    The regulation of erythropoietin and other genes by hypoxia: The search for universal mechanisms

    Oxygen is of fundamental importance for living organisms. In higher organisms it plays a vital role in energy provision by acting as the terminal accpetor in the electron transport chain. It also has an essential role in many critical biosynthetic reactions. Despite performing these vital functions, oxygen can exert toxic effects because of the formation of reactive oxygen species. Achieving the appropriate delivery of oxygen to tissues and cells, adjustin metabolism accordingly and minimising the toxicity of oxygen is crucial for living organisms. In order for this to occur, organisms must be able to sense oxygen and respond to changes in oxygen tension by altering the expression of particular genes. In single cellullar organisms, oxygen is obtained from the environment by simple diffusion. In larger, multicellular organisms, complex organs are necessary to supply oxygen to tissues. In mammals oxygen is absorded by the lungs into the blood. Oxygen has a relatively poor aqueous solubility. To achieve sufficient oxygen supply to the tissues, oxygen carriage in the blood is considerably enhanced by the transport of oxygen liganded to haemoglobin, packaged within red blood cells. A complex vasculature enables the delivery of this oxygenated blood to the tissues. In order for this supply to be optimally maintained, precise distribution of the vasculature to the lungs and other tissues is essential, as is the control of ventilation and red blood cell production

    Assistência de enfermagem em pacientes com celulite pós-traumática: estudo de caso

    Cellulitis is a localized infection of soft tissues that occurs due to the entry of bacteria through a disruption in the skin barrier. This clinical case presents the results of implementing nursing care in a patient with post-traumatic cellulitis. This is a qualitative case study in which Maryory Gordon's functional patterns were assessed in the patient, and a care plan was applied using the NANDA, NIC, and NOC taxonomies. Comfort, pain, and self-perception of her image were the prioritized diagnoses in the patient. This helped make interventions aimed at improving health and quality of life. It was determined that the nursing care provided helped maintain a balance in the patient's health condition, thus achieving progressive recovery.La celulitis es una infección localizada en los tejidos blandos que surge debido al ingreso de bacterias a través de una alteración en la barrera cutánea. En el presente caso clínico, se muestran los resultados de implementar cuidados de enfermería a una paciente con celulitis postraumática. Se trata de un estudio de caso con enfoque cualitativo, en el que se valoraron los patrones funcionales de Maryory Gordon en la paciente, y se aplicó un plan de cuidados elaborado mediante las taxonomías NANDA, NIC y NOC. La comodidad, el dolor y la autopercepción por su imagen fueron los diagnósticos priorizados en la paciente. Esto ayudó a realizar intervenciones que apunten al mejoramiento de la salud y la calidad de vida. Se determinó que los cuidados proporcionados por enfermería lograron mantener un equilibrio en el estado de salud de la paciente, logrando así una recuperación progresiva.A celulite é uma infecção localizada nos tecidos moles que surge devido à entrada de bactérias através de uma alteração na barreira cutânea. No presente caso clínico, são apresentados os resultados da implementação da assistência de enfermagem a uma paciente com celulite pós-traumática. Trata-se de um estudo de caso com enfoque qualitativo, no qual foram avaliados os padrões funcionais de Maryory Gordon na paciente e foi aplicado um plano da assistência elaborado por meio das taxonomias NANDA, NIC e NOC. O conforto, a dor e a autopercepção pela sua imagem foram os diagnósticos priorizados na paciente. Isso ajudou a realizar intervenções que visavam melhorar a saúde e a qualidade de vida. Determinou-se que a assistência prestada pela enfermagem conseguiu manter um equilíbrio no estado de saúde da paciente, alcançando assim uma recuperação progressiva

    Influencia de las pruebas de admisión sobre el rendimiento académico de estudiantes universitarios de primer año

    This work determines the relationship between the score obtained in two subjects that compose the admission test of a recognized Ecuadorian University, and the academic performance in subjects with direct affinity to them. The target group was composed of first year students from three different cohorts, and a cross-sectional study was carried out to determine the relationship between the results of the admission test and the performance in the first and second cycle of university life. The results show a mostly positive association between the score achieved in the subjects of reading comprehension and mathematical comprehension in the admission test and academic performance in related subjects. From this, it can be concluded that the university admission test is a predictor of academic performance during the first year. For future studies, it is advisable to include in this type of analysis other variables related to the entrance profile of firstyear university students.Este trabajo determina la relación entre el puntaje obtenido en dos temáticas que componen la prueba de admisión de una reconocida Universidad ecuatoriana, y el desempeño académico en materias con afinidad directa a las mismas. El grupo objetivo estuvo compuesto por estudiantes de primer año de tres cohortes distintas, realizándose un estudio transversal que contempló la relación entre los resultados de su prueba de admisión y el rendimiento de primer y segundo ciclo de vida universitaria. Los resultados muestran mayoritariamente, una relación positiva entre el puntaje logrado en las temáticas de comprensión lectora y comprensión matemática de la prueba de admisión, y el rendimiento académico en materias asociadas. A partir de esto, se puede concluir que la prueba de admisión universitaria, es un predictor del rendimiento académico durante su primer año. Para próximos estudios, es aconsejable incluir en este tipo de análisis, otras variables relacionadas al perfil de ingreso de estudiantes universitarios de primer año

