Effect of Socioeconomic Status on Students' Educational Achievement: the Example of PISA Study, Croatia 2006
One's socio-economic status affects almost every aspect of his/hers life, including education. The main objective of this paper is to determine the relationship between familial socioeconomic status and students’ educational achievement. The paper is based on the OECD – PISA international study carried out in Croatia in 2006 on the sample of 5 209 15-year-old students involved in secondary education. Students’ results in scientific literacy, as well as variables and indices constructed by OECD, were used in analyses. The distributions of selected variables linked to socio-economic status definition, such as parental education, monthly household income, educational expenses and home educational resources are presented, as well as their regional differences. Multiple regression analysis proved the relationship between socioeconomic factors and students’ science test accomplishment. Regression model which includes three indices (Highest International Socioeconomic Index of Occupational Status, Index of home educational resources and Index of cultural possessions) and four variables (average monthly household income, average monthly educational expenses, household book number and highest educational status of parents) explain 23 per cent of the total variance of students’ achievement in scientific literacy. The second regression model with the region of residence additionally contributes to variance explanation by 1 per cent, indicating significant relation between living in specific Croatian region and science achievement. The main conclusion of this paper is that socio-economic status (along with the region of residence) represents a significant predictor of the educational achievement, and that it is relevant in analyses and interpretations of PISA results, even though Croatia could use an adaptation of PISA indices in order to trustworthy represent the data. It is advisable to continuously analyse the test results and, besides some general indicators of educational success, such as educational system, teacher qualifications and school infrastructure, also to consider the effect of students’ socioeconomic status
Demographic development of Gorski Kotar has largely been a reflection of unfavourable natural-geographic and socio-economic circumstances, which had impelled emigration of the population from this region already by the end of the 19th century, and this process has not stopped till nowadays. The decrease in the total number of inhabitants has been strongly influenced by decades of emigration. Since the 1960s, negative natural movements have significantly contributed to total depopulation. Based on the analysis of negative demographic processes in the Gorski Kotar region, several kinds of demographic projections have been made for the period until 2021. According to these projections, further negative demographic tendencies and additional diminution of the Gorski Kotar population, as well as a negative birth-rate and the erosion of all demographic and economic structures are expected. Population ageing will be a fundamental determinant of future demographic development of the observed area, because every third inhabitant will be more than 60 years old and this points to potential problems in the social and economic development of the region.
“ONE MAN’S SEA IS ANOTHER MAN’S WATER”: THE MOTIF OF WATER IN THE ORAL POETRY OF HVAR
Topos vode u pjesništvu istočnih Hvarana znatno je češći, no u usmenim pjesmama njihovih zapadnih suotočana. Unatoč prožimanjima, preuzimanjima i lokaliziranju pojedinih sadržaja, more i doživljaj mora ipak su najsnažniji dokaz sredozemništva stanovnika koji žive uz njega i od njega. The island of Hvar is a meeting point of the Dinaridic and the Mediterranean area, a blend of the inland and the coastal Dalmatia on a small scale, where a symbiosis of two oral literary traditions can be found in an insular area of only 300 square kilometers. The settlements on the eastern part of the island are dominated by epic, heroic, decasyllabic poems, while predominantly lyric non-decasyllabic forms are found on the western part of the island. In the analysis of the manuscript collections of oral poetry collected on the island in the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the inscription of the geographic space on the thematic level has been explored, in particular the way in which the topoi of the sea and water are represented. The notions of the sea, the sea as a topos, a metaphor or a well-established formula, are much more frequent in the western than in the eastern part of the island. The topos of water is far more frequent in the poetry of the eastern part of the island of Hvar than in the poetry of their western co-islanders. Despite mutual influences, borrowing and localization of certain contents, the sea and the experience of the sea are the strongest evidence for the Mediterranean belonging of the population who lives near the sea and of the sea
Private projects of land improvment, drainage and amelioration in Dalmatia and Istria from early modern period to the twentieth century
This paper compares two private projects of amelioration and swamp land drainage, and how they contributed to human environmental issues throughout three centuries. The first case is Vransko jezero lake drainage on a Borelli feudal manor in Ravni kotari in the 18th century; the second is related to land drainage in swamp Brijuni estate of the Austrian industrialist Paula Kupelwieser in the beginning of the 20th century. Similar motives urged both entrepreneurs to undertake comprehensive and very expensive amelioration works, with specific ecology, economy and political contexts shaping the final results of these two efforts. This refers to numerous obstacles, relating both to ecology and economy, these two entrepreneurs were struck with; to professional know-how and technical capabilities they had; finally, to long-term consequences these land improvement efforts hand on the environment. An echo of physiocratsí ideals, that wealth is derived from land development (the first case), and ongoing agrarian, technical, industrial and energy revolutions in Europe (the second case), only sped up the anthropization and conversion of landscapes and natural environments by man. Regardless of the 150 year-time distance, both attempts failed due to unfavorable political circumstances, lack of local acceptance and failing support by local population and central government. However, the direction human activities had on the nature could not be changed anymore, as landscapes were primarily formed on a little more moderate use of relevant natural prerequisites and on plans and visions by former land owners
Socio-demographic characteristics and processes in Croatian coastal cities
