    No full text

Does Financial and social fragmentation matter for European gravity models?

    No full text
This paper studies the main determinants of bilateral financial flows in the euro area to achieve sustainable and fair financing opportunities. We revisit the modern theory of the optimal currency area considering the impact of heterogeneity in inequality measures, within and across countries, on crossborder financial flows. To do so, we introduce financial and social fragmentation in gravity models of European capital flows. We use data from 19 Eurozone countries from 2000 to 2021 and show how fragmentation impacts capital flows, namely foreign direct investment, cross-border loans as well as portfolios, equity and bond flows. Since capital is, in principle, free to flow in the Eurozone, our analysis directly identifies the roles of potential sources of fragmentation: social inequalities, lack of market openness, and domestic regulations such as macroprudential controls. Overall, our results show that financial integration in Europe entails more capital flows of any type while social fragmentation across European countries is detrimental to capital flows, no matter which type. This is strong evidence of the importance of financial and social fragmentation in the Eurozone on the distribution of capital

Avoiding Transparency through Offshore Real Estate: Evidence from the United Kingdom

    No full text
The 2014 Automatic Exchange of Information (AEoI) represents the most comprehensive global effort to combat tax evasion by enabling cross-border information exchange on financial assets. We examine how this policy shifted offshore investment behavior. While the AEoI mandates reporting of financial assets, it excludes real estate holdings. Using administrative data on UK real estate purchases by foreign companies, we show that offshore users substituted financial assets for real estate in response to the new transparency regime. Our findings suggest that real estate assets now account for a growing share of offshore portfolios, partly due to their exclusion from the AEoI

Edisi Diplomatis Falak Budha: Sebuah Naskah Sunda Kuno Koleksi Royal Asiatic Society di London (Raffles Java 1)

    No full text
International audienceThis book reveals one of the thus far neglected intellectual heirlooms of the Old Sundanese tradition, namely the Falak Budha text preserved in the Royal Asiatic Society collection in London (RAS Raffles Java 01). This 317-page manuscript, donated by Lady Raffles in 1830, is a unique compilation of various languages and scripts from the Indonesian archipelago. Our focus is on the section of the text written in Old Sundanese mixed with Old Javanese, using a West Javanese style of Kawi script, and originating from Talaga (Majalengka, Cirebon). Although this manuscript was briefly mentioned by Thomas Stamford Raffles himself in the early 19th century—particularly the section discussing the twelve constellations, the positions of the dragons, and the good and bad qualities of the moon—its contents have never been studied in detail. Given its high cultural and historical value, as well as the limited attention it has received in research over the centuries, this book presents a complete transliteration of the Falak Budha text into Latin script. This is a crucial step to help preserve the Old Sundanese writing tradition and make this important text more accessible to a wider audience. The presentation of the Falak Budha not only expands the archipelago's philological database, but also opens the door to interdisciplinary studies, such as intellectual history, cultural history, and history of traditional sciences, with the hope of connecting the knowledge contained in this manuscript with similar traditions elsewhere in Java and in Bali.

In Search of Working Time? Hours Constraints, Firms and Mobility

    No full text
Can workers reach their ideal working hours over time? This paper provides novel empirical evidence on hours constraints-barriers for workers to work their desired hours at a given wage rate-by linking self-reported hour preferences from large-scale survey data with administrative employer-employee data between 2003 and 2023. Twenty percent of French salaried workers report wanting to increase their hours at their given wage. Leveraging the panel dimension of my data, I show that constrained workers switch employers more frequently and experience increases in hours and earnings through mobility. However, most constrained workers remain unable to adjust their hours to their desired level within 3 years after their report. Next, I develop a revealed preference method to quantify welfare effects associated with constraints and find that workers would on average accept a 10.2% reduction in hourly wages to work in a job offering their desired number of hours. These findings highlight the important role of hours worked as a job amenity in shaping labor market sorting