    Formación inicial de docentes en la Educación Superior

    This is an early practice experience carried out with a sample of four students who are in their fourth semester of the bachelor’s degree in language and literature, and mathematics at the Industrial University of Santander, Colombia, in the academic activity Curricular Development. The objective is to investigate the perceptions and interests of 35 ninth grade students of basic secondary education in the area of Spanish language, and 32 eleventh grade students of secondary education, in the area of mathematics, in an educational institution in Bucaramanga, where they interact with teachers of the areas and observe the teaching dynamics. The data is obtained through observation and a questionnaire that includes open and closed questions. Some of the answers indicate the need to include in the development of classes, activities that link technological resources, creativity and greater group interaction, as well as address current issues.Se presenta una experiencia de práctica temprana realizada con una muestra de cuatro estudiantes que cursan cuarto semestre de las licenciaturas en lenguaje y literatura, y matemáticas en la Universidad Industrial de Santander, Colombia en la actividad académica Desarrollo Curricular. El objetivo, indagar por percepciones e intereses de 35 estudiantes de grado noveno de la educación básica secundaria en el área de lengua castellana, y 32 estudiantes de grado 11 de la educación media, en el área de matemáticas, en una institución educativa de Bucaramanga, allí interactúan con los docentes de las áreas y observan las dinámicas de enseñanza. Los datos se obtienen a través de la observación y de un cuestionario que incluye preguntas abiertas y cerradas. Algunas de las respuestas señalan la necesidad de incluir en el desarrollo de las clases, actividades que vinculen recursos tecnológicos, creatividad y de mayor interacción grupal, además tratar problemáticas de actualidad

    The present project, developed in collaboration between Tecnologico de Monterrey, Universidad de San Sebastián in Chile, and Universidad Católica de Colombia, introduces an advanced methodology for integrating emerging technologies in higher education. This methodology combines artificial intelligence, mixed realities, the Metaverse, and the Global Classroom program to enhance the teaching of the course “Formal Representation of Space.” The results show significant improvements in three-dimensional spatial visualization and student engagement, supported by pre-test and post-test data.El presente proyecto desarrollado en colaboración entre el Tecnológico de Monterrey, la Universidad de San Sebastián en Chile y la Universidad Católica de Colombia, introduce una metodología avanzada para la integración de tecnologías emergentes en la educación superior. Esta metodología combina inteligencia artificial, realidades mixtas, el Metaverso y el programa Global Classroom para mejorar la enseñanza del curso “Representación Formal del Espacio”.     This research focuses on boosting children’s creativity through art and technology using the STEAM method. It emphasizes the use of visual arts or painting, one of the oldest artistic mediums developed by humans. To make the arts more appealing, technological elements have been incorporated. The project aims to analyze the impact of visual arts and augmented reality through the STEAM approach on the creativity of children in Buenavista Parish. A qualitative methodology was used, including an observation sheet, templates for artistic development, and augmented reality tools such as Quiver-Vision. The observation results in this study reveal that the children in Buenavista exhibit a high level of curiosity and enthusiasm towards the use of pictorial and technological tools, demonstrating that combining visual arts with technology like augmented reality is an effective means of enhancing children’s creativity.Este trabajo de investigación se enfoca en impulsar la creatividad de los infantes a través del arte y la tecnología empleando el método STEAM; para ello, se enfatiza en el uso de las artes pictóricas o la pintura como uno de los medios artísticos más antiguos desarrollados por el ser humano, para que las artes resulten más atractivas se han incorporado elementos tecnológicos; el proyecto tiene como finalidad analizar la incidencia de las artes pictóricas y la realidad aumentada mediante el enfoque STEAM sobre la creatividad de los niños de la parroquia Buenavista. Para esto, se empleó una metodología cualitativa, una ficha de observación, plantillas para el desenvolvimiento artístico y herramientas de la realidad aumentada como lo es QuiverVision. Los resultados de la observación dentro de este estudio arrojan que los niños de Buenavista tienen un alto nivel de curiosidad y entusiasmo ante el uso de herramientas pictóricas y tecnológicas, demostrando así que las artes pictóricas combinadas con la tecnología como la realidad aumentada son un medio altamente calificado para impulsar la creatividad de los niños

    Reabilitação oral integral com fluxo digital e analógico em paciente com perda generalizada de estrutura dentária: relato de caso