Obalni gradovi kao polovi i nositelji društveno-gospodarskog razvoja u svojim regijama postaju žarišta koncentracije stanovništva, a otoci i zaleđe prostori populacijskoga pražnjenja i starenja. Smanjenje rodnosti, starenje stanovništva te promjene životnih vrijednosti i novi životni stil dovode do transformacije obitelji i promjena u veličini kućanstava i odnosa među članovima. Opća je tendencija postupno smanjivanje broja višečlanih kućanstava i neprestani rast udjela dvočlanih i samačkih kućanstava.Polarisation processes, which began in Croatia in the 1950's, resulted in disparate socio-economic development, in an uneven spatial distribution of the population, and in a concentration of people, jobs and housing in urban settlements. Coastal cities, as hubs and agents of socio-economic development, in their regions became focal points for the concentration of the population, while islands and hinterland areas suffered depopulation and demographic ageing. Intense in-migration had a positive influence on the demographic development of coastal cities. They became hotbeds of bioreproduction and up to the most recent intercensus period (1991–2001) displayed dynamic population growth. However political and economic changes in this recent period, together with the effects of the war, deepened and accelerated increasingly unfavourable demographic processes, which were reflected in an overall reduction of the population of coastal Adriatic cities, as well as in a deterioration of its structure. Decreasing fertility, demographic ageing and changes in life values brought about a transformation of the family, and hence changes in the size of households and in the relations among family members. The general trend today involves a gradual reduction in the number of household members, and a continuous increase in the number of two and one-member households
Suzbijanje korupcije u Hrvatskoj: od stručnih percepcija do javnopolitički usmjerenoga djelovanja i natrag
In this paper a comparative analysis of various perceptions of corruption in Croatia is presented. The investigation is based on the research results obtained within the FP6 project “Crime as Culture”, started in 2006, which focused on the perception of corruption in seven European countries. The grounded theory method was used to organize and interpret data collected in interviews with experts from six target groups. The aim of this paper is to provide some policy-oriented insights based on a synthesis of the project findings. The paper is divided into four sections focusing on the major dimensions of combat against corruption: (1) research on corruption, (2) sanctioning corruption, (3) corruption prevention, and (4) increasing anti-corruption awareness. As our analyses suggest, the social embeddedness of corruption in Croatia is well reflected in the dominant expert perceptions of corruption. The observed heterogeneity and fragmentariness of the existing (and often competing) perceptions of corruption found in this study are potential obstacles to a systematic, well-coordinated, and efficacious anti-corruption strategy.U radu se predstavlja komparativna analiza različitih percepcija korupcije u Hrvatskoj.
Growig old in a city – The case of Zagreb
The process of urban concentration of the population of Croatia and its ageing can be compared with similar trends worldwide. In the Croatian urban system, Zagreb stands out as the biggest and most important demographic, political, economic and cultural centre. After decades-long continuous growth, both Zagreb and the whole of Croatia registered a decrease in total population for the first time over the last 1991-2001 inter-census period, but at the same time a considerable increase in old population as well. All analytical indicator values of the population structure according to age show intense population ageing to be a characteristic of Zagreb at the beginning of the 21st century. The aim of this paper is to examine, on the example of Zagreb, the causes and consequences of population ageing in urban areas from a demo-geographic and sociological aspect. The age structure analysis of the Zagreb populationis based on the last three censuses held in 1981, 1991 and 2001, while spatial distribution of elderly inhabitants in the city relies on the 2001 census. Some peculiarities of the elderly urban population way of life and forms of formal care in the city of Zagreb are considered in the closing part of the paper. The authors emphasise a considerably higher level of formal care organisation for the elderly inhabitants of Zagreb in relation to other Croatian cities, but also some danger to the extent of care for all sensitive social groups under economic crisis conditions
Population Development of Rijeka Urban Region Under the Influence of Migration
In the last inter-census period, between 1991 and 2001, Rijeka recorded population decrease for the first time after World War II as the result of negative natural movement and negative net migration. At the same time the number of inhabitants in the suburban region increased owing exactly to in-migration. Besides migration characteristics analysis of the population of the city and its suburban region based on the data of previous censuses, especially on that in 2001, basic results of the empirical research conducted in 2006 by the
way of questionnaire method on the sample of 411 respondents in four settlements in the Rijeka suburban region are presented in the paper. The analysis of respondents’ replies to four questions regarding reasons for out-migration from their previous place of residence and settling in the Rijeka suburban region settlements points to solving housing problem as the main push factor of out-migration and main pull factor of in-migration to suburbs
Ethnic and religious groups in Eastern Slavonia and Western Srijem in the 18th and early 19th century
The paper presents the ethno-religious structure of the population of Eastern Slavonia and Western Srijem in the 18th and early 19th century. Based on archive sources, mainly of Hapsburg provenance, as well as descriptions given by diverse travellers and writers in regard to the history and statistics of these regions, different terms and criteria for marking ethnic affiliations in these regions in the investigated period are analysed. Besides the analysis of the names of different ethnic groups, the article focuses on the settlement and relative presence of different ethnic and religious groups (Croats, Serbs, Germans, Hungarians, Cincari, Ruthenians, Slovaks, Roma and Jews), on their social and legal status in the territory of Civil Slavonia and the Slavonian Military Frontier, and on their role in the social and economic life of Vinkovci and Vukovar. The author claims that, along with the indigenous population, the new ethnic and religious groups that arrived to this area in the 18th and 19th century, contributed greatly to the demographic and economic revival of this part of Slavonia, as well as to creating an ethnic and cultural diversity which is even today the characteristic of this region
The paper discusses the influence of ideological and scholarly-ethnographic classification schemes, as well as those pertaining to population censuses, on the formation of ethnic identities and ethnic structure in Civil Croatia and Slavonia from 1785 to 1860. Proceeding from the theory of social systems and institutions, the author examines the power of classification schemes and their influence on the construction of ethnic identities. It has been shown that changes in social orders also lead to changes in the principles of constructing classification schemes. Thus, in the modern social order, the combination of commonsensical, ideological, scholarly and official statistic classification schemes led to the creation of a specific ethno-nationalist discourse, which strongly influenced the formation of ethnic identities, overcoming traditional ethnic particularities and formation of modern ethnic communities on the territories of Civil Croatia and Slavonia in the early modern period.
