Antanas Kazakauskas, the Maker of Collages and Creative Book ‘Clothing’ in the 1960s-70s: Acta Academiae Artium Vilnensis
Straipsnyje pristatomas iki šiol beveik netyrinėtas Antano Kazakausko XX a. 7–8 deš. apipavidalintų knygų dizainas. The paper introduces the book design by Antanas Kazakauskas (1937–2019), specifically his work from the widely unresearched period of the 1960s–70s. The paper aims to contextually analyse the compositional principles of the book ‘clothes’ (dust covers, covers) and other constructional elements designed by Kazakauskas and determine the author’s stylistic codes. The research has been largely inspired by my personal acquaintance with the author, the interviews I carried out during 2013–2018, and the access to his personal archive with his original graphic design sketches and home library with the magazines he subscribed during the soviet times. It was his book covers, dust cover cut outs and unfolded lapels which I found tidily laid out in the few drawers of his personal archive that suggested the metaphor of ‘book clothes’
Between Critical and Industrial Design. A Designer’s View: Acta Academiae Artium Vilnensis
The text discusses industrial and critical design, the points of their intersection and separation. These two fields of design basically cover the same context of building things, but they play different roles. Supplementing one another, in contemporary design they become two sides representing different value orientations. Due to different design methods applied, they often become closed in their specific practices. The creative methods of critical design often correlate with the contemporary art field. Without taking it into account, it is difficult to interpret new methods in the framework of traditional design. In the meantime, industrial design practice most often meets the needs of the commercial market or production capacities, but not necessarily those of design itself or the consumer. This article analyses how these practices were formed historically, how they are different, and how they are interrelated.
Does good design merely satisfy the physical needs of an individual for a lesser price, is it based on a designer’s aim to rethink the surrounding objects over and over again? In my opinion, generally speaking, both indus- trial and critical design practices critically, though differently, respond to the environment and its factors, and the designer’s role is not limited to the de- sign of objects, but is also based on the observation of the environment which produces the need for a new object. In order to justify the appearance of new objects and to compete in the highly-developed commercial context, an object must contain an element of transformation/change, which becomes both an added value in the economic context, and a circumstance creating a wider potential of that object
Sleep, Myths and Allegories in the Painting "Amor" from the Collection of the Lithuanian National Museum of Art
Straipsnio objektas – tai Lietuvos nacionalinio dailės muziejaus kolekcijoje saugomas nuotaikingas kamerinis miegančio meilės dievaičio atvaizdas, sukurtas prancūzų dailininko François Lemoyne’o (1688–1737) pagal 1729 m. nutapytą drobę. Specifinei Lemoyne’o kūrinio kartotės ikonografijai pažinti pasitelkiama miegančio Amūro įvaizdžio ištakų, simbolikos ir meninių interpretacijų istorija, kurioje svarbų pėdsaką paliko ir garsiausi dailės pasaulio vardai. Subtiliai antikinės mitologijos ir moralinės alegorijos tradicijas jungianti įmigusio Amūro ikonografija atskleidžia, kad slėpininga miego, sapnų erdvė dailės kūrinyje gali tapti vaizdinga ir paveikia ne ką mažiau paslaptingo ir sudėtingo žmogaus jausmų pasaulio metafora.Enveloped in mystery and provoking imagination, the world of sleep and dreams has been a rich source of inspiration for artists since the earliest times. The cornerstones of the secular iconography of sleep in Western art were laid by classical Greek and Roman culture. In the course of centuries, quite a few adventures of gods, goddesses and heroes described in classical myths and other works of literature of that time inspired many artworks interpreting the mythological heritage, which were in some way related to rest or dreams. There is an example of such work in Lithuania as well – the collection of the Lithuanian National Museum of Art (hereinafter referred to as LNMA) boasts an image of the sleeping mythical god of love Amor, created by an unknown artist after the 1729 painting by the French painter François Lemoyne (1688–1737) possibly in the 18th century or the first half of the 19th century, and the search for the history and meaning of the iconography of this work is the main subject of this article
Enlightenment and Book Culture: Illustrations in the Secular Books Published in Vilnius during the Second Half of the 18th Century: Acta Academiae Artium Vilnensis
Straipsnyje keliais aspektais nagrinėjamos XVIII a. antros pusės Vilniaus pasaulietinių leidinių iliustracijos. Tyrimo objekto specifiškumą apsprendžia Vilniaus spaudos institucinis pobūdis. Keliamas tikslas užfiksuoti pasaulietinius leidinius su iliustracijomis, aprašyti iliustracijų siužetą, nustatyti autorių, vaizdo šaltinius ir atskleisti atsiradimo kontekstą. Tyrime remiamasi prielaida, kad XVIII a. knygos iliustracijos menui darė įtaką Apšvietos vertybės.The research focuses on the six illustrations from different secular books. Three illustrations come from the Piarist printing house: “The Allegory of Diplomacy” (engraved by Johanna Dorothea Philipp-Sysang) from the book published in 1758; “The Allegory of the Piarist School of Piety” (by the artist F. Moser), book published in 1774; and “The Allegory of Electricity” (engraver unknown) in the publication from 1786. Two illustrations appear in the books printed in 1781 by an academic printing house: “The Portrait of Lucius Anneus Seneca” (engraver unknown) and “The Exterior View of Vilnius University” (engraver unknown). One unauthored illustration-vignette in the book printed in 1791 by the Basilian printing house depicts a labouring child. The research sought to identif
Erdvėlaikio samprata knygos mene: Acta Academiae Artium Vilnensis
The perception of a book as an architectonical construction is a well-known fact. We could use the stage as a metaphor for the book, or, in other concepts the book becomes the equivalent of an exhibition space or even replaces it. In all these metaphoric circumlocutions the book not only reproduces content, but itself functions as an exhibition place, a stage, or another conception of space. Curiously enough, the consideration of the material aspects of books are taken into account at a time when digitalisation seems to dissolve the material body of books and, while theory makes it clear that texts and books are not equivalent. Therefore the question of what characterises a book is raised again. This question must take into account the variety of different approaches to books throughout the centuries. The perception of the book and, moreover, its relation with the user or reader becomes visible mainly through material aspects. The awareness of the spatial dimension of a book goes back to at least the Medieval period or even earlier.
