforestation, crab harvesting, and sustainable fishing techniques. These choreographic sequences are visually rendered through a series of illustrations, transforming the dances into a multidimensional medium for cultural expression and ecological advocacy. The integration of folk dance with visual arts serves as a culturally responsive approach to conservation education that fosters environmental awareness, community engagement, and the transmission of ecological knowledge through the arts