    The sequence of a comprehensive oral rehabilitation is described in a patient with generalized loss of tooth structure, highlighting the importance of restoring stomatognathic system function through a multidisciplinary approach. The patient was a 57-year-old woman diagnosed with occlusal disharmony, generalized attrition due to parafunction, mild dental crowding, defective restorations, carious lesions, and partial mandibular edentulism. Treatment was performed in two phases: initially, an esthetic mini-JIG was used, and occlusion was stabilized by increasing the vertical dimension using stamped composite resins restorations. In the second phase, veneers, vonlays, and implant-supported crowns were placed in the maxilla, along with a removable partial denture in the mandible, followed by delivery of a protective occlusal splint. The combination of analog and digital techniques allowed for the restoration of both function and esthetics.Se describe la secuencia de una rehabilitación oral integral en una paciente con pérdida generalizada de estructura dental; asimismo, se destaca la importancia de restablecer las funciones del sistema estomatognático mediante un abordaje multidisciplinar. El caso corresponde a una mujer de 57 años con diagnóstico de disarmonía oclusal, atrición generalizada por parafunción, apiñamiento dental leve, restauraciones en mal estado, lesiones cariosas y edentulismo parcial inferior. El tratamiento se realizó en dos fases: inicialmente se empleó un mini-JIG estético y se estabilizó la oclusión mediante incremento de la dimensión vertical con resinas estampadas. Posteriormente, se confeccionaron carillas, vonlays y coronas sobre implantes en el maxilar superior, y una prótesis parcial removible en el maxilar inferior. El tratamiento concluyó con la instalación de una férula oclusal de protección. La combinación de técnicas analógicas y digitales permitió restaurar la función y estética de la paciente.  Descreve-se a sequência de uma reabilitação oral integral em uma paciente com perda generalizada de estrutura dentária, destacando a importância do restabelecimento das funções do sistema estomatognático por meio de uma abordagem multidisciplinar. O caso refere-se a uma mulher de 57 anos de idade com diagnóstico de desarmonia oclusal, atrição generalizada por parafunção, apinhamento dentário leve, restaurações em condições inadequadas, lesões cariosas e edentulismo parcial inferior. O tratamento foi realizado em duas fases: inicialmente, utilizou-se um mini-JIG estético e procedeu-se à estabilização oclusal por meio do aumento da dimensão vertical de conveniência com resinas estampadas; posteriormente, foram realizadas facetas, vonlays e coroas sobre implantes no maxilar superior, bem como uma prótese parcial removível no maxilar inferior, finalizando-se com a instalação de uma placa oclusal de proteção. A combinação de técnicas analógicas e digitais possibilitou a restauração da função e da estética da paciente

    Perfis de graduação dos programas de Odontologia do Peru

    Objective: To identify the competencies declared in the graduate profiles of Dentistry and Stomatology programs in Peru. Materials and methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional, observational study was conducted. The study population comprised Dentistry and Stomatology programs listed in TUNI, the official platform of the National Superintendency of Higher University Education (SUNEDU). Programs with no publicly available graduate profile information on their institutional websites were excluded. Competencies were extracted, categorized, and systematized based on reference frameworks from the Peruvian Dental Association and the Ministry of Health. Results: The most frequent competencies in the graduate profiles were clinical and research-related (85.19%; n = 23), followed by ethical-moral competencies (70.37%; n = 19). Empathy was the least frequently reported competency (11.11%; n = 3). Conclusion: Across public and private universities, clinical and research competencies were the most prevalent in the graduate profiles of Dentistry and Stomatology programs in Peru.Objetivo: Identificar las competencias declaradas en los perfiles de egreso de los programas de Odontología y Estomatología en el Perú. Materiales y métodos: Estudio descriptivo, transversal y observacional. La población estuvo conformada por los programas de odontología y estomatología registrados en TUNI, plataforma oficial de la SUNEDU. Se excluyeron los programas que no contaban con información del perfil de egreso en el portal web institucional. Se analizaron y sistematizaron las competencias con base en el Colegio Odontológico del Perú y el Ministerio de Salud. Resultados: Las competencias más frecuentes en los perfiles de egreso fueron las de índole clínica (85,19 %; n = 23) e investigativa (85,19 %; n = 23), seguidas por las ético-morales (70,37 %; n = 19), mientras que la menos mencionada fue la empatía (11,11 %; n = 3). Conclusión: En las universidades públicas y privadas, las competencias clínicas e investigativas fueron las más prevalentes en los perfiles de egreso de los programas de formación profesional en Odontología y Estomatología.  Objetivo: Identificar as competências estabelecidas nos perfis de graduação dos programas de Odontologia e Estomatologia no Peru. Materiais e métodos: Estudo descritivo, transversal e observacional. A população foi composta pelos programas de odontologia e estomatologia registrados na TUNI, a plataforma oficial da Sunedu. Foram excluídos os programas que não possuíam informações sobre o perfil de graduação no portal institucional. As competências foram analisadas e sistematizadas com base no Colégio de Odontologistas do Peru e no Ministério da Saúde. Resultados: As competências mais frequentes nos perfis de graduação foram as de natureza clínica e pesquisa (85,19%; n = 23), seguidas pelas ético-morais (70,37%; n = 19). A competência menos mencionada foi a empatia (11,11%; n = 3). Conclusão: Nas universidades públicas e privadas, as competências clínicas e de pesquisa foram as mais comuns nos perfis de graduação dos programas de formação profissional em odontologia e estomatologia