Eugenijus Karpavičius: Less Is More: Acta Academiae Artium Vilnensis
Straipsnyje aptariama vieno žymiausių XX–XXI a. sandūros Lietuvos knygos dailininkų Eugenijaus Karpavičiaus (1953–2010) kūryba. Eugenijus Karpavičius (1953–2010) one of the most prominent Lithuanian book designers of the turn of the 20th century. He designed over 300 books from all over spectrum of genres: art and photography albums, catalogues, as well as books of poetry, essays, academic papers and textbooks. His books have won many awards in both Lithuanian and international book art competitions such as the Best Book Design from All Over the World, and were widely exhibited innternationally in book fairs and pavilions of the Lithuanian Publishers Association and the individual publishers.
Throughout his 30 years of practice, Karpavičius remained faithful to the creative principle ‘less is more’. In a way, this principle reflects the very essence of a book – the oldest means of communication, a cultural object and a avaluable commodity. A book is about information and its transmission, therefore its main functions: informational, educational and aesthetic. Karpavičius understood those functions perfectly well and his works stand out as their masterful embodiments – they all feature a distinct architectonic, structural logic, compositional clarity, harmony of text and image, and highly literate application of printing techniques.
Karpavičius approach was minimalist, and he consciously avoided any unnecesary decorum. His artistic style is based around the 20th century’s ‘classical’ principles of book design: clarity of both structure and overall composition, harmonious and logical layout of text and images, and expertise in printing technologies. However, his books are not devoid of spirit- uality – the meticulousness of his designs gives away an overly emotional relation towards both text and image. Today laconic and functional design – an alternative to the ‘novelty’ or even kitsch – is undeservedly underrated
Nerutininė fotografijos knygos estetika: fenomenologinis NoRoutine knygų skaitymas: Acta Academiae Artium Vilnensis
The independent Lithuanian publisher NoRoutine Books, founded by Vilma Samulionytė and Gytis Skudžinskas in 2014, has produced 15 photobooks. They treat the photobook as a medium which has its own material qualities, its own language and ways of producing meaning. The strictly kept print run of 99 copies not only turns the books into rare collectible items, but also functions as a statement about the books as objects to be appreciated and read slowly, with pleasure, while taking time to decipher the message conveyed by the structure of the book. In order to demonstrate how such a reading works, the article discusses five books.Menininkai Vilma Samulionytė ir Gytis Skudžinskas 2014 m. įkūrė nepriklausomą leidyklą „NoRoutine Books“ (dar vadinamą „Nerutina“). Iki 2021 m. pradžios išleista 15 fotoknygų ir viena knyga be vaizdų.
The enormous popularity of decorated industrial wall and floor tiles in Europe in the years 1840–1940 is strongly linked to the standardization, technical quality, and aesthetic variety of the products that were well marketed through often lavishly colored trade catalogues.
More than the study of existing tile schemes in interiors, a systematic study of these trade catalogues leads to a better understanding of the general use of tile in the nineteenth- and twentieth-century interior. They inform us about factories and offer invaluable information on the technical and aesthetic evolution of tiles. They help us to date the designs and acquire a better knowledge of changes in taste in applying them. They are also a valuable source for documenting differences and similarities between factories and countries in matters of tile design and reveal opportunities to better understand the global export success or stylistic influence of many European factories in other countries on the continent as well as overseas.
In this paper a general and theoretical approach is elucidated by referring to concrete cases based on a research collection of more than 600 tile catalogues from all over the world. Be to, galime rasti įvairios informacijos apie plytelių techninę ir estetinę evoliuciją, jie gali mums padėti tiksliau datuoti plytelių modelius.
The article considers the history of the origin and development of the Regional Factory of Tile Stoves in Lviv, using the development of other ceramic institutions as a background. The owners of the factory have been identified as Berl Neuwohner, Neuwohner’s partner, Filip Waldmann (Waldman), and the Kubin, Brich and Korzeniowski company, which merged with the factory. The contribution of the current director of the factory, Oksana Chepurna, to the continuity of the factory work and the variety and quality of the production has been analyzed. The range of factory products, the stylistics and colors of the tiles, and their raw materials as well as use of factory products on the facades and interiors of Lviv buildings are described.
