    No full text
The Takbir festival has become an annual ritual for Muslims in Yogyakarta. Festivals are held in many places and organized by local communities. This research was conducted to investigate the Takbir festival by seeing it as a cultural public sphere and how it contributes in the era of digital media. The research used a qualitative field research approach. Data was collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. The research results show that the Takbir festival has exceeded its traditional function as a broadcast medium of Islam. On the contrary, the takbir festival has presented itself as a cultural public sphere where various cultures are displayed through various elements such as mascots, traditional clothing, musical instruments, and other ornaments used by each participant. These cultural expressions are the participants\u27 interpretations in translating the festival theme, namely Caring for The World and Civilization. Participants translated the interpretation into various cultural expressions. These expressions basically display a political articulation of certain events, which are linked to their interpretation of the festival theme. There are two political positions that can be identified from the way the festival participants interpret the theme, namely Caring for the Nature Conservation and Maintaining the Cultural Pluralism. This research also found that festivals are an important medium for cultural learning between generations and contribute to building social integration. Through meetings between spectators and participants, the Takbiran festival can erode conflict and social divisions, especially those resulting from the spread of hatred on social media

This research evaluates the practice of zakat distribution to santri in Aceh through the sociology of Islamic law approach. In Acehnese society, religious figures such as Dayah, Teungku, and Abi have high authority that influences socio-religious practices, including the allocation of zakat. This respect forms a social doctrine that prioritizes santri as zakat recipients, even though their economic status is not always categorized as fakir (destitute) or miskin (poor) in the classical zakat provisions. This research uses qualitative methods, in-depth interview techniques, and participatory observation involving Tgk Imum, amil, and Dayah leaders in ten villages. The results identified three main factors shaping zakat distribution: community perceptions of santri, the strength of social networks, and the role of ʿurf (local custom). Santri are positioned as fighters in the cause of Allah (fī sabīlillāh), and their proximity to religious authorities strengthens this legitimacy. Based on sahih ʿurf, this practice integrates sharia principles with local socio-cultural dynamics

This study adopts a qualitative methodology and field research techniques to explore harmonizing these elements in establishing the onset of Ramadan in Maluku. Findings indicate that the Maluku community perceives local customs as an essential aspect that should be integrated into all religious rituals and practices, including the early declaration of Ramadan. The method employed annually to determine Ramadan\u27s beginning is regarded as a legitimate cultural heritage with authenticity and alignment with Islamic principles. In Maluku, religious symbols and traditional practices in observing the new moon via natural indicators are frequently utilized concurrently to ascertain the start of Ramadan. This interplay fosters a symbolic dynamic that merges scientific methodologies with traditional practices, influenced by the roles of national religious bodies and local indigenous communities

    No full text
Islamic Higher Education (PTAI) is expected to be a research based university with international competitiveness without losing its characteristics. It is necessary to eliminate the scientific dichotomy by integrating science with Islamic religious studies. At IAIN Purwokerto, the concept of integration-interconnection is manifested in “Jabalul Hikmah”. The epistemological reintegration of the scientific foundations is expected to answer academic, religious, social, cultural, and technological problems in society. One of the subjects based on general science which needs to be integrated with Islamic studies is Anthropobiology. Hence, this study aims to examine how to present anthropobiology courses in an integrated interconnected with Islamic studies. This research is a library research conducted by collecting and analyzing data from books, journals, and articles related to scientific integration models and anthropobiological concepts in pure science and Islamic perspectives. In the Miles and Huberman model, the collected will be reduced to focus on the important things, then the data is presented, and finally verified. The results show that efforts to integrate Islamic science in Anthropobiology course material can be done by integrating anthropobiological concepts derived from universal truths with Islamic studies. Through the integration-interconnection of Islamic science, Anthropobiology courses can support Islamic Early Childhood Education Study Program students to have a comprehensive understanding of human characteristics to prepare early childhood education

Contestation and Coexistence: The Puritanical Da’wah of Luthfi Bashori and Its Implication for Nahdlatul Ulama

    No full text
Luthfi Bashori is a cleric of Nahdlatul Ulama with his controversial ASWAJA Garis Lurus (Straight Line) or NU Garis Lurus. However, no in-depth research has examined his da’wah and its implications for the NU. This library research study utilized documentation and observation of Bashori\u27s da’wah in digital media. This study focused on the objectives, strategies, themes, and reactions to Bashori\u27s da’wah. The theory of action motives, conflict theory, and da’wah perspectives guided data analysis. This research asserted that the purpose of Bashori\u27s da’wah is to maintain the ASWAJA (Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama’ah) of KH. Muhammad Hasyim Asy’ari, as well as fortifying Muslims from secularism, pluralism, liberalism, Shia, and Wahhabism. According to Weber’s theory, Bashori da’wah is motivated by religious values and purposive goals. His strategy of da’wah varied depending on the context. His themes of da’wah contained Islamic law, theology, morality, and political issues. The content of his da’wah is based on his understanding of the Qur\u27an and hadith. In addition to getting pro and con responses from Nahdliyin, his da’wah implied strengthening religious opposition and internal contestation in the NU. This research uncovered the puritanical religious da’wah in the NU. It revealed that the NU managed internal conflict with coexistence among groups of dissenting viewpoints due to the moderation paradigm

Griefing emotions on Facebook wall: a visual multimodal dialogue from a semiotic technology perspective

    No full text
The expression of grief has shifted from traditional face-to-face rituals to digital spaces. Social media provides features such as emojis, stickers, and GIFs, enabling users to express mourning visually and symbolically. This phenomenon illustrates how cultural and religious practices are transformed through technological mediation. The study aims to analyze how multimodal dialogue represents grief on Facebook and how meaning is constructed in digital mourning practices. The research applies a social semiotic approach with a semiotic technology method. Data were collected from grief-related posts and comments on the Facebook account @endah.sucipto. The analysis focused on two models of interaction: system–user and user–user. Each textual and visual element was examined through multimodal content analysis and interpreted using semiotic theory. The findings show that expressions of grief appear in three dominant forms: condolences, Qur’anic verses, and prayers for the deceased. Users also rely on emojis, reaction icons, stickers, and images to strengthen emotional expression. These multimodal practices integrate religious traditions and digital symbols, creating hybrid forms of mourning in online communities. Visual features such as GIFs and stickers are substitutes for nonverbal cues and add affective value to brief textual comments. This study contributes to communication and cultural studies by showing how social media functions as both a technological medium and a cultural arena. The results highlight the role of digital semiotics in rearticulating cultural symbols of grief. Future research may expand this inquiry by comparing digital mourning practices across platforms and cultural contexts
